I worked on military ships as an electrician/tacker for a year (laidoff).
Torch fumes are horrific in enclosed spaces, it's chokes you, and you feel like your lungs are burning. Any kind of welding or torching on painted walls produces fumes that make your eyes water, and clog up your nose and lungs.
I can't imagine the hell those people must go through in their job. I wish there was something I could do about it.
@Lucid91 are you kidding me? You arrogant piece of shit. While you're probably drinking a smoothie in your air conditioned house that you mom pays for, these people ( most just age 10-17 ) are working 12 hours a day in deadly conditions doing jobs that shorten there life spans by decades with no breaks or slacking off and only getting paid BARELY just enough to feed their selves and their family and continue to live in a run down shack. And I'm running out of characters so I'm sending you a PM.
If you have the millions of dollars necessary to improve this process yourself, or an idea on how to better the working conditions yourself, please, they're all ears down there.
It is good to bring more attention to wrongs like this and for this reason this is a good video, but I still voted it down for the G20 rant at the end. The G20 are not the only entities using and decomissioning ships and not all (hopefully not even a majority) of them use Bangaldeshi slaves. The responsibility lies with the Bangladeshi government and the entire international community, not just with the G20.
AMEN. If it weren't for Unions, we in the U.S.A. would be working under terrible conditions and pay as well. Not that we don't have serious economic problems here.
What they do to live is sobering indeed. Economy of the world works that way. The poorest work very hard for little. If the world stopped sending them ships to break, perhaps they might not be able to feed their families at all. Which would be worse?...not sure. If the alternative is no work at all, many will continue to break ships. Too many willing (starving) workers. What alternative can the rest of the world offer? Sad that they don't have even basic safety gear, shoes, hardhat etc.

just shows how diffren,t western world is but we can,t change the east we just have 2 accept it or we could worry about it spend our lives trying to change what is or carry on with our own lives and take advantage of our freedoms
@gtirboy1 BUT "taking advantage of our freedoms" gives us the freedom TO CHANGE the world. Without trying to do so, you are greedily exploiting your "freedoms" while others suffer, and that makes you a usurper of freedom. Come on, we can do it. WE can change the world. One love all~!
I've grown up very close to this ship breaking yard. Its just a death trap. I totally support the argument of this presenter. But wht will happen? nothing. Bcs the main problem for Bangladesh, its corrupted government. Most of local member of parliament are some how related to the ship breaking business, bcs its a mine for easy money. So they are busy to make their fortune from it. the Govt. ll not do nything, unless ILO put pressure on them. all the member of parliament are just bunch of B**
so many oranganizations could find common ground and rally around this and other realities around the globe. human rights, environmentalists, labor organizations, safety and health groups, child exploitation groups, green groups, churches and on and on--- someone needs to bring these groups together to get the word out- i guess it starts here, pass it on
What the fuck..wow thanks for making me aware. I have never heard of this. This is slavery. Who ever posted this very good job . This should be looked into..
This is a good "To the Point" video about a subject most people have never thought about. It is neither a liberal or conservative , but a fair assessment of the horrors in the far east breaking yards. Like the man says, it has more to do with greed and UN corruption that allows this kind of thing to go on. It's just one more reason why we should be sceptical of the UN and it's organisations that claim to champion labor rights, but all too often do nothing in the face of wreckless greed.
@cbau338, are you serious??? it's our money that creates and sustains such exploitation! i guess, after fully breaking these people down, we can then go in to save their souls and convert them to christianity as that also only exploits misery in these parts of the world!
Have you identified which shipping companies are sending ships here? Public shaming would probably be quite effective in ending this practice if the companies operate anywhere there is a decent internet penetration. If these ships stop coming, then what other occupations might these people pursue? Fishing? While these conditions are awful, these men have to feed their families somehow. You can't take away their livelihood without a superior replacement. A life of farming may be better than this.
this is exactly what you get for supporting the rich elitist pukes of the world ... who produce absolutely nothing and they're are truly the CONSUMERS of the world, not we the people ... Wake the fuck
