I was in eastern Texas in 1995 off the Neches river and I caught a 5 foot alligator gar. I also caught a spoonbill with a tag from Louisiana. I called Louisiana and found out they used tags in Texas! So the fish never swam from Louisiana unlike what I thought at the time!

Gar is a nasty fish that most fisherman will avoid trying to catch. The teeth inside that mouth are positioned like an alligator's and layered like a shark's. Most people won't attempt to get their lure/hook back because the bite from one of these can be devastating. Another disgusting feature of this fish is the amount of slime covering it. The gar has considerably more slime than catfish do and it's got a pungent odor; it smells like shit. Eating a gar is like eating a blue runner, disgusting!

I, sadly, know people that fish gar on purpose and eat them. Never understood WHY they do it, but they seem to like the fight. At least they eat what they kill... Cause they have to kill it to get the hook out safely, that or cut the line, which can lead to death if something happens concerning the hook and any line left attached to it.

I don't like fish myself. Unless I know someone that will eat the fish, I catch and release. LOVE fishing, don't love fish. xD

The alligator gar can grow up to about 7 feet long (maybe even more with time) and can weigh in at about 200lbs. They put up a crazy fight too. In Texas they're the diamonds of fishing.
