Brush fires in California are brutal..That's all CA is is Scrub pine and brush that burns really hot. I don't second guess their use of aerial assult.
Seriously fully relying on air attack is abit of an overkill for a grassfire here in South Australia we can rely fire appliances to do the first attack and normally have it knocked down in the first 10-20 minutes
The only time we ask for air attack is when it takes off in the blink of an eye in scrub or pines
You have to realize that there are 40 or 50 million people in CA, not a lot of open space, that and fire season starts in March, and ends in December. Australia has a little more space to let things play out.
what a waste....were I'm from we use these things called firetrucks and people.....we have a tiny volunteer department and they could attack that in about 20 with no specialized equipment....MAYBE we could get a 30 thousand liter(about 7 thousand gallon) tanker from the nearby city(Medicine Hat, AB, Canada) and i live about 2 hours away from a major city(over a million people) and when they wanted a medical helicopter they raised money for it and dont waste it on stuff like this...
so lets see if I got this right. That is from California, where you guys probly spend more on helicopter fuel for one fire, then the total operating costs for one week here? but its ok cuz it california? how is it different then the grassfires here? I wasnt bragging about my dept, just saying that it is a waste of money for the aviation fuel, when they could use manpower and and get it done faster.
@TravisDMeier Travis, the problem is you "don't" have it right. This video shows a fire with relatively slow spread rates, but many of Cali's fires have ANYTHING but slow spread rates. Their initial response to vegetation fires though perhaps big in comparison to some volly bunch like your own, is done out of learned necessity from fires in "their" ecosystem... their fuels... their weather... not Alberta's. You need a little more humility and education.
@Timtenbits blah blah blah... you and your volly crew could save the world... we get it... meanwhile Calfire and other California FDs are fighting potentially catastrophic fire conditions EVERY summer... they hit them hard and contain a vast majority of them BEFORE they go big... You don't know what the heck you are even talking about
Yeah what's the go with all the bombing? Here in Australia it takes a massive fire for us to get air support. Normally we have to knockdown from the back of the truck and then go round blacking out.
Do you use bombing just because it is available or are you limited in your knockdown in brushland because of the design of your trucks?
One more question. How much water do your trucks here carry?
As for air attack, it's just readily available, so we use it whenever possible. As for water, most engines carry 500 or 600 gallons plus at least 20 gallons of foam.
u made this look awesome!!!...of course it would be awesome any wa y you did it... but this video is great. it would be so cool to have chopper aid at my house. here in southern Illinois, probly about 90 percent of our calls are brush fires, although they never really get to be real big.
It's cool how firefighters in Cali are mostly paramedics. Out here in South Dakota, if there's ever a wildland incident, we have to call in crews from BHNF and the BIA. It's interesting to see how the CDF uses computers and hi-tech command trucks. Out here, no such thing within a 400 mile radius.
Wow I used to live on that street and I remember when this happened. Oh one more thing.... LUKE HIRST!!!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOT!!!! I drove out to that huge fire way out off of tassajara rd, and I parked on the side of the road. There was a silver VW sedan in front of me... The license plate? Well I won't say it for Luke's sake but It was him! Lucas Hirst Himself! Yeaaaaaaa! :)
Next time you see me say hello! That fire off of Tassajara, (Actually Collier Canyon) ended up being pretty big. Oh and P.S. Check out my website at lucas911 or luke911 ;-)

where you are from..you don't deal with California wildfires..so don't brag about how your department could handle that in 20 minutes

Doesn't seem cost-effective use of resources...heli drops in the wrong place i.e. inside blackline. What about pump&roll?
