Sometimes the comments are so reductive and simplistic.
If Ella Fitzgerald went onto Major Bowes Original Amateur Hour, she would have dwarfed that talent back then, too. It proves nothing comparing her to today when at her time she was at the top, with the greats, already

just take the standard female version, and replace the words if that is necessary. If you mean performed by a male singer, perhaps Sinatra or Deano? just a guess
isnt this charlie parker on sax? it sounds like him or i must change to new ears .would give so much for having the chance to sing ON TIME in my live with ella.
@c1wang I agree with you on this one.....American Idol would be blown away. That is such an on-point comment...thank you for this....Now this is how you sing...
@pjwinick no. they would not even know how to market her. American Idol is not worth the dirt under Ella Fitzgerald's nails. Don't stain her magnificence by putting that bullshit of a show and Lady Ella in the same sentence.
@pjwinick A talent like this came onto american idol...her name was Lily Scott from this season...she actually sang this song on american idol during hollywood week
Her voice so clean, so gentile, so strong, such nice, this voice of the girl in which I should like to fall in love. If my mother in the childhood sang me song, that she had such voice!
She does this song too with Diede. Check out the list of vids on the side you'll see it. If you dont see it, search Diede & Hester - Lullaby of Birdland (jazz). They do a modern version of it. With all due respect to Ms Ella, if you love hers', you'll love theirs. : )
So lovely. Seems like it's becoming a lost art to really sing beautifully (or write beautiful songs, for that matter). I played this for my parakeets (it is lullabye in birdland, after all), and they liked it too. One tucked her head in for a nap, so it is a fitting name to the song, LOL.
I sang this song in my high school jazz choir last year and I love it! Ella Fitzgerald is THE greatest singer of all time in my opinion. Such lyricism and expression paired with near flawless intonation--wow!
I do love this song. Ella Fitzgerald new how to make songs immensely amazing! i do wish more people would play these songs for their amazingness. They are truuue inspirations.

That's funny! I read Ella said she learned most from the horns. (or did you refer to this line?) Ella has a very special way of singing and I can't figure out what it is exactly: she speaks the words and she doesn't seem to hold back one inch. Upmost: she sings all her feelings out. She's my heroine!
Well... of course, but for her SCATTING. Not her overall SINGING. In fact, what's ironic is that even though she was a better singer (in my opinion, and many others) than Billie Holiday, Billie was prettier in the eyes of her days (before she overdosed 'dem drugs), which is why she was featured more than Ella in a lot of things. But Ella had a unique sound that horn players wanted to imitate.
holiday only had around a one octave range, but she used it masterfully, although ella was definitely better. they both had a broken quality about them, but band leaders were drawn only to billy by a desire to protect her because she was prettier. when they heard ella sing, though, they loved her just as much.
