  • A blast from the past... No good music from a time I wish the world would reset to

  • I love this music. It is calming.

  • And I LOVE this song, first time I heard it, it was with my mom in a car driving across half Sweden to my Grandma, I was about 8 years old. And every singel day from I heard it, I rememberd every word from this song (but I couldn't speak or english) and I knew how that song went in my head. And from that day, I love country music thanks to my mom.

  • When did Ricky Nelson past away from us?? :'(

  • This song is about taking adversity and turning it on its head. He went to a Garden Party -- Madison Square Garden -- to sing his songs. When he sang some of his newer stuff... he was booed. At least he heard booing and thought it was about him. So he left the stage and did not come back. Chuck Berry (Johnny B Goode) played after him.

So Ricky decided to do a song about this bad event and it became his next hit.

  • @DURound I was there !!! It was a rock & roll revival show and the crowd was not into the new stuff. He got a great song out of it.

  • How could anyone dislike this ? God bless you Ricky,,,RIP.

  • In his youth, Ricky Nelson was almost pretty, but he never used his looks in a bad way. I believe he was always a fine musician. He had the advantage of having parents in the entertainment business, and he used that advantage well. Sometimes, in today's world people tend to think that all advantages like family connections, money, fame, or whatever, are automatically unfair, but when it comes down to it, talent and hard work on the part of the artist is what makes a long term career.

  • he stood the test of time...some good, and some bad. A great entertainer and singer.

  • johnny b good )))

  • Wow this guy was good.

  • "But it's all right now. I learned my lesson well. See, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself."

I find this lyric to be profoundly wise

  • that little dod do do do dododododooo at the last makes the song

  • I saw him in his last performance in Ohio...I had kept the flyer from the concert and had his boys sign it 4 1/2 years later when they appeared in the same club...Matthew held it up to Gunnar and said "Check it out man" and then told me "Cool, very cool" and thanked me for bringing it,,,

  • Never buy a over-size worn out jet from Jerry Lee Lewis the gas tanks leaked and blew it Excuse the screen-name I mean no dis-respect the six souls lost are the strings of a standard guitar. and the day the music died for so many rockers

  • RIP Rick, you and your music will carry on forever.

  • 26 years ago, today he died

  • Damn! When are musicians and rock stars gonna get it. They need to stay out of airplanes.

  • i grew up listening to ricking nelson and love his music

  • His last picture was taken with a teacher from the school in my town. God Bless!!!!!!!!

  • @MrTenitis hahaha..exactly ;)

  • They say the good die young. Elvis, Ricky, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, just to name a few.

Loved Ricky and his music. That voice, those eyes, that hair, and I agree with @ranchhand333 Thanks for risking your life for all of us. Gone but not forgotten!!

  • Rick was a special person, I was blessed to call him friend, he is still missed

  • Died way too young.

  • Did he not have hair to die for?

  • @cowbellpeaceprize Yes. He had a wonderful head of hair.

  • @ranchhand333

    Godbless you Sir!

Thank you for risking your life for me and all America at such a turbulent time in our history. Sincerely, stw

  • awesome song

  • always loved this classic! simple, catchy & pure ! i'm 100 % heterosexual but even i can admit that rick was one hell of a good looking man! and talented !

  • Imagine playing under those hot lights with a tweed jacket on .. plus a shirt !! I used to play with a shirt and vest and it was hotter than hell !

  • Ricky's music was the best. I loved it so much!! LOL

  • @CaliforniaSheri I followed Ricky since 1966 .. when my Mom first introduced me to his Million Sellers album and Have Been a follower ever since .. thanks Sheri

  • This man is 45 years old in this video.....I'm a guy...and not one of them....but I sure wish I looked this good at 45.

  • It is Alright Now !

  • I can listen to his songs for hours without getting tired.

  • He aged very well.

  • unfortunately, Ricky died in a plane crash a few weeks later.... we love and remember you Rick!

  • @chrisiden1 Actually he died December 31, 1985.

  • @chrisiden1 If this video was from a concert in August of 85, then no it wasn't a few weeks later, the Crash was on December 31st .

  • @chrisiden1 Ricky Nelson passed away 4 months after this concert on New Years Eve 1985

  • I want to thank my first and only ex wife Annette Turner ...who got me the whole Ricky collection for my birthday ...cheer's Pat Benetar ..and yes in my hreat of hearts you really did look like Pat Benetar xoxo

  • i think it shows his class when he can get back on stage and pull it off.not many would or could but he did. its 2011 now and i finally really listened to the words after all these yrs .and i feel sorry for him.

  • How can you dislike this video?

  • @JBTparkourJSW No taste for music and talent. That's why. I just wish that they would leave OUR music alone. if you don't like it don't watch, simple really.

  • Garden Party was the 1st song he had recorded in years

  • Play the old songs...well...your sorry ass is pretty much fucked and NO, you are way too stupid to even THINK about responding.

  • ___RICKY ,,,YOU ARE STILL THE KING !!!,,, :)

  • looking at this video he is so with the times of the 80s and looks so young that it's hard to believe he was also famous in the 50s

  • wow, elton john on piano yoko ono and bob dylan in the audience. doesn't get any better

  • Mercy Killing

  • Old Yeller

  • To Kill a Mockingbird

  • 1984 George Orwell BIG BROTHER double speak. SIGH

  • xvideos.com

  • ok

  • Rick(Y) your l´loveed here in Sweden... Youll know that!

  • So many great artists lost to early....

  • Is he wear the wig?

  • @hama0830 No wig. He had great hair.

  • "You gotta please yourself", huh? So is this a song about masturbation or what?

  • @patientb5 Is there room for one more in the Dungeon of Tools?

  • Rick wrote this song in response to a crowd that booed him off the stage when he refused to sing his oldies. Get `em Rick!

  • @Sparky1002 That's a fact. He got so tired of the old stuff, and his audiences never wanted to hear the new things he was writing. Lots of luck finding much of anything new from the 70's.

  • Such a great story and lesson for all of us!

  • I saw him at an outdoor concert either in 1984 or 1985. Really glad I got to see him...love his music.

  • i want to go to that garden party too

  • This is an awsome song....

  • I pride myself on hitting a nerve. Happy aneurysm, fool!

  • @scottmalec ...Hey! I think I know you.I think I've seen you under the Big Top.

  • His plane I believe went down near Dekalb,Texas. I want forget that morning, my family and I were on our way to Texarkana. And they broke the news on the radio about his plane crash. I was not so much a big fan of his too young at the time I guess. But my father really liked him a his family.

  • Yuko brought her walrus their was magic in the air

  • Don't know about the cocaine but being an early rocker myself, it was as easy as falling off a log. They did drugs...

  • Rock on Rick

  • I Have To Say It Again!

    My God He Was Gorgous!!

Was Ahead Of His Time, Or Should I Say His Father Was Ahead Of His Time.

Ozzie Could See Into The Future Of Music.

  • Rick rocked.

  • Saw him at a county fair in the early 80's. He was very good (not coked out I guess) and really rocking hard. He really did hate doing all the old songs, but when he introduced some new stuff, people actually booed (morons). One of the best lines in music: "If memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck."

  • My band opened for Rick in September of 1985 - we opened for them numerous times whenever they came to town. This particular time was a bit different. The guys in the band were mentioning to us about how some of them hated and feared the "rickety" plane. When I heard of the accident I was shocked.

  • AHH what wonderful teen memories of Rick nelson had his picture on my wall he was special!!!

  • 10 people werent invited to the garden party

  • SAW HIM IN CONCERT HE WAS GREAT AND HE EVEN SHOOK MY HAND ON STAGE....THAT WAS IN 86 I THINK HERE IN ARLINGTON TEXAS

  • @kenyongreg Could not have been 1986. Rick died in a plane crash on December 31, 1985.

  • @kenyongreg you on drugs? Eric Hilliard Nelson (May 8, 1940 – December 31, 1985

  • at least 10 people have no taste!

  • That show made him famous,I understand that it must of been painful, but he turned into a prema-dona,once no one liked his own music.

  • Jeez, Sam sings a lot like him (not voice-wise, but the way he moves his mouth and doesn't quite form that end of words) and Matthew and Gunnar, though they didn't get his coloring, look a lot like him as they've aged. Such a cool family! My mom had a big crush on "Ricky" and it passed on to me. LOL.

  • I'm 35 and I remember 'Hello Mary Lou' and 'Travelin' Man'. He had such a great voice, and was simply gorgeous! His sons are also quite talented.

  • classic song classic singer

  • Is it just me, or does Ricky seem to be not all there?

  • Comment removed

  • @AngelaRed Ricky is sweating buckets while the rest of the band seem very comfortable...

  • @Breatherable

He's under the stage lights and wearing a blazer.

  • Is that Kevin Bacon or the Bacon brothers??

  • Rick was one of the best, you got to please yourself. love you rick.

  • The American Idol who had The number one single on The Billboard Pop Charts when Madonna was born; She was 14 when this was released. Where did the time go?

  • Im a liberal and I love rick nelson.

  • How many artists would get booed off stage because he didn't play his old music and then leave and write a song about what happened record it and use that to jump start his career again...only a true talent like Ricky Nelson. For all you liberals who can't resist posting rude comments may I suggest that you keep all those negative vibs to yourself.

  • @nourbutwatmi it ain't about lib'rulz. I am a leftist radical and this is the best music that exists and the truest words. Keep your Eric "kill the poor" Cantor politics out of it.

  • @scottmalec I've never met a socialist who could handle the truth...so screw you and the horse you rode in on.

  • @nourbutwatmi You have had too much sex with your mother. My apologies for confirming everything that you already knew about yourself.

  • @scottmalec I would expect nothing more from a socialist dip wad with shit for brains.

  • @nourbutwatmi I would expect nothing less from an impoverished twat who thought that he was John Galt himself.

  • @scottmalec It's a shame that socialists fail to realize what a complete ass they make of themselves when they attempt to be witty...and you're obviously staying true to the tradition.

  • This would be about 4 month b4 his tragic death.

  • @LAWAGO I saw Ricky at the Crazy Horse in Santa Ana about a week before he died.Hell of a showman. He did all of his old songs & some new ones that he was going to release. He was one of the most comfortable people on stage. You felt like you were all family in his presence. I was and am a big fan.

  • W raz z jego śmiercią,światowa muzyka poniosła wielką stratę.

  • music sucks

  • @reload95 ARE YOU SAYING THAT THIS MUSIC SUCKS?!

  • @reload95 YouTube's music critic :)

  • my theme song!! f*cking A!!

  • He died too young. A true American.

  • BAD WIG

  • @walksfargently That's not a wig. Just very thick hair

  • You certainly cannot please everyone, so you "got" to please yourself!

  • he came to the Del Mar fair a couple of years before his death. GREAT SHOW>

I got his autograph just as he was leaving

  • GReat Artist

  • This song says it all, so true, god bless Ricky for this, an artist for all time,,RWB

  • YES The HEART is ALWAYS TRUE!

  • legend , what else

  • Nagyon jó countri stílusú!!!

  • My cousin and I use to play house when we were little one of us would pretend we were married to Ricky and one to Elvis. Those were the days.

  • This song has a sad beauty to it..It's strange how so many brilliant singers have died at young ages..John Lennon, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Karen Carpenter, Rick Nelson, Bob Marley, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Freddie Mercury and Jimi Hendrix...I could say they were here for a reason and they left when they did what they were supposed to do..I could also say that they made bad choices which led to their deaths..Whatever the reason or reasons, they're no longer, but their brilliant music lives on.

  • @pagalley1 they didn't make ANY choices the way they died you didiot

  • @penny539 I must rebuke you for your shameless assignation of Pagalley who made a genuine and emotional gesture of appreciation. Even though I'm British (So that I must allow for your American lack of intellect/culture) I can see where Pagalley is coming from. Indeed, You no longer feel the the boundaries of the song, you cannot remember how it is composed and what its name is. How bizarre, how bizarre. From my 'gallery'....you are the IDIOT and Pagalley is simply....nice.

  • @brism32 I gave Ricky Nelson his first and last blowjob!

  • @KarenEngSwallows That must have been quite an honour for him. Bet he had tons of others in between though.

  • @KarenEngSwallows ... Perhaps you are the real Mary-Lou and what you did for him inspired his 'I've got a feeling', after which he felt a 'Poor Little Fool' and went on top become a 'Travellin' man', finally returning to attend a 'Garden Party' before realising it was way past his bedtime and saying 'It's Late'.....I've gotta get on home....and there you were waiting for him again. Yep; kind of adds up now

  • @KarenEngSwallows

Why tarnish his memory with such trashy information?

  • @KarenEngSwallows THERE IS NO NEED FOR THESE KIND OF COMMENTS.

  • @KarenEngSwallows You must be the brightest person in your own mind for such a heartfelt comment....Your life must be such a blur of excitement, it's surprising you found so much spare time to sit & think of such a marvellous comment to share with us all.

  • @pagalley1

Don't forget about one of my favorites, Jim Croce. Poetry put to music. The one-time Malvern Prep and Villanova

    classico, died way too young.

  • @64TR4 Never heard of him, but I'll check out some of his music...Thanks.

  • I was truly blessed to meet David and Ricky on the set of "Ozzie and Harriet." I was 12 years old and thanks to Ricky's fan club president, Connie Mueller, who was also Ozzie's assistant, I was able to interview the two brothers for my elementary school paper. I saw Ricky later--when he recorded his 'live' album at The Troubador in Hollywood around '70 or so. He was an original. I was managing The Beach Boys at the time & I've been blessed to have known & worked with many of my heroes.

  • @thevoiceoftheBBs -- Have you written a book about some of the people you've known and worked with? If you have, how do I find it? If you haven't, I wish you'd consider doing it -- then come to Dallas so I can get you to sign a copy for me :)

Those younger than 50 might not relate to your stories, but there are a lot of us music-loving boomers out here who'd like to know more about the musicians who inspired us back in the day (and still do).

  • 3:33 video: "Garden Party" is a 1972 hit song for Rick Nelson (May 8, 1940 – December 31, 1985) and the Stone Canyon Band from the album Garden Party. Video from concert in August of 1985.

  • Words to live by, because you CAN'T please everyone and life's too short to waste trying to. Thanks, Rick...

  • So sad ,miss the show and his family and his cool music too !! I cried my eyes out when I heard about his death that day.

  • Did the musicians in this video die in the crash too ?

  • One of the most handsome performers to come out of the states. His singing needs no comment - just so perfect, especially the slow numbers. Sadly missed by many of us.

  • frormer teen sensation finds the soul of music , great true story

  • RICKY NELSON WAS ONE OF THE BEST!!!!!!mikedcannon v.n.vet 69-71

  • @mikedcannon 100% with you... He was one of the best in these years!! Thanks,

  • @mikedcannon I'm 100% with you... He was one I loved for his very beautifull songs...

  • @mikedcannon He OD'd didn't he?

  • @rrbond07 he was free basing cocaine when his plane caught fire and crashed

  • @hotmn4u thats not funny or true.

  • @hotmn4u -This is not what happened. The old plane's heater simply malfunctioned, causing the plane fire. When the plane crash first ocurred that was the rumor. When the truth came out, the information was not as widely publicized as the false rumor. That is not to say that Rick did not do drugs. He still looked good at 45, although his hair had long since turned grey. BTW he and I share the same birthday, May 8.

  • @COOLROCKINDAD, IS A COMPLETE CHICKENSHIT, HOPE YOUR COMMENT TO HIM IS NOT BLOCKED , LIKE HE BLOCKED MINE!! HURT HIS FEELINGS I GUESS! ALL HE HAS WAITING FOR HIM IS A HOLE IN THE GROUND, WITH NO COMMENTS!! mikedcannon

  • He was wonderful...still miss him. And, his family, as well.

  • We truley lost a great singer!!! Very sad.

  • Thanks for putting this up. I always liked this song, and this is a good performance. It inspired my cover, and I'm extra grateful for that. :)

  • I just learned that Ricky Nelson wasn't a father to his child, Eric Jude Crewe. I thought it was raised better than that. A paternity test proved he was the father back then but he had nothing to do with this child. How sad! I am heartbroken.

  • FANTASTIC SING.

    THE NELSON FAMILY ARE MISSED

    WISH YOU WERE HERE

  • If it weren't for Mr. Rick Nelson, I would have NEVER gone into the music biz. He was the first inspiration for me to that even before Elvis or Beatles influenced me. I'm 56 now and still produce but he will always have a place in my mind and as simple as his songs were made it all the easier to understand there is Genius in simplicity.

  • I HOPE ALL THE SCUMBAGS IN m.s.g. AT HIS SHOW THAT NIGHT, FEEL REAL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES!!!!! n.y.c. SUCKS, THEY WON'T EVEN STAND UP AND DEFEND VISITORS, THAT COME TO DO SOMETHING FOR THEM!!! mikedcannon v.n. vet 69-71scty gd. co. 13th cav [for those in the know]LOV YA RICKY!!!

  • @mikedcannon I was at this show and as much as I like Ricky Nelson ... he was wrong. If I want to hear "Honky Tonk Woman" then I'll go to see the Stones. If he didn't want to sing just his hits then he should have had so new tunes. As in tunes he's recorded recently. Rickies voice is just to smooth for a Stones tune anyway. The show was billed as a so called Oldies Show.

Since you were not at that show you have no idea what you're talking about, so right back at you scumbag and my I add FU!

  • I HOPE ALL THE SCUMBAGS IN m.s.g. AT HIS SHOW THAT NIGHT, FEEL REAL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES!!!!! n.y.c. SUCKS, THEY WON'T EVEN STAND UP AND DEFEND VISITORS, THAT COME TO DO SOMETHING FOR THEM!!! mikedcannon v.n. vet 69-71scty gd. co. 13th cav [for those in the know]
