  • i love the sound of this instrument when it is played in the good the bad and the ugly

    on "the soldiers theme"

  • Hello, cor anglais enthusiasts! Thank you for your very appreciative comments on this video. It's a wonderful piece, isn't it?

    Althea

  • I'm a trombone player, but I've always wanted to play English Horn...

  • I want to play one, they make such a nicer sound than an oboe, like in between an oboe and a clarinet

  • Wonderful job, Althea! I've always loved the English horn (maybe because I was a violist for almost two decades) and you really make it sound good! Everyone I've ever known who's played English horn to any extent always complains about how hard it is to play well and to play in tune, but your playing makes it sound like an easy instrument! Keep up the good work!

  • Very nice. Always thought this instrument could make some sad sounding melodies. Also romantic.

  • lovely timbre

  • Wow! Thanks for posting this video. You have a fantastic sound -- smooth& nuanced. I obtained a cor anglais just amonth ago, and now I know the sound I should start working toward (no guarantee that I will ever get there)!

  • The oboe is overrated. The English horn is where it's at. :)

    (The heckelphone is awesome too.)

Anyway, this was very, very well-performed.

  • Wow...that was just lovely. I especially thought 4:36 to 4:51 was awesome. I've never listened to an English Horn before and was just captivated through this whole performance. Thanks for posting and also for the high quality recording !!

  • Lovely playing and very stylish too - thanks very much for sharing.

  • @SouthpawdShredder Band director fail... how is he conducting anything? lmao

  • Wow, beautiful tone! I miss playing the English Horn! :) Brings back so many memories.

  • Amazing!

  • Incredible, That was beautiful

  • Even though I was watching this video from the beginning I really thought the first note was an opera star, what a phenomenal sound!

  • Lovely stuff. The oboe family has come a long way since the aulos and the shawm.

  • @Lisnageeragh yes. Key of F. Transpose a perfect lower than written (ex. A c is actually the f below, just like french horn)

  • @QTKittenz treble, it sounds a perfect fifth lower than written just like french horn and is in the key of F

  • @Dragonspirit999 please don't say that ever again...

  • i love cor anglais! its so beautifull! ♥♥

  • wow! what a lovely sound! great job!

  • You play very beautifully. I've never played the english horn but I did play the oboe for about 8 years. I really should get another one I do miss it greatly.

  • pimped out clarinet :D

  • @Dragonspirit999 Right now, every oboist that reads this probably wants to jump you.

  • A transposing instrument?

  • very nice sound

  • which cleft is the cor anglais in? Bass or treble?

  • @QTKittenz It is usually written in the treble clef

  • Wow, beautiful sound! I play the french horn, but english horn sounds better!

  • I play the oboe too! I'm considering switching to the english horn but I'm wondering if it's going to be a hard transition?

  • @oboelover95 I don't think. I don't play the oboe and the english horn, but I was told that the fingering is very similar...

  • @oboelover95 it takes alot more wind than the oboe, you're basically playing out alot more, compared to oboe, where you're usually holding back.

  • i play the oboe and i really want to learn how to play the enlish horn but my band teacher doesnt have one!! anybody know where i can get one???

  • By far the best english horn video on the internet! This has to be my favorite double reed video on the internet!

  • Exquisite!

  • Lovely performance of a beautiful piece! Wonderful tone and phrasing, and nice accompaniment, also.

  • i play oboe and my teacher said If I wanted to switch to e horn I could. Should I?

  • @Wolfoxtail you don't really have to "switch", you can play both! English horn is so beautiful and fun to play, I'd recommend it! (but you don't have to give up oboe!)

  • YOU BOTH PLAY SO NICELY. you play english horn with so much expression i love it i love it

  • Wow! I'm so glad that the equipment to record this performance is so great, as it is a perfect representation of your flawless tone and technique!

  • BEAUTIFUL! I can't wait to play this peice for S&E if its available what key is it in? (concert pitch)

  • really nice!!! I like a lot!!!

  • You won't be able to get the music for free, unless your high school is happy to pay, but you can purchase it online from June Emerson Wind Music in the UK. Also, T.W. Howarth may have it in stock. Both shops can send the music to you in the States. You can search online to find their websites. The oboe d'amore is in the key of A, by the way. All the best!

  • from one english horn player to another is there ANY way you could get a copy to me.. or send me to a place(online) where i could get it for free? our high school doesn't have ANY concerto for oboe/english horn

  • wow my band director said that an engish horn is like a big french horn but its more like a big oboe! lol

  • @SouthpawdShredder Wha? Wow,English horn and French horn are in two different families. I'm curious to know where your band director got that comparison. The only similarity between the two is that they both sound beautiful XD

  • @SouthpawdShredder And if he said that, he should take a few more music classes. I am a Junior (2 years away from graduation) and I am a music major and I can honestly tell you that the English Horn sounds NOTHING like a big French Horn. Do you play one or does your band director play one?

  • @SouthpawdShredder youshould slap him/her

  • @SouthpawdShredder You should be careful about what that particular band director tells you!

  • @SouthpawdShredder As well as the french horn, the english horn (alto oboe) is tuned in F. But it belongs to the oboe's family, like the oboe d'amore, baroque oboe, the bass oboe and he piccolo oboe.

  • @juanchomusic Actually, the Oboe D'amore is considered the alto oboe, while the English Horn is more like the baritone.

  • @ctk530 Sorry. The English Horn range is actually very compatible with the alto register of the human voice (E below middle C to C two octaves above middle C). It is not a baritone instrument. I believe the Oboe d'amore is actually a mezzo-soprano instrument, by the way.

  • @ctk530 well tenor, but yes

  • @SouthpawdShredder When I ask some of my friends if the knew what an english horn was they think of brass instr. as well^^ but this no way a brass instrument, it's a reed instrument ;). Some of them don't even know the difference of e contrabass and a cello, but hey, if they asked me who which singer won the grammy I would not know it as well cause I don't listen to this kind of new century music. This is much better and more beautiful. ;) What is it like to play it? Difficult? Any requirements?

  • @SouthpawdShredder Feeling a bit nervous that he's a band director...

  • This is a beautiful piece :D

  • I'm not quite sure what Handel has to do with this piece by Reicha...! Anyway, thanks for the kind remarks about my playing, but we work out our interpretations together. It's necessary to have a good strong start to an accompaniment which was originally written for orchestra in a dramatic, operatic style.

  • Althea's playing shows a lovely sense of understanding at the deepest level. However, the piano (even on short stick) accompanying it doesn't. It sometimes tries to dominate. Handel did not have a concert grand!

  • beatiful tone!
