I heard this song before I could walk. My mother would sing as dad played this great song on his electric guitar. My father played for over 60 years, passing away earlier this year and Merle was probably his most favorite guitarist next to Chet. He played many of Merle's songs. He played with a regular pick and bare-finger picked other notes because he said he never did find a thumb pick he felt comfortable with. lol Hearing these songs brings back so many memories. Rest in peace Mom and Pop
This song remains one of the most requested finger-picking guitar songs to this day...regardless of who recorded it way back when, and Merle's version is the template for all the versions that followed, from Mark Knopfler to Tommy Emmanuel and Jerry Reed...
@theoriginalbadbob Im afraid I have to take the utmost exception to your hypothesis. Les Paul is undeniably great, but neither he or Travis were Djaqngo Reinhardt, and that is who owns the song. Read what Les Paul says about him, Django gave him a Selmer 503, so there was mutual respect, but no one matched Django, period. Mr. Paul said after hearing Django, he thought he better learn how to sell shoes...it's not close. Les did so much more, Inventor of multitrack recording & solid body electric.
fantastic post..fantastic comments..no moronic, tasteless, uninformed "music fans" hanging around here.

Les Paul owns this song but Merle does things with his guitar that the great Les Paul never even dreamed of doing. Bravura performance, Merle.

Merle. One of the best versions of this song, ever. Extreme artistic talent. A great writer of songs, also.

Merle came from the coal fields of western Kentucky, down by the Green River where Paradise lay. Central City, KY to be precise.
