hey man! sorry! i didn't get an email notification on ur reply.
do something which i should've done, but never did. work with the metronome! it's the most important thing, and i screwed my foundation up by not practicing scales to a metronome. slow tempo, like 60 to 70... some people even do 50.
then, listen to different bassists... i loved flea, jaco, billy sheehan, victor wooten. lol, i've never been able to do even 15% of what these guys do, but at least i got plenty of ideas.
Hey man, tabs and notes are different... I would say learn notes, but both are equally important, because you may have to share tabs with other members of the band, or create tabs, if they can't read notes. Learn how to make simple chord charts too... these 3 things are crucial - chord charts, tabs, and notation. =)
@lucidmist Those "band members" of which you are talking about, have to know how to read notes and further than that - be able to understand what to play by ear or eyes. Tabs are for the short term.
@nirvanafrik yup, that's why i said learn all, notes, tabs and chord charts. i didn't talk about ears or eyes because halfjaw was asking directly about notes or tabs... i didn't want to assume what he already knew or didn't know. besides, for all i know, he may know tons more than i do, about music!
I liked it!

That's awesome! I started playing this month, actually. What do you suggest I do first as a self-teaching bassist?

Haha alright thanks man, good advice. I'm planning to learn traditional bass guitar notes instead of tabs. or is learning tabs about the same?
