my heart skiped a bit. I first heard this song back in Russia, couldn't understand a word, but music ang Martin's voice moved me. In a manner of speaking I just want to say I appreciate the beauty of this piece much more now, when I understand the deepness of it's lyrics

Actually the original from '85 is by Winston Tong. Gore recorded this in '89, and the name "Counterfeit" for the e.p. pictured was chosen because all the tracks thereupon are cover songs.

Martin may have a better singing voice then Dave but Dave's Voice has much more charachter than Martins. Daves voice is Depeche Mode while Martins is just another good singing voice. Heck Kurt Cobain couldn't really sing but he was a one off which was why Nirvana were so good same as why Depeche stand out its Daves voice !

Well said, Tidpole. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Yeah, Mart is a fabulous singer, but Dave's voice is instrumental to Depeche Mode and as such it simply wouldn't be the same group without him.

My roomate in college had this album & I copied it onto a cassette back in 1989. I still have it. I was too poor back then to buy my own copy. I met Martin once, in 1990, through a friend, Michelle Chapman. I was a huge fan. Back then, The Oregonian ran an article calling him "A Dwarfish Non-Entity." He said he tried not to let those kinds of comments bother him, but it did hurt.

This one was originally written & recorded by Tuxedomoon, from their most commercial-sounding album "Holy Wars" (1985ish?). Gore is a very talented arranger and a great vocalist, but the vocal delivery on the original is infinitely more moving imho. Not as polished, more fractured...
