Those runs at 1:44 and 1:48 are particularly impressive. oh who am i kidding the whole thing is really impressive! And im sure youre not reading this but don't listen to anyone who says its not cool to play note for note, jazz is what you make it, honestly some seriously great jazz pianists have played some songs exactly the same. (: God bless.
@rfhanover1 Art Tatum always had insane variation from performance to performance not only melodically, but harmonically as well. Just like all the other great stride pianists, everything that played was constantly being rearranged in a capricious nature. Just watch the youtube video titled "Art Tatum plays Too Marvelous for Words (1940-1950)" and listen to his crazy variations between the two. If you can't hear that, then ask your music teacher or a local music professor.
What i want to know is this...if/when I tried to play something like this my fingers lock up, my mind shuts down, my back aches and my eyes glaze over.
What am I doing wrong lol
I might just manage the final arpeggio...on a good day.
Having watched dozens of Steph videos I wonder not only at her gift snd the years of dedication, she also must have an amazing memory to recall all these pieces so precicely. A modern musical wonder, and a lovely modest young lady.
@aknabea It might take superior talent, but it also takes a lot of hard work to get this good. I think that the effort she has put in is far more commendable.

Her second performance was nearly note for note with almost no variation. :( Sorry to say, but that's not jazz.

@evifnoskcaj
I guess Art Tatum wasn't a jazz pianist either then.
