It has alot to do with the driver. I've had Surf's (V6) that would go more places in 2wd than a Suzuki with 31"s'.
I had my Prado 90 out the other week in some pretty gluggy shit, it was goin more places than a Hilux on 35's and Terrano on 33's, and that was on A/t's,I haven't even had a chance to mod it yet and have had it in some rough country when hunting.
Any Toyota 4x4 is better than almost everything. (Not counting the RAV4 here!)
Prado is awesome 4wd, just learn how to drive it. Prado in this vid looks stock suspension, with shit tyres (road tyres?). Put a 2" lift and bigger tyres and they are very capable. Unfair to compare it to the hilux in your other vids.

I would agree with this not fair to compare with Modified Hilux , Put some good tyres on and a lift kit on the Prado and it will run rings around your craplux admiralbonehead
My 97 prado has surprised the shit out of myself and plenty of other people! the articulation out of the factory on these things is quite respectable and it can more than keep up with patrols and cruisers, anyways if you wanna hit offroad hard and fast just buy a dirt bike they are way more fun!
the prado is more than capable but most people dont actually use the potential of the car. Also most people just use A/T tyres and wonder why they get stuck in the mud they dont even reduce tyre presure
Aaaaaahhhh. Have a closer look. It's a Land Cruiser II ( LJ78). Sure it says Prado on the back but I mean the 90 and 120 series things. They are more of a yuppie, suburbanite bulk housing estate , pick the kids up from school type of car. I've been around 4WD's all my life and the new ones just don't cut it for me. Take a mate of mine, he just bought a new 200 series. It's nice and plush but I would not buy one to use off road.
my prado is jacked up with a tough set of hooves under her and would walk through that easily, zuno's right, a decent set of tread can do wonders to your vehicle. the prado is one of the most capable wagons in the toyota range i have ever owned or driven.(for a stock wagon that doesnt need aftermarket lockers to get her places, that is.) ALL THE BEST
It's a good car and I wouldn't mind having one. But the HJ60 in my books is far superior and I have driven quite a few different Toyota and other 4WDs. Of course the pick of the crop would have to be a Benz 300GD. Coming out of the factory in near military spec with all the options you have had to buy extra for the Landcruiser and so on. The problem is that the newer 4WDs are getting too yuppieish and they are not a real off road truck.
@admiralboner sorry man, but i agree with shagga. i think my prado is awsome and she is still stock. I was really suprise the i went more places the a hilux thats lifted 2"
@wronganswerswoody Im not worried about utes mate, i just dont like the way he called the prado a gay car. i like my 1999 mod :) best car ive bought so far

I knew I'd get comments like this if i posted something controversial. I'm comparing it to my Prado 1 or Landcruiser II is it is known not a Hilux. Although it only has the 2L-TE in it it would beat the Prado hands down in any situation even if it had higher suspension and all that. Automatics seem to go better off road too than the manual cars.
It has potential but it keeps getting stuck on the front skid plate. Every time we go out in the bush it always needs a tow. It is just too low. It's good as a mum's school taxi.
Momentum won't work if it is slippery. The track is steeper than it looks and pretty wet. In most cases traction is more important than momentum which only works at high speed.
Sure, but if you were here you'd see that there is no room to get a run up.
Plus with those roots sticking out you'd do a bit of damage pounding over them. low speed and torque have always gotten me through most obstacles rather than raw speed as most people do.
so true mate, the hj or fj 60 series are a beaut old bus, easy to fix and the like, but if you were gonna chase an older girl of that prestige, personally Id go for a 62series, 89-91,the diesel is still the 2h, and petrol the 3f.same shape, twin headlight, and a far better spring set up, good for towing the boat !! lol. I had 1 years ago and wished like hell I still had her, 80 series are/were so over rated. cheers mate

That Prado is only an RV with tiny tires and a soft driver, of course it performs poorly.
I'll take you on with my Prado!

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with your car. Good luck in choosing.

try doing it more than 1km per hour next time.
my prado has more ground clearance than a 40 and 70 series. no front diff to get stuck on.
Mud tyres 2" lift and traction control work well

@MRLUXIE utes are often too stiff and unbalanced, a well driven prado should easily out drive a hilux, its just all about wheel placement.

We'll try again when it's a bit drier. I made it up the track in my Prado under similar conditions. My car must go a bit harder.

Yes he is a wimp but revving it is not the key.
admiralboner 4 years ago
the prado isnt a gay car...
you just dont stop in the middle of a hill. the key to an off road ascent is momentum, you've got to keep momentum.

admiralboner 4 years ago
if its slippery, you wont get traction up a steep hill - this is where momentum is even more valuable.

ah ok then. my point was that didnt seem to keep his power constant. and he shouldve stayed outside of that middle rut.
