I've watched stevie ray for what must be thousands of hours, and those doing covers of his work, and you're definitely one of the most impressive.
One thing which distinguished Stevie Ray was that he had an impeccable sense of timing. I think it was, at least in part, attributable to the fact that he also was accomplished on the drums.
So I guess that's my suggestion. If you wish to become a player on the same level, spend some time learning drums.
There are several quitarists playing Testify on YouTube and this is the best that I have heard. Most are too sterile for my taste.
You don't quite have the intensity of Stevie, but who does? But the spirit is there and you're young. I'm sure that Stevie didn't have this level of skill at your age.
I've listen to John Mayer play SRV and he always sticks to the safer tunes IMO and people think he's a god.
dang, keep it up, your playing is really really good. i think you have a wonderful future in music, if you choose to pursue that. hope you do. aim for the stars.
btw could u help me with this playing by ear thing. U know it is easy to play slow melodies, but what about songs like tesify by srv, how do u play by ear the solos which are quite fast paced. I would appreciate if you could guide me on this.
Also ur playing is really commendable. Keep it up.
Thank you! The only way I can help ya is to just listen carefully, just note by note. And sometimes what really helps me is to learn to play the notes with my voice then go back and figure it out on guitar. Stevie actually said that and I tried it once when I was stuck, and it really works. The longer you practice learning by ear and learning a particular style like Stevie's it'll get easier to recognize what they're doing. Even slow motion the solos if you can. I've done that before g/l !!
I've been playing guitar since Nixon was honest and let me tell you that I really enjoyed that!
Now all you need is a band (and a kewl band name like "THE MOODY DEATH featuring AMBER") and, I'll buy your disks!
Get a bunch of older guys to back you, though. If that hurts some male guitarists' egoes then let it hurt! You don't play well "for a chick". You play great, period!
Why don't you run away and live as a hobo for a while? Maybe get a few tats? That'll really add to your legend! ;)
Amber, thats awesome, i still have a hard time with how much you have advanced in a short time, you should come up this summer you are ready to jam with the band. love cooley
