  • Best note name lesson ever - great job and thanks.

  • Just a simple "thank you" from an older picker.

  • hi sir am from bangalore in india i mastered what eva u taught me... .thank you:):)its worth it guys try this :):)....

  • I know suck but I have fun,I couldnt tell an a from a d or a c from an e ,wow just seems like work to me lol, thats why i became a musician

  • dmarks is fucking awesome rock on fools

  • i need a lot of help with memorising, i have spent weeks trying to remember the fret notes in order and stuff with a card that has a guitar on it and the notes, but it isnt helping for when i actually come to the guitar, i find it hard to remember all of them and to instantly know them but i looked at the exercises you have suggested and found them confusing (please help me!)

  • Thank you !

  • thank you for this easy to understand video. very good. no fancy fast playing, just purely instructional. 10/10.

  • This very lesson goes a very very long way for ground work on things to come to know and realize for ALL BEGINNING GUITARIST, I JUST WISHED YOU WOULD'VE GAVE THIS LESSON 20+ YEARS AGO, OPPOSE TO ME REALIZING IT WAS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE TO LEARN IN LATER YEARS IN ORDER TO STACK MORE ADVANCE WORK EASIER AND QUICKER. People/Guitarist now days are so bloody-lucky cause of all the tools to learn guitar in a fraction of a time compared to the old-school way!!!

    Great teaching as usual!!

  • DAMN DUDE, I REMEMBER TAKING YOUR COURSE ABOUT 20-25 YEARS AGO, WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT THE COMPUTER-AGE WOULD INTERVENE FOR WHAT IT IS NOW??!!

    ROCK ON!!!

  • When he said "Let's start off with some meditation." I really thought he was seriously going to pull some hippie thing.

  • Comment removed

  • Oooh man how long i've waited to have someone teach this at a simple teachable way, you are a guitar wizard! thx a whole lot!

  • P.S. as a side note I'm just a novice player (2 years). I do have my moments thou and am starting to build my own licks and style, hopefully this help me to finally make my head understand what my heart is playing. So thank you sir for your helpful vid

  • A way to memorize them even quicker, when you tune you know to use the 5th fret till b (4th) but, also the rule of tuning up is that you use the 7th fret (ex. 7th fret on D is A; the string above;) but you must remeber that yet again it has that half-step difference on B when tuning so instead of it being the 7th fret, its the 8th instead (for G: the string above).

  • Great lesson; something every serious player should have in their brain. If you think of your guitar as your business, the notes are your inventory. If you don't know the inventory, you have no idea what's in stock, what you can use and how you can use it.

For people searching and had no idea that they could learn their board or really how easy it is, this is a great video. Bottom Line - you can never master your guitar or truly spread your wings on the instrument, without this knowledge.

  • Good. Helpful. Surprised to know. Easy to understand and follow. Thanks & congrats.

  • hi your very good. only thing is your site is not abling me to download these exercises. you have another way i could do that?

    thanks,

    debi

  • @dayone54 Thanks Debi. Sign up for our newsletter on the left side of the page. You'll be sent a link to our video vault where you can download the materials.

  • Such a great teacher. So clear and easy to understand. I'll go join metal method now.

  • @oskaaron Thanks

  • would it be possible to memorize the sound of each note on the fretboard?

  • @wildwestpoint That's called perfect pitch. Most people don't have the ability to memorize pitch. Relative pitch can be learned. That's when a pitch sounds and you're able to identify other notes relative to that pitch. By relative I mean how the tone is related to the initial pitch.

  • @dmarks1 I know a guy that can do that. One day we were jammin, i had to use the bathroom, when i came out he had picked up my guitar and started to play on one string. So i jumped on the drums. While he was pickin on one string, I heard him play like two notes just right and said "hey that sounds like top gun", so he tried it again and I said "right there". He looked up and said "ok" and started playing top gun like he already knew how. It was awesome! It took some sounding out after 2nd bar.

  • the trick to teaching good music is how to make it an easier concept to grasp. thank you so much for having been able to teach the concept this way! I've been playing a long time but never really got down to the note names because it was too dull and dry

  • It is helpfull, BUT PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE EXERCISE INSTEAD OF ITS IMPORTANCE!!! D:

  • I'm more than sure this is the most useful video I've watched on Youtube...EVER. Thanks man :D

  • @MiltonBurnsRed That's great Milton. Thanks very much for that comment. I bet that you would like my guitar lessons.

  • You rock. No one has ever explained it like this.

  • @jtgdot73 Thanks. It's a system that I created so you won't find it anywhere else.

  • Very good, very well explained!

  • whatever

  • you can almost make it fun....LMAO

  • @MrMarkmyword You think this is fun? You should check out my lessons at metalmethod com. They are fun!

  • What a wonderful lesson. Great job. Thank you very much.

  • @sarg141 Thanks very much. Check out our Forum at MetalMethod com. Click on Message Board on the left of the page. Since you like the lesson you'll probably enjoy some of the other stuff happening at Metal Method. Thanks again for the compliment.

  • Excellent lesson. I'm a jazz piano player coming new to guitar. This lesson was a great assist, thanks!

I've discovered the guitar fretboard is laid out horizontally in 4th's, completely following the circle/cycle of 5ths/4th's. CFBbEbAbDbGbBEADGC. That's all 12 keys. Naming the note names horizontally across each fret follows the Circle of 4th's. EADG followed by a major 3rd between strings 3 (G) and 2 (B) then back to the circle for strings 5-6 (BE).

Know the cycle of 5ths/4ths (ii-V-I's)

  • excellent lesson!

  • Meditation time is awesome!

  • well this lesson is amazing! i am glad i got this valuable tutorial for free. i have started memorizing the notes now!

  • Oh, BTW I love the meditation in the beginning LOL I almost fell off my chair.

  • @M3NTA7 Thanks. My wife aimed the camera at me and hit record on her way out of the room. I did that for her. She thinks I'm crazy and she could be right.

  • @M3NTA7 Thanks for recommending my lessons. I also appreciate everybody that participates on our Forum. Cheers

  • Great!!! Shared on my facebook page ;)

  • @PierreUDINE81 Now that I appreciate. I want to be the next Justin Bieber. Make it viral! Thanks Pierre.

  • Been playing now 6 1/2 years,I quite often think to myself, how can 7 letters of the Alphabet be so confusing. So simple, but a never ending thought process to totally grasp everything those notes represent.

I have always known, to memories every note on the fretboard is the only way I will ever start to grasp guitar theory knowledge and understanding. It's been a struggle,

You have given me a much clearer path to retaining this knowledge to memory

    Thank You Doug !

    Geo.

  • @gdgeo I'm glad that I was able to help. When I post the online survey in a couple of weeks to see how you're doing. Please respond.

  • You're welcome. We all need a kick in the butt from time to time. I know that I do.

  • classy , man , this is just plain classy , i really enjoyed the video .

  • @GroovyGuitar02 Thanks I like that. Classy! I shot this thing 3 times until I got it right. I'm picky...and that's why I'll probably shoot it a fourth time.

  • I have played the guitar since the 80's, I remember when your lessons were on Cassette then VHS. I finally picked your program up on DVD a couple of years back and have learned more since then than I did before that. I never could instantly identify the notes on the guitar until I picked up your program. I definitely recommend this program to anyone starting out or someone who was just getting by like me.

  • @brokensoul70 I appreciate that. I did stress in the original program to learn note names and apparently you got it. Part of the reason I worked so hard on this video is, many of the 96% that responded to my survey were my students. Can you say failure? Me?

  • Great vid!! I don't know where I'd be without your videos!

  • @bagnalldr09 And I have no idea where I'd be without people like you willing to listen to me. Thanks.

  • What kind of Humbucker you got in that Carvin?

  • @dropless2002 It's called a Razor. If you like distortion I'm warning you to not put one on your guitar because you will no longer play your other guitars unless you put a Razor on them. I really like the Carvin humbucker but asked my tech to put something hotter in the bridge position. The coils are wound to infinity. Very hot.

  • You said it. No excuse!

  • @MadJesusSpades You (and I) are correct. I am going to put another poll up on the Forum in 3 weeks to see how everybody is doing. So, I'll be in touch over the next 3 weeks to be sure that people are following up on this. I want results!

  • Wow, I can't believe I never noticed the patterns. The pattern method makes it so much easier to identify the notes indeed. It's always the little tips like this that helps the most for people struggling to make progress. Much like the final piece needed to solve that fretboard puzzle.

Thank you very much for the lesson.

  • @nght5tlkr You're very welcome. I've been playing for more than 40 years and I never noticed the patterns until about a month ago. I've never heard this described anywhere before. This lesson is dedicated to my friend insomnia. I'm normally awake for an hour or two with nothing to do but think (it's 5:20 a.m. right now). I first thought about this and put together the D pattern. Then I started to fill out the fretboard. After I did the fourth pattern it was like, "That's almost every note!"

  • Doug Marks for me has been the gold standard or teaching guitar for the past 2 decades to those of us who do not have tremendous natural ability. His teaching ability remains in a class by himself.

  • @jciljciljcil Thanks you very much. I think the reason that I'm a good teacher is, I don't have a lot of natural ability and most of this stuff is aimed squarely at myself. I've had to teach a very poor student. Me.

  • Thank You for this video!

  • @Rctrilogy You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Awesome Lesson! Really appreciated! There are so many lessons out there that glaze over this or simply leave it out!

  • @cbem1004 I know. I have to say, the most recent version of my course didn't stress this enough and that's one of the reasons that I did this video. My explanation in the course didn't exactly do the trick when 96% that responded to my survey hadn't accomplished this.

  • Saint Marks does it again !!! This is the perfect kick in the butt I needed to get serious about learning the notes....... Awesome & Thanks!!

  • @alpine944 what about saint seiya?

  • @HaohmaruOfTheWind That one went over my head. I had to Google it. Now I can say...thanks!

  • Saint Marks does it again !!! This is the perfect kick in the butt I needed to get serious about learning the notes....... Awesome & Thanks!!

  • @alpine944 We all need a kick in the butt from time to time. I know that I do.

  • Very cool.... Doug, you are one-of-a-kind. Thanks for all you have done over the years for us hacks. You were impatient with me back in 1983 for not having any interest in theory. I still don't, but marvel at your teaching precision and passion.

  • @sparky7718 Thanks. I'm not passionate about theory either so I understand where you're coming from. I find it interesting and it gives me a different way of looking at music. BUT... and that's a big butt (no pun intended) I play popular music. Jazz, you need theory. Classical, you need theory. Neoclassical, you need theory. Popular music, folk, and blues are different. The Beatles couldn't read music. Jimi Hendrix knew sound but had a very limited understanding of scales. Nuff said.

  • Hey Doug! This is AWESOME! This will help my playing so much. i've been waiting for something like this. Thank you !

    -Yoichiro

  • @statlerhotel Thanks. Let me know how you're doing with this. I'm on the Forum all the time. I want to know if this works for you and if not I want to know why.

  • i appreciate your free vids and pdf downloads. at 50 i don't have time to justify any big money lessons, but just like to focus on just this type of learning. c major and pentatonic patterns and note memorization...amen. good for now. i get criticized for "not learning/playing any songs" , but i just want to learn "how to play" thank you. practice, practice, practice

  • @gonicjon You're right, you must play what you want to play. That keeps you coming back for more. What do you mean "at 50 I don't have time to justify..." That's when it's important to make every minute count. You've probably got another 40 years of guitar playing ahead of you. Spend your time efficiently to get the most out of your practicing. The problem with picking and choosing what to learn on the Internet is, you don't have a step by step approach that has proven to work. A plan Stan.

  • Thanks. I needed this. I have always been too lazy to learn the notes but I know I need to. I will do this.

  • @MadJesusSpades Just stick to the plan for the next 3 weeks and you will do this. Keep me posted on your progress.

  • This a great lesson, thanks Doug!

  • @jlogicalor Thanks. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

  • This is a first class lesson Mr. Marks! Great job.

I think many guitarists out here in internet land will benefit greatly from this info!

  • @norrisrw1 I agree. This is very much what is needed by many guitarists.

  • 1:18 how I feel when I record

  • @bebeard17 I can't respond to this because I would have to watch myself again for another minute and eighteen seconds.

  • Killer lesson Doug! Thanks so much for doing these...been a MM fan since I ordered and went through the whole course 10 yrs ago! You're the reason I've been able to gig regularly...killer stuff!

  • @guitarsforeveryone I'm glad that my stuff helped you and congratulations on gigging regularly. That's the best lesson of all.

  • I bought a lot of your lessons back in the late 80's and have in a band playing the club's since. Thank you for the great lessons.

  • @markclwsn Now that's a story I love to hear. There's nothing like playing in front of an audience. Glad I was able to help.

  • Great job on the vids. Already shared them with some folks I know who are just starting out. Thanks!

  • @cahill95ta Killer. If this thing goes viral I could be the next Justin Bieber. C'mon everybody spread the word. I'll give you a shout out from the Grammys next year. Seriously, thanks for sharing this. I appreciate it.

  • Thanks Doug, I had the Chance to watch the two newst (note memorization) videos you just posted. WoW! I hav been eagerly awaiting these since you first mentioned them on the Metal Method Blog. I plan on purchasing the download versions of these 2, along with the new Melodic Principals vol 2,3. Thanks From 67 Spaceace.

  • @67spaceace You're welcome 67spaceace. The video is now available for download but if you have a good Internet connection the YouTube version is just as good. Of course I could always delete this. Heh heh heh hehe. There is method to my madness!

  • I've been playing on and off for 20 years. This lesson is well worth it and I will be purchasing the first two lessons of the basic course to fill in the huge gaps I know that I have. Thanks for posting this Doug.

  • @jericho4004 You're welcome. A lot of people ask me which lesson to choose from The Complete Basic Course. I always tell them if they can afford it start at the beginning because there are things on every DVD that are helpful to all levels. Even the best guitarists in the world practice the fundamentals every day. Yesterday I practiced bending notes to pitch for a half hour. That's beginner stuff.... not really. How many people can bend to pitch without vibrato? Study the fundamentals.

  • Great job man...I'm gonna pass this on to some friends who this could definitely help

  • @dreffett Thanks. I appreciate you sharing this.

  • good video Mark. This will help many people! It's great to know all the notes and then have the control to pick which one you want at the right time.

  • @KrazyKali69 I like that "pick which one you want at the right time." Thanks for the comment.

  • You're awesome. Thanks for the lesson.

  • @Tiberiusize You're welcome. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
