I think the "secret" is your beaters are pretty close to the head when you're not playing, but you start the motion with the beater resting on the head, let the beater fly off and past the "neutral" point, at which point the spring helps with the beginning of the down-stroke.
@RussellsParadox ,...hmmm uno i really cant explain it all i know is how it feels,..an now the beater dosnt have to be close to the head at all,...right now its set back really far sometimes it hit my foot as it comes back, the pedal can be as any setting really, you just have to build that strength and power up, then almost anything you play on it feels natural
