This isn't about competition! Patti is Mariah's godmother for heaven's sake. They're dueting; this is real music, Patti's style and power complimenting Mariah's vocal prowess - the high notes, belting and all. All the squabbling is rather pointless.
Mariah has the notes, Patti can't reach the low notes, nor the high whistle, but Patti has tha powerful voice, I say this is a great duet. If you listen closely is Mariah whistle what you hear as the peak note, but Patti's voice is strong, good for both they did great, this is entertainment music.

@taurusg32 I honestly don't think they did, - a lot of them even have breathing noises in, but they are subtle. I do believe that a lot of her earlier live performances were so spot on that it just sounded that way- they even put her Oh Holy Night live straight onto the new cd, and they played her live I'll be There performance on the radio applause included.. But I dont want to argue I just wanted to politely say that I disagreed.

@taurusg32 What are you talking about...the only altered performances in her prime (90-96) were dubbed over for professional release. She has perfect breath control - that's why the majority of her catalogue is insanely hard to sing in the right key, in the right time, and hit the same notes.

Mariah doesn;t seem to have a very strong head voice.
When Patti dos the so ho so ho sho I gotta have you baby.
Mariah doesn't seem to be able to hit those notes.
Also - If you take a look at Mariah performing live with Aretha on Chain of Fools - Divas Live 98 - when Aretha sings the wo hos (bridge ending) - Mariah isn't able to sing with her head voice and has to match her singing with her chest voice (which in itself is quite a feat as chest voice don't normally go up as high as head voice.

If a performer can only perform the highs or whistle register in the studio - it doesn't say much for their voice - or at least that part of their voice.
Ill admit on CD Mariahs voice is a technical marvel - but she doesn't seem to be able to bring that magic to a LIVE setting.
Don't get me wrong she sings great in this video - BUT she is unable to match Pattis high notes - Mariahs head voice is non existant in this performance and she sings from her chest - WHY? your guess is as good as mine!!

Its not about how high a singer can hit,its about the voice timbre and MC has an alto voice (also her "comfort singing zone" is in the lower register) but can hit way higher notes than a coloratura Soprano...apart from this MC said shes an alto in a interview.

@shacks29 I am aware of that, Mariah has said that naturally she is an alto but she also has soprano notes without the whistle register. She definitely has coloratura notes but she is listed in many different documents as an alto and a soprano. She is both.

Mariah has the notes, Patti can't reach the low notes, nor the high whistle, but Patti has tha powerful voice, I say this is a great duet. If you listen closely is Mariah whistle what you hear as the peak note, but Patti's voice is strong, good for both they did great, this is entertainment music.
