When you look closer at the replay and try to get into the skates of Jeff Carter though, you can see that he's lining him up once he sees Salmela is going to be able to beat the defender. He gets him as much of the shoulder as he's going to get and his arm comes up after on the follow-through.

The replays were shown in slow motion. You realize this, correct? The reason I say unavoidable is Carter had no time to even try to stop before he hit the guy. Watch the hit in real time. He hit him almost immediately after the shot.

There really is nothing that Carter could've done better. He can't be going "well this guy might shoot it soon, I better not hit him." He has to be focused on defense. He was.

The issue with this was not about whether it was a clean hit or not. It has to do with the fact that it was a blindsided hit. It's one thing to be crossing the blueline with a Dman in front of you and he lays you out cuz you were staring at the puck. Salmela had no way of knowing Carter was even coming because Carter more or less came from behind him. The well being of the players is top priority.

Carter didnt need to hit him after he fired the puck, and he didnt need to go in full speed (charging) either. but because he doesnt have a huge record for suspensions, he will only get a few.

The hit was shoulder to shoulder, but the impact went through Salmela's shoulder and because he was angled low, combined with him being smaller than Carter, Carter's shoulder went though Salmela's and made some head contact. Anyone with a shred of sense knows it was a clean hit.

Carter was using his body to remove Salmela from the front of the net with a clean shoulder to shoulder hit. Period. There's nothing else that needs to be said because that's all there is to it.
