  • not even close to the best dupree's solo of '73. that guy who said the last bit of the solo sounded like "the ocean is the ultimate solution" is right on in my opinion. The 73-74 bands are my favorite's. Thanks a lot for posting, keep 'em coming if you can.

  • Is that the Zappa clan Tartan plaid on that coat ??

  • Anyone who dares to say that this isn't musical geniality is talking rubbish... Respect! Remindes me of Santana...

  • @wyowin Musical geniality??? Yes, this music is very friendly indeed!

  • IMHO this represents Zappa's finest hour, his humor,G Duke, the Fowlers, Ruth etc. 73-74 is the best

  • The last mintue or two of the guitar solo goes into some territory that reminds me of something completely different...maybe The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution...or Stucco Homes? Anyone else catch this?

  • Ah! Il Maestro!

  • When Zappa wanted to play clean and sweet he could but a lot of the time he chose deliberatley awkward sounding runs because he wanted liked to sound like an ugly mother.

  • magical music ! zaaaapppppppaaaaaaaaa :)

  • I know why his solo is kind of sloppy,it was fucking cold out there and i know how it is cos ive played in a situation where it was cold and my fretting hand was unsentetive,my fingers were throbbing.Even George Duke s playing was not at his best. And in a improv situation you take chances, its gonna be good or bad this time it was not very good (by Frank s standards)but on other versions he was hotter than skunk

  • basically what you mean is that you wish you had zappa's soloing under control. He's playin what he wants to hear, not for you to be able to store it in a tiny little eddie van halen box.

  • No, I understand what he means. Frank had genius ideas on guitar, but not much tone control, it's just not clean at all, probably because he never took lessons. If you can hear, he chokes a lot of notes and fails at some fast figures and tries to get back in. It's like dirt sprinkled on a perfectly painted canvas, it has a charm of its own. Nobody here wants him to sound like van halen i think. As much as we all love the music, we should stay with the facts

  • i take it buddy guy is some sort of non-entity in that case... hmm.. yea struggle isn't always a bad thing.. golly, it can even be fun, without searching to resolve it, music is just a cheap way to numb out.. ultimately hollow.. and what the fuck is a 'perfectly painted canvas'.. sigh

you may as well be in a damn coma masturbating to bach's greatest hits on never-ending repeat.. fucking hell..

  • Beautifully put. I'm buying you a pizza.

  • I think your criticisms are valid; Frank's "flaws" are actually his strengths.

  • i think what you're pointing out might have something to do with the temperature at this outdoor concert. at one point he says "it's colder than shit up here folks" in the show. that makes a huge difference in ability to play, run around the neck, etc.

  • I know what you means, and I'd have liked him to be turn a bit more toward jazz (bebop I mean)instead of all his "Lyrics" work (even though they're funny), or his hard rock's works with steve vai he would have done better studying jazz music, improvisation on scales, licks etc...

  • i'm with dogebreath on this one. it is zappa's 'technical idiosyncrasies' that make his playing so interesting.

  • @DreamedOfHugeSpiders

    better guitarist???

    you are clearly high.

  • @DreamedOfHugeSpiders zappa is the best guitarist... he had a quite good tecnique and a big big big fantasy... I can see the sweet part of his soul when he plays guitar... very fews guitarists manage in putting their soul on the guitar, but zappa DID.... the long solos are provocations to people "I guess you are not able to follow me"... but I discovered that every time I have been pacient with him, he has always rewarded me

  • splendid version

  • This is awesome, but for the BEST version of this song, check out You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore II !

    Love it!

  • Thanks Frank. One of a kind.

  • i think music can really again be creative and free like before , but you need to diattach the music from the actual economicsystem, i know it sounds old, but everywhere i go it ends up being the economic interests over evrything ..... sorry

  • THANK U

  • Do rock bands even jam like this anymore? Seems the shows are so produced now that there's hardly any real free form improv. That's a shame! I used to play myself and you HAD to jam and show what you could do, straight out of the blue sky.

  • Fantastic. No equal.

  • Get down Frank!

  • RIP Zappa! You were and are the greatest!

  • the greatest

  • Thank you thank you and thank you...god bless your heart and will provide you with anything you wish...I am watching all your clips and every time I see something I like I pray for you...lol
