The lyrics of "Mona Lisa" are pretty inane ... but as sung by Cole, the results are marvelous. Much of opera libretti are at best forgettable - but when sung by Pavarotti, who cares? When Ella sings scat, it's incomprehensible - but so what? When Streisand, Sinatra and Torme ("Cement Mixer???) sing, they elevate lyrics and song to a new level.

Nat "King" Cole: one of the truly great performers who pass "the phone book test." - they could sing the phone book and it would be great.
