That stage reminds me of Gradius 2. I've seen that when I was playing that. Okay maybe it's just a copycat Konami made even Gradius is close to the same game.
The whole gradius series had a huge problem. Every time you die, you lose so much that you may as well just hit the reset button. You lose all your speedups and powerups, which in mid-stage makes it virtually impossible to heave your slow-ass ship around, dodging every projectile and enemy while having to go into the line of fire to kill these enemies, while simultaneously lugging your slow ass over to the powerups to get them. So basically, you either beat the game on one life or you're fucked.
i love how i cant just find the damned thing, everyone has to put their pet favorite "console" into it. when i was actually playing this on an actual arcade videogame, do you think i cared what manufacturer created the box that housed it?
@MikeRoePhonicsMusic Yeah, they should make a 3D LifeForce game to give true gamers a break from FPS (not that they don't enjoy FPS, but there are too many of them). I think it would be awesome
Awesome game.. Use to be one of my favorites, Along with Metal Gear, Contra, Jackel, Top Gun, and so on.... Use to beat this one everytime i'd play, Along with Contra... the 30 men cheat is the same for Life Force and Contra... Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B, A, Start.
I'm playing this right now to help me get past this ban on fireworks on 7-4-11 due to the drought in Texas which I hope won't happen again on New Years or 7-4-12.
Such an amazing game, I remember vividly how me and my older brother played this in co-op mode back in the days. It's one of those games you never forget, and the music haunts my head to this day. I wonder how many hours we spent trying to beat this game...
It seems as if "Starfox 64" and possibly it's SNES predecessor borrowed a page or two from this game, namely the Brain boss and the fire level with leaping flames and meteors and... birds(?)

@111random with the "power of the force" If you get hit by the little blue things the enemies shoot @ u, u don't die right away. He forgot to mention that the Konami code for 30 extra lives is usable on this game
I hope that Mark will review Salamander for the Sega Saturn someday. I really like his reviews of space shooters, both of the horizontal and vertical variety, as well as those that mix them, like Life Force and Axelay. Oh, and an Axelay review would be rad, too :)
just want to make sure of something, did they recreate this game because it looks/seems similar to a gameboy advance game that i have (i can't remember name and i'm not sure where it is)
lol...the 5th level is where u need all the power ups that u just lose or else it will be a though job...try to read some pattern when passing the 'bone-like-shooting' just like u read the pattern of the flame thrower at the 3rd level...trust me level 6 which is the last stage will need u to have 'speed' power ups... :)
I'm a fan of Gradius Interstellar Assault by Konami for Gameboy,; NES Gradius doesn't do it for me. Your review is showing me I've found another Konami shooter from way back that is doing it for me.
Man the childhood memories... Aww man fell in love with shmups playing this game. I can honestly say this was my first. Oddly enough I had this game before I had Gradius for the nes.

@s1ider well technically gradius>life force because 1.gradius (and contra) were the first games to use the konami code. 2. because without gradius it is unlikely that salamander/life force would ever be created due to the fact that salamander/life force is a spin off of gradius and nemesis is also a spin off of gradius
@BillyCauseyjr rcr? all i know is that gradius is the main series, salamander and nemesis are spin-offs along with otomedius and there is a parody series called parodius. I'm so terrible at this game. I own it and for some reason it is rare for me to even get to level 3. Silver Surfer, np, this game ouch. Great music though.
I shit you not, when he entered the fire level, I said out loud "Oh fuck this level" and then Mark immediately said, "This level is the bane of my existence" so it's good to see that we're on the same page here.
NEOGEO is a 4th generation system which BLOWS SNES and GENESIS OUT OF THE WATER! granted, it was never intended to actually compete with the snes. I also thought that the Genesis had a more powerful CPU than SNES.
Oh okay. Well then you proved the point I was making - The best-selling console is NOT the most-powerful concole.
BTW the neogeo's flaw was the same flaw as the $600 PS3. Too expensive for people to afford, so they bought cheaper options.
As for Genesis/Megadrive, it did have a 32-bit 68000 versus SNES' 16-bit 65000, but Genesis used weaker in graphics and sound chips, and it didn't have the ability to do a 3D game like Starfox.
The SNES cannot sun Starfox alone. Starfox has a graphics (super FX) chip in the cart. This was used on a few games, and most of them (such as Starfox) have terrible frame rate (so SNES still can't hack it). This was done on the Genesis with virtua racing, using the SVP, but the framerate was good. All in all, SVP was too expensive to put in carts, I think that's why they made the 32X, which FAILED on the market.
The PS1's CDs meant monumentally increased storage space, so some debatable visuals and longer loading times were a worthy tradeoff. Besides, the Dreamcast's loading times were much worse than those of the PS1. They get laughable for some games.
When it gets translated to english its understood as salamander. But if we go by that logic then everyone is saying thunder force wrong. It should be Sandaa Forusu.
That's japanese, it was brought to america and translated, we don't speak japanese, we speak english, so the company translates it so titles make more sense to us, or are easier to say.
Stage 3 was my favorite level..I had this game a long time ago then lost it..Then the Nintendo wii came out..I downloaded this game to it..I be glad when chrono trigger comes to the wii as well..I'm ready to download that game ASAP.
This game was fantastic when i was little! Good graphics for its times, exceptional music... The stage 2 music has haunted me all my life but I didn't remember the game. Thanks to this, I now know!
This game was VASTLY superior to any Gradius, before or after. they were in all the right places with the sound track, the two player and the verticle & horizontal scrolling. I remember being excited getting Gradius III for SNES and was so siappointed in the soundtrack and lack of team playing. The soundtrack hurt my ears, actually.
I love how organic this game is; It's got your usual shoot-'em-up action and your power-ups and such, but it's got a very "alive" look that games such as Gradius and R-Type lacked.
R-Type games actually have plenty of organically-themed levels, mate, but if you're interested in playing a game that focuses solely on biological stages, check out X-Multiply, which is also by Irem. It's one of my favourites, and should be right up your alley!
I recognized this game but I'd never played Lifeforce on Nes... then I realized, it was released on C64 as Salamander like Mark said. Ooohhhh, THAT GAME. Yes, it was cool. XD
This game actually predates Innerspace by a couple years. There was a game for Sega CD called Microcosm that was directly inspired by Innerspace. The FMV sequences were some of the cheesiest ever. Microcosm did have g0od music, though.
Remember when AVGN played this one with the POWER GLOVE XD.This game is excellent, took me a lot to beat it,but I'm good as crap in 8-bit games,to be honest.Matter of luck and patience XD
I owned Life Force and Gradius..I played both of them endlessly when I was a kid..Love the Old Skool NES..Need Konamai to make Gradius 6!!! in 2D sidescrolling with 3D background like Gradius 5..3D games suck nowadays..great reviews!! Brings back memories playing these games coming home from school :)
OMG I do remember this game from my youth. The gameplay is excellent, but the end was so-so; your reward was a mere advertisement of the Konami logo. The characters and levels were made from scratch, which made the game more enjoyable. Too bad the ending wasn't worth it. "Licensed by Nintend". LOL "All the first boss wants is a hug?" HUH???

It's a pretty well known fact (among game collectors) that the best-selling console is NOT the most-powerful console:
ATARI - not as good as intellivision
NES - not as powerful as SMS or Atari7800
SNES - well, there's always an exception to every rule ;-)
PS1 - not as powerful or "clean" as N64 graphics
PS2 - not as powerful as the Xbox or Cube
Wii - not as powerful as X360 or PS3

NEOGEO is a 4th generation system which BLOWS SNES and GENESIS OUT OF THE WATER! granted, it was never intended to actually compete with the snes. I also thought that the Genesis had a more powerful CPU than SNES.

Not more powerful, just slightly faster. Of course, they kept saying that this tiny speed difference made them superior.

Oh okay. Well then you proved the point I was making - The best-selling console is NOT the most-powerful concole.
BTW the neogeo's flaw was the same flaw as the $600 PS3. Too expensive for people to afford, so they bought cheaper options.
As for Genesis/Megadrive, it did have a 32-bit 68000 versus SNES' 16-bit 65000, but Genesis used weaker in graphics and sound chips, and it didn't have the ability to do a 3D game like Starfox.
harleykman 2 years ago

It's pronounced GRAH-DEE-US!!! So tired of that!
And Kiman2, it's called sa-RA-man-da in Japan. No L's.
ghaleon64 2 years ago
When it gets translated to english its understood as salamander. But if we go by that logic then everyone is saying thunder force wrong. It should be Sandaa Forusu.
genocyde83 2 years ago
That's japanese, it was brought to america and translated, we don't speak japanese, we speak english, so the company translates it so titles make more sense to us, or are easier to say.

whats the difference between this and LF:Salamander?
RobMetalCheese 2 years ago
same game. LF's name in Japan is called sa-la-man-da (salamander).

A great game, then and now.
I love how organic this game is; It's got your usual shoot-'em-up action and your power-ups and such, but it's got a very "alive" look that games such as Gradius and R-Type lacked.
Think Contra, only with a spaceship. ^.^

R-Type games actually have plenty of organically-themed levels, mate, but if you're interested in playing a game that focuses solely on biological stages, check out X-Multiply, which is also by Irem. It's one of my favourites, and should be right up your alley!

This game is also available now as a Wii-ware download. One of the best for download on the Wii, for sure.

Looks pretty good for a NES game, but Super Mario Bros>this.

This game actually predates Innerspace by a couple years. There was a game for Sega CD called Microcosm that was directly inspired by Innerspace. The FMV sequences were some of the cheesiest ever. Microcosm did have g0od music, though.

I BEAT THIS GAME!!! IT'S SO DAMN AWESOME!!!
I CAN GET 29 on this UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT, A,B, AND A,B

OMG I do remember this game from my youth. The gameplay is excellent, but the end was so-so; your reward was a mere advertisement of the Konami logo. The characters and levels were made from scratch, which made the game more enjoyable. Too bad the ending wasn't worth it. "Licensed by Nintend". LOL "All the first boss wants is a hug?" HUH???
lordbemylight 3 years ago
The Japan version had a series of "Samus-takes-her-helmet-off" style endings for better play. Not exactly original, but it added replay value.

Isn't Salamander the Japanese name for Gradius?
ivanvalerian 3 years ago
No, Gradius is Gradius there.
Salamander was often the Japanese name of Life Force, although this wasn't a convention they adhered to for every version.
