Is it safety reasons, money reason for which rides kids and adults are choosing that year(s), or a market thing because some rides get replaced my whatever movies gross by the millions those years. Random questions I know. To me speed isn't always the factor it's the design of the roller coaster. Basically the thrill. The Goliath was pretty good.
Its a shame.. because Even though this coaster is much older.. its still way better than the piece of crap they're just finishing putting in now to replace it-- the green lantern. WEAK!! Its not even a new coaster.. its a coaster from another park that was dismantled, renamed and repainted for the NJ six flags. The new coaster does ABSOLUTLEY nothing spectacular.

I am SERIOUSLY going to miss this ride! The Great American Scream Machine was THE coaster my friends and I would hit up several times every time we'd go to Great Adventure, and to this day, will always be my favorite.
It was the coaster I got over my fear of roller coasters on, so it holds a special place in my heart. It broke my heart to hear about it being torn down and dang, I was upset about not being able to get one of the last rides on the last day. We did get to ride that week, though.
while im sad its gone it kinda needed to happen. the ride started to get weaker and more painful to ride. I think the new coaster will be pretty cool though

@sixflgs15 well, i did some reasearch, and the shockwave you are referring to was part of a program where rides were transferred every few years to a new park. the shockwave actually opened in'86 in magic mtn. it was moved to great adventure in '90, and then to astroworld in '93. it was renamed batman the escape there. when that park closed in '05 it was moved to storage in darien lake (my local park) . in 06 the parc was sold to PARC management, which now owns the stored coaster
@sixflgs15 sorry , i ran out of characters, but you are very right about six flags good rides being taken down or breaking. as a person who goes to a former six flags park, none of the rides six flags installed work. there a great inamin hypercoaster that breaks down daily, a very unreliable vekoma boomerang, and a woodie that was neglected to the point where it is unrideable. however, an older arrow coaster there has worked fine and it is almost 30 years old , not 10 like the six flag stuff
I rode this in July1995...This was a record holder in 1989. Rough ride....Twice was enough for me! Sad that it's closing. Wonder what they're doing w/ it.
Six Flags Great Adventure closed this ride down on July 18, 2010 and began dismantling it. It will be replaced likely by Chang in 2011. Chang is stored in Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom where it was permanently closed.

@lollol322 When I went (last year.), the lines were terrible. 2-3 hour waits! but not all of them are accurate. It depends on the day and time you go.
And to those who say to lean foward, I actually didn't get hurt at all by leaning back, locking my arms, and puffing out my chest to press firmly against the shoulder guard. But it won't matter in 3 days anyway.... RIP GASM!
In case noone knew yet, they wanted to keep the ride even though lines are small, the ride constantly has riders and therefore is considered a popular ride. But since the company that made it, Arrow Dynamics, is defunct since I believe the late 90's, the upkeep of spare parts is to costly for six flags to keep it. If that wasn't an issue, they'd probably put Chang in the vacant lot by the Dark Knight. RIP GASM!

I never understood why everyone complains about this ride. Just lean forward, and it doesn't hurt at all. I can't believe this is going :/ i went on the 17th of June as a school trip, and we rode this 3 times, great memories on this amazing coaster. R.I.P Scream Machine

B&M stand ups are so much better than the ones made by Togo (the company that made Shockwave). Chang is basically a clone of Mantis, which is a great ride. I'd expect them to keep it for a while.

It takes forever to get to the top but it's worth the wait. I loved this coaster. It had the shortest lines ever

this is the first coaster i ever went on i went on it when i was 10 and it doesnt make ur neck hurt at all at least not mine and after going on batman kingda ka rolling thunder and el toro this is still my favorite to bad its shutting down :(

Actually it is officially announced that is is closing tomorrow the 18th. I don't think it has been released what is going to be replacing it.

@lollol322 When I went (last year.), the lines were terrible. 2-3 hour waits! but not all of them are accurate. It depends on the day and time you go.

And to those who say to lean foward, I actually didn't get hurt at all by leaning back, locking my arms, and puffing out my chest to press firmly against the shoulder guard. But it won't matter in 3 days anyway.... RIP GASM!

In case noone knew yet, they wanted to keep the ride even though lines are small, the ride constantly has riders and therefore is considered a popular ride. But since the company that made it, Arrow Dynamics, is defunct since I believe the late 90's, the upkeep of spare parts is to costly for six flags to keep it. If that wasn't an issue, they'd probably put Chang in the vacant lot by the Dark Knight. RIP GASM!

I never understood why everyone complains about this ride. Just lean forward, and it doesn't hurt at all. I can't believe this is going :/ i went on the 17th of June as a school trip, and we rode this 3 times, great memories on this amazing coaster. R.I.P Scream Machine

B&M stand ups are so much better than the ones made by Togo (the company that made Shockwave). Chang is basically a clone of Mantis, which is a great ride. I'd expect them to keep it for a while.

Oops, I was thinking of the Shockwave at Kings Dominion. But Chang is an overall better ride than the Shockwave they had here in 1990.

@sixflgs15 Oh no, I'm just sayin the lift hill today would've been a bit steeper than the long climb it is now. But I too wished SFGAdv kept it than to take it down. I think if they wanted to bring Chang to the park, they could've put that in the 'batman' side of the park and retheme it to Joker's jinx or riddler's revenge.

A tip to avoid pain: lean forward in the seat. It was fine when I rode it like that. Don't lean back in the seat.
