I was recently homeless in los angeles...i was also born and raised there...and i had the unfortunate luck of being placed in one of these shelters with my children.while u people are saying to not feel sorry for these ppl i feel sorry for u.i hope u never have to live in a shelter.the shelter they sent me to was very filthy they give 25 min to stand in line and feed urself and ur family its really agravating to live like this. and everyday they put u out at 7 in the morning no matter what!

If I am reading the comments correctly, I don't think people are saying to not feel sorry for "these people" as in all homeless people, but for a lot of them. I think we all know that some people are homeless and struggle to make things better- however a lot of them remain homeless and high and do not want to change, at least that's what I inturpet the comments as. Homeless people in LA choose to live on the streets instead of taking advantage of the services the missions have to offer. Many homeless people rather use drugs then to sleep in a mission at night. Missions have rules that homeless people don't like to obey. So don't feel too bad for these homeless people.
Yes there are missions that help the homeless and we are grateful for that. Yes there are drugs users who roam the streets homeless. Yes there are some who prefer the streets rather than what the missions have to offer. For of the majority of these people its not because they don't want to abide by the rules of these missions, rather, its because of their mental illness. There are many who are homeless because of their mental health issues. They cannot function in certain environments.
Don't feel bad for these homeless people? Thats quite a statement! We should be concerned about anyone who is homeless, whether they use drugs, or have mental health issues! I have worked with the homeless and have seen whole families without food or shelter who have neither a drug problem or mental health issues. I have transported these people to Churches and Missions, I have seen the painful look on a hungry childs face and the lost look on one who has mental health issues.
Very sad. I work in the homeless sector in London, and I just can't understand why there isn't the will to provide adequate social support, medication and accommodation for the most vulnerable in LA. These people need stability in order to be safe and support to have choices: to lead the kind of life they have reason to value. In other words, freedom. The same for those in the trap of addiction. These people are rotting because the society they live in has chosen not to care. I pray for LA.

Just think of the millions of dollars that are spent each year on useless gifts, it would be of a much greater service to them!
