the keyboard that i was using is a midi controller, it has no sounds installed. the sounds are coming from reason software. its best to use this type of keyboard when starting out, then when u need to move up get something like a yamaha motif, this has loads of sounds installed and you can make beats directly on the keyboard. one to look out for is the open labs Niko

It depends what keyboard you have. More expensive keyboards have programs built in which enables you to record and compose a song but if you have a cheaper piano then you will need software. If you have and mpc you wont need software. If you dont have any of these you will need software.
