Satriani and Stevens are such a bunch of thugs. They want to use the club of 'intellectual property' to smash the heads of as many musicians as they can for money.

What about Michael Gregory, Creaky Boards, and Cat Stevens? This is a great compilation, and although I think there are similarities (particularly with the satch-cp example), I think several of these songs stand on their own and are influenced by those before them. There's a fine line that cp may have crossed, but funny thing is I purchased 4 of these songs after looking into the controversy, so go figure!
In comparison to the last few songs. Enanitos Verdes, different chord progressoin and feel, they also use a few embellishments that are pretty cool. With Gunther, that vocal line, though similar, doesn't share the same consistency or the same resolution as satriani or the dynamic changes; plus, it's sporadic. With alizee, same key, but the melody is no way similar to satch's and I don't even know if Alizee wrote the song.
With Marty Balin's piece, different feel, tempo, similar melodic line that interchanges between vocals and guitar and to be honest, it was more similar to Alizee's song than Satch's. And with that prodigy, if the kid is that good, for his age, I think satch and coldplay would hand over all exclusive rights to that baby. BOTTOM LINE IS, Coldplay and Satch both put forth a song that were so similar in chord progression, melodic lines, key and time signatures that this whole lawsuit followed.
Copying someone's song is considered a compliment! Would you copy a song that sucks? Hell no! They did this constantly in the baroque and classical era! If it were me, I would just give credit where it's due and move on. This isn't gonna stop Satch or his godly reputation. i am concerned about coldplay though. Okay.... I'll shut up now.
@cheech6g Viva La Vida is at a slightly faster tempo and it's in a different key. The melodic line is SOMEWHAT similar, but not similar enough, in my opinion, to call for a law suit. The chord progression is a generic IV-V-I-VI chord progression. There's only so many possibilities for a chord progression. Finally, as for the time signature, it's in 4/4. Damn near everyone uses it, so I really doubt that was taken into consideration.

The fact of the matter is if every time a song was written it had to be compared to every other song that has been written you could probably count on one had the things that sounded COMPLETELY UNIQUE. The song Hearts sounds nothing like any of the others. The Alizee comparison seems a little off but I was surprised to hear the riff in Gunthers nonsense.
Coldplays music is awesome no doubt but, this is the second song Coldplay has been accused of copying. After observing both songs, I have come to the conclusion that yes they copy music, but, when they do, it's 100% times better.

The strumming style is close in the songs here (popular style), tho Satriani played the melody w/single notes-as2sing w/his gtr-notes, melody & rhythm were all stolen by coldplay. Song by Verdes has3or maybe 4same notes in its chorus, tho its doubtful joe took that & based his song on it. possible yes, but if so, that is 3 or 4 notes vs. the complete rip off ala coldplay.

Any sensible musician will say that it is exaggerated. The resemblance is surprising but the coincidence is far from being improbable. I am guitarist and several years ago I composed a theme of 9 notes completely similar to a phrasing from the piano concerto #3 of Rachmaninov. I had still never listened to this artist before! By chance, I 'm not so famous than Coldplay, I believe that one would judge me systematically!

Ok, the first two songs (Coldplay and Satriani) are very similar, not only do they share and extreme similarity between the melody, but also the harmony is pretty much the same, and so is the tempo and meter. The third song is ONLY similar to Satriani's in that ONE measure where the rhythm and note intervals match up, but after that, the melodies are very different, not to mention that the harmony in both songs are completely different. All the other songs do not sound anything like the first 3.

Many of these songs are similar strictly because of likeness in melody: The first note being the leading tone, going up a half step to resolve, then dropping a whole step. Others are similar strictly because of their progression: especially the last two chords in the progression being a 3 to 1 relationship. This is a perfect example of the derivative nature of modern popular music.

Very well put mrfrosty1988. We totally agree. coldplay quickly settles "out of court" b4 word gets2 bigger papers& channels. The strumming style is close in the songs here (popular style), tho Satriani played the melody w/single notes-as2sing w/his gtr-notes, melody & rhythm were all stolen by coldplay. Song by Verdes has3or maybe 4same notes in its chorus, tho its doubtful joe took that & based his song on it. possible yes, but if so, that is 3 or 4 notes vs. the complete rip off ala coldplay.

talking of fading out. u dont know a thing about Joe and what hes done through decades. hes made about 300 songs. almost every one of them are good or excellent. coldplay will never match that even if they live for 200 years. Satrianis music will live 4 eternity.
few,if any guitarist can compare with Joe what comes to variation in both solos and genre. Joe plays jazz,funk,reagge,flamenco,turkish,rock,blues,ballads,fusion,folkmusic an so on. can hardly think of any with that range.

I am guitarist and several years ago I composed a theme of 9 notes completely similar to a phrasing from the piano concerto #3 of Rachmaninov. I had still never listened to this artist before! By chance, I 'm not so famous than Coldplay, I believe that one would judge me systematically!

Ok, the first two songs (Coldplay and Satriani) are very similar, not only do they share and extreme similarity between the melody, but also the harmony is pretty much the same, and so is the tempo and meter. The third song is ONLY similar to Satriani's in that ONE measure where the rhythm and note intervals match up, but after that, the melodies are very different, not to mention that the harmony in both songs are completely different. All the other songs do not sound anything like the first 3.

The difference between Coldplay copying Joe and Joe seemingly copying Emanitos is that Joe Satriani is a Rock God, I rate him as highly as Hendrix.
cold play are still developing, they can't expect to take a riff that Joe "borrowed" and shaped from Emanitos and expect not even a little shit come their way. Coldplay aren't great enough to stand toe to toe with a God like Joe, while Joe can more than do so to Emanitos. nothing against Emanitos, it's just that Joe has revolutionized Music.

I enjoy great music too. Music with meaning and direction. Not just faggy guitar tricks by some aging bald queer who wears his sunglasses at night. Try Jose Gonzalez or Andy Mckee. Van Halen is a perfect example of a guy who combines good technique, with good music. Unlike that hack Satch. These songs are definitely akin. Many of these songs are similar strictly because of likeness in melody: The first note being the leading tone, going up a half step to resolve, then dropping a whole step. Others are similar strictly because of their progression: especially the last two chords in the progression being a 3 to 1 relationship. This is a perfect example of the derivative nature of modern popular music.
