  • i heard of Aikido styles with competitions like that

  • isnt knowing judo much much better in these competitions?

  • they show very bad judo

  • This is a wierd form of judo

  • It's amazing... but there aren't Aikido Championships ^^ So it isn' Aikido :L

  • all this looks bad. where r all those throws & graceful movements u see in aikido. this doesnt even look like ma or any kind of systematic approach towards an encounter . its sloppy & no tech just a lot of pushing & shoving

  • Pfff, this is stupid, this doesn`t even looks like aikido, and if it is you clearly see it doesn`t work in a real fight, rofl. All those nice moves you learn and this is what`s left of it :)

  • I like traditional aikido, but this randori seems amazing.

I just wish that i could learn some of this art :(

  • ...so gay

  • That gedan ate at 2:35 was really awsum... he just slips hiself right in the pocket and BOOM.. referance stuff

  • this is not aikido. Morihei Ueshiba would be sad to see this...

  • @abcfleury Damn right its not aikido

  • That Gedanate at :50 was just EMBARRASSING.. and the poor guy knew he just fed himself into it... live and larn i guess

  • херня какая то...

  • this is for real ! not some demonstration shits ... :)

  • If anyone could tell me where to find an Aikido tournement in the midwest plz message me. Illinois, Indiana preferably

  • Looks more like a set up demonstration than competition to me, and what's up with the scroll?

  • not as impressive when the attack isnt co-operating huh .

  • that's right. The flashy flips are caused by the attackers trying to fall instead of getting hurt. That is fake flashiness. So being flashy is not what Aikido is about. But still, Aikido is effective. You're only saying it isn't flashy.

  • Only effective if you actually train it the way the Tomiki branch in the video does, i.e. against people trying to resist in free-fighting format.

  • More impressive to my eyes.

  • Also it's more effective against people that don't know you use it..In those clips all were expecting Aikido throws and locks. When used in the field it works much better.

  • there is no competition in aikido

  • Well this is Tomiki aikido isn't it?

  • Wrong. There are competition in Tomiki Aikido.

  • doesnt see that its tomiki aikido..

  • there is in tamiki and shotokan Akido, it's grappling with a rubber knife

  • Isn't this JUDO/JuJutsu ? Wow....I mean..aikido? Doesn't look like it, even Tomiki aikido...

  • These people are training to die. They would be killed in real time. I do Daito (the battlefeild art aikido comes from) and this is horrible. It would be ok as a drill, as long as you also drilled other angles of attack, but outside of that it is silly. might as well just compete in judo.

  • i believe this is aikido but Kenji tomiki style of aikido

  • This don't look like aikido to me but what i know im in aikikai but ok,we don't have competitions :O

  • Imagine if this was allowed in the UFC!!

  • you can say anything about this video

    but,don´t say this "THING" aikido

    this is not aikido

  • sin sentido

  • I have had the pleasure of training with some of the guys, and girls, in this video and their techniques are great, very quick, very effective, and at times very out of the blue. A lot of Great people are on the squad, I eaven had the pleasure of using two of them for my 1st Kyu grading.

  • looks like usual judo techniques. There are'nt any moves from all those demonstrations with slow motion and running attackers. So, where are deadly and dangerous aiki techniques? How "strange" :-)

  • its harsh ..but that a Gedan ate .. a a TON OF BRICKS ONE at that...kinda brings a tear dont it...Just like the ones mama use ta do...well, not mama, but ive gotten one like that from Nariyama sensei..and belive me, it brings a tear...you slam so hard it brings a tear to you AND your mommy...nuff said..

  • 2:33-2:36 greatest aikido move !

  • Now ive posted alot of crap about Aikido and how it should be better tested by its own practitioners, so im very happy to see these kinds of clips on youtube.. I think these kinds of competitions are a really great way for Aikido to start seriously breaking down their art to be more effective. Even im surprised that some of these moves worked, so i hope that other Aikido guys watch this and try adding the same to thier practice.

  • I agree 100%

  • Aikido is as effective and efficient as it gets, in any of its form. It is a different matter that you've seen crap aikidokas and you've not understood its philosophy. Before you can give a serious commen about any martial art you must have practiced it for a very long time.

  • I have to say that I don't agree with this entirely. The attacks here are meant to be from a knife attack - I wouldn't be grappling with someone if they had a knife. Watch the film again and see how many times you could have been stabbed. There are some good moves though and I like the idea of pressure testing Aikido - it shows here that it quickly becomes a grappling match - then you enter the realms of Judo but hey - it's as good as any other 'art' out there.

  • The actualy competative part where they are grappling to a take down sure looks like JUDO to me.

  • It does and it is, this style of aikido is from a man who was a highly ranked judo and aikido man. I don't like it though, maby the self defence aspect of this style is better than what is shown here, but all the people playing this game on this vid would die in a real edged encounter, and quickly. Real knifers use the cutting edge and when you rush in will cut you in vital areas. This game is a joke.

  • They are only permitted to use some of the basic techniques - and none of the strikes. The other 3000 - 4000 techniques are not permitted. This Randori is not designed to simulate a real fight but rather skill up a person's reflexes and speed and try doing some of the techniques when the other person is not cooperating at all. But there is great restraint still being used. And remaining in some form of emotional and physical control while under stress and reading the other person is tough work.

  • i do other martial arts besides akido and i can't see the purpose of those sticks one competitor in each match has. is it a weapon? what's it for?

  • If you do Aikido, you should know that it is a Tanto, but that's ok, this is used in Tanto Randori, it is for scoring points as a knife strike, The other person intern must avoid the Tanto and throw for a technique or standing submission to receive points, This is something that they both do.

  • thanks

  • all individuals enter or stray from competition based upon their own personal situations. We all have different ideas of life and where we want to be in future years. who are we to say that students following only the physical aspects of Aikido teachings do not warrent the respect they deserve. Competition for me is a way of learning, developing and growing as an individual. we are in contant competition with ourselves and our current skills and abilities,am I wrong to develop myself?

  • When comments below talk about money making, as an organiser of comps. in the UK where this comp was based I can end the argument by saying none ever do make money.

Aikido competition is all about providing a vehicle through which one can improve and if one does improve one come out a winner. It's no cooincidence that the competitors I have seen within the British Aikido Association are also the technically better Aikidoka in the association.

  • My main discomfort with competition is that someone has to lose for someone to win. For that reason, I do not compete, but that should not stop others from doing so if they TRULY enjoy it and the "losers" come away just as satisfied as the winners.

  • anyone watching from brighton iitaikan have just spotted marco kieran and kirsty

  • yay, hardcore aiki!

  • Why did the man in black suit fell at the end of this clip?

  • I feel at the end whilst collecting a medal just as a joke. The guy following behind me to the stage fell whlist we were in the final of the ninindori, WE GOT SILVER. You can see that bit of film on aikido competition clips, not comp clips 2

  • Some Beautiful thorws in there.

  • AIKIDO rule's!

  • pretty damm good!!

  • This is pretty cool, I've never actual Aikido competition. Could someone fill me in on the rules???

  • I think only one sect of Aikido even does competition. In general, any form of competition is not taken place in; the Founder of Aikido thought that competition is little more than mutual self-destruction.

  • Depends on the translation of his words, I mean he did encourage the creation of the sport initially :-p, sorry to pop your arrogant bubble.

Yes, only shodokan (aka Tomiki Ryu) aikido has competitive form and randori. And the point is not to compete with others, but to find greater strength in competing with yourself to become beter

  • Arrogance would be the word of the day.

  • Sorry I came off rude in that statement, it is just an old long dead argument.

  • I do not buy the projection that the argument is dead or that the subject is decided and not to be brought up again. I think there is a reason why the Founder said, "There is no meaning in any kind of struggle." I think that competition is a way to instill conflict and struggle through judging egos against one another and against standards, and I think that the money-making/entertainment aspect of competition events in general is degrading the the spirit of the art.

  • To judge an organization that I will gander you have never even worked with or encountered based on some loose stereotypes seems rather biased and judgmental does it not?

  • Name the organization that you are referring to. I simply gave my interpretation of O'Sensei's words on competition, followed by another idea of this that backed my interpretation. I then listed 4 reasons why I thought the introduction of competition into Aikido would be unhealthy. I have no idea what organization you think that I am attacking.

  • By attacking competition you attack the only organization that competes, thus Shodokan (aka Tomiki).

Also, how much do you pay your sensei a month? or doesn't that count as making money? Ueshiba's words in context purely refer to war and acts of malicious violence, but each person may have their own perspective

  • This is great! We need more Aikido competition videos.
