Oh yea, running up the face of a 10-12 footer only to crash down the other side, was on mlb's at Ft. Point, now Sta. Golden Gate. They weren't very fast but you could count on them getting you home everytime. You would think they were going like crazy the way those detroits were screaming. But alas, only 10kts, all day and night.
Its rare to see one of them...great find...Unfortunatly all 44's have been retired...most sold to other countries...they are restoring one of the original at Cape Cod (44301)

The 44's were a true motor life boat, not to much electronics but required a lot of muscle and grit.

ya and theres 1 in michigan restored and now in the uscg auxillary (not shure of number) truly spectactular vessels

I was cox'n for 44321 and 41491 over at the Canal Station from 89-92' - miss that workhorse!! (rockn & rollin!!)
They've got one in a fantastic static display at the Astoria Maritime Museum in OR
