I wish this big strong hillbilly girl had put that skinny snake Olive away for good. It would have taken about 10 seconds more of her attention to put her away for good. Even Popeye knew he could not handle this powerhouse of a woman w/out spinach.
That's a woman?? I watched it without sound and I was enjoying the fact that Olive was being very heroic and saving Popeye from that abusive, crazy guy! I thought it looked very feminist, but I guess now it makes sense - the only situation where a woman is allowed to be brave and stand up for herself is when she is "fighting for her man" and emphasizing the notion that she could only have value if a man wants her.

Many say the voice is a young Carol Burnett who was doing cartoons about this time. Sounds like it could be her. Good voice for the bog strong hillbilly..and Olive too.
Ahh even though the old cartoons aren't as serious or hyped up as modern cartoons are they do have a relaxing,easy going, average day vibe to them. I had only finished gurren lagann recently and it was intense, but after that this is a good way to relax from those hyped up thoughts.

I love how Possum treats Olive like she's a flea she can swat away or kill at will. They should have used Possum in other episodes, though she was so much stronger than Olive that I'm not sure what else she could have done to her without killing her. She was stronger than Bluto and Olive is a skinny wimp. Complete mismatch.

@MrJP75 Rising costs was one reason the style diminished/died. In the 50s, movies got loooooooonger and there often wasn't time to put in cartoons. Old animators didn't teach the younger set their tricks. The "UPA" style meant cartoon makers (including Disney!) took radical shortcuts. Add all these up and throw in generations that didn't have attention spans and voila. At least the greats are preserved!

Trees and mountains became triangles and vertical lines over a rectangle of solid color. Curves became angles. Depth vanished. Compare "Hillbilling and Cooing" with "Possum Pearl" a cartoon featuring the same hillbilly Amazon, but made about two years later than the former.
Possum was too nice to Olive. She should have finished her off for good. That was 5 more seconds of effort and Olive was done for good. Too bad Hollywood and cartoons don not work that way.
Here's an interesting bit of news: Sony Pictures is looking to produce a 3D Popeye movie, according to Wikipedia!!! With Jim Carrey as Popeye, and Amy Adams as Olive Oyl!!!

Big smile from Possum at 4:03 as she marches to tree stump to drill Olive at 4:07. Olive out cold with tongue out and hair all messed up at 4:11. 12 seconds to end put her deep into stump. Big smile on the last 9 seconds of 12 second fight. Olive left for the birds to finish off.
Fastest and most one sided fight ever at 3:54 . Love the look on her face at 4:03 as she carries her over by the hair and then the drilling that goes on. She should have said "you teach me what skinny?" after Olve said she was going to "teach you to chop down my Popeye. Possum crushes Olive. Love it.

Hey texslim or anyone who might know---I recall a Popeye episode where he is talking or singing in a raspy Popeye voice, then he segueways into a smooth, superb, Hank-Williams-Type yodel. Does anyone know that episode ? Also, unrelated cartoon: does anyone know the name of the toon where this rube sends for boxing lessons via post, and the delivery guy arrives immediately but apologized for being delayed and the rube says "that's OK pop" and delivery guy says Welllll, U can't please everybody!"

Yeah but did you notice how solid a "pimp slap" it was. Look at the balance she showed, she properly set herself even though she was holding Popeye in the other hand. She turned her hips into the proper position, got full extension and man what a follow through!
When Olive drives it away, it still does. In later shots (thanks to toon continuity) the tire is fixed. Also, does the model of the car change, I have a feeling it does.
If only Bluto were in this cartoon, I'm sure the giant hillbilly woman would marry and make babies with him.

Hey texslim or anyone who might know---I recall a Popeye episode where he is talking or singing in a raspy Popeye voice, then he segueways into a smooth, superb, Hank-Williams-Type yodel. Does anyone know that episode ? Also, unrelated cartoon: does anyone know the name of the toon where this rube sends for boxing lessons via post, and the delivery guy arrives immediately but apologized for being delayed and the rube says "that's OK pop" and delivery guy says Welllll, U can't please everybody!"

I'd say she looks more like Kate Smith than Rosie. Rosie would be attracted to Olive and be trying to get rid of Popeye. Rosie is so fat and out of shape she couldn't punch her way out of a paper bag. Nobody is as ugly as Rosie.

When Olive drives it away, it still does. In later shots (thanks to toon continuity) the tire is fixed. Also, does the model of the car change, I have a feeling it does.
