okay i have a problem. i love riding and i just started riding this really sensative horse. I ride english, and the horse is menat to be steered with the legs. whenever im in a trot, i tell the horse to go to the outside by pushing in with my inside leg. but whenever i do this the horse speeds p. i pull back a little, but then the horse doesn't listen
@Footphobics01 i steer with reins but my instucter tells me to steer mostly with legs too so maybe you kick him too hard. you might want to kick him very gently.
I really want to learn horse riding, but the problem is I suck at it and i'm pretty old (19) for it to learn I think. The first time I tried to trot, my foot got stuck and I fell off the horse immediately Lol =P But I really want to learn it, but not particurlarly taking lessons. Any tips to 'not fall of' a horse? =P
Hi, I have trouble getting the horse I ride (carlos) into a trot.. My instructor says he's lazy and need a bit of a get up and go, I've tried and feel completely hopeless: (
I remember my first and only riding lesson (thanks to my sister) and the riding instructor didn't tell me annything about what to do when the horse, well I think she was actually a pony started trotting so she had a go at me saying you have to stand up in the stirrup or you'll hurt Cookie (the pony I was riding) How was I supposed to know?!
@101breyercolecter you are in rithym with they hindquarters as they come forwards you should feal a bump and you should rise then sitback down lightly
Personally.. I am very bad at sitting trot... i cant keep in the saddle... but in others, there aint anything to worry about.. I love canter.. but, about your question: i cant really give you straight answer cause you have to feel the horse movement, i have riden 2 horses, One was half smaller and she had short steps, meaning you have to move your waist quicker, and the second one is big one, he has big steps and you can feel them more.
@101BreyerCollector yeah the right front leg is going with the hind left leg , to make it more humpiere . and with an icelandic horse they have a tolt , as same you that the right front leg is going same as the right hind .
@Msmusicca thanks, yes i road my friends morgan and he is both western amd english, he's awesome but only thing is, is that when you post trot with him, it's hard to define where hes at because his take off he does a little jump/buck thing, but yes i'm working on post trot now, have cones and stops, walks down, and the sit trot, now i just need post trot
i have to say... after ALL the clips iv watched about how to trot your the most understandable one! also you say all the important things in one when the others do it bit by bit :) great clip thank you
@kikululu@kikululu Well I wouldnt want to be calling my horse a hoe!Whoa is actually the correct way to say it.Its fine if you may have slipped and say "hoe" but it drives me crazy when people just normally say "Hoe" to tell their horse to stop.I personally think the girl in this video is a great rider, she is a great teacher but as everyone else everyone doesn't always agree with other people.
@countrygirl999999 Uh, it actually depends on the way you train your horse, It's the sound, and the feeling of relaxation that directs them to stop, not the actual word. Usually, I don't even say 'whoa,' I just exhale and sink further into the saddle. if need be, then I say 'whoa,' and if that still doesn't work, a correction with the reins. Ask, then tell, then command.
@Thoroughbred17 Duh,I'm talking about on the ground what if you wanted your horse to stop on the ground you tell them "whoa" what if you lunge the horse and you want them to stop you say "whoa" this isnt a new thing this is the word that has also saved peoples life, there is this video of this lady she was doing barrels but her horse reared up and flipped over backward with her the horse got up and the horse started walking off the ladies foot was caught in the stirrup the horse started...
@countrygirl999999 All right, all right, no need to be rude. I did say it was how the horse was trained. Horses cannot differentiate between subtle differences like 'whoa' and 'ho.' This is also a video about RIDING, not groundwork, and therefore, the energy of a rider to their horse is plainer to see. The relationship between human and horse is a delicate thing, and once it reaches its high, the horse will respond very willingly to very subtle cues.
@kikululu Well I wouldnt want to be calling my horse a hoe!Whoa is actually the correct way to say it.Its fine if you may have slipped and say "hoe" but it drives me crazy when people just normally say "Hoe" to tell their horse to stop.I personally think the girl in this video is a great rider, she is a great teacher but as everyone else everyone doesn't always agree with other people.
Ok, so normally I don't comment on Youtube, let alone login to my account, but seriously people... not telling you what to do, but you don't have to diss the girl even if you don't like her video or disagree. She's obviously trying her best here to help beginner riders. She's young, so give her a break. These personal attacks some people are writing are completely insensitive.
Personally, I don't think that her voice is annoying at all; she's just trying to project it, without shouting.
i started trotting today , only thing is i cant keep my legs back you know like in the right position how do i keep them in the right poition while doing everything else ??
@ALI1247 No just when you decide to canter sit and ask with your outside leg back a little bit and make sure he/she is on the right lead!!! :D hope that helped
@ALI1247 When your horse canters, they have one front leg stretching further forward than the other. You can check this by looking down at the top of their shoulder blades and it is quite an obvious action. To get the right lead, ask your horse to canter, and if their inside leg is stretching further forward, you have the correct one, if not, you can trot and try again, or do a flying change (which is quite an advanced move) :) Hope this helps :)

Hey pplz i was wondering how to turn a horse without the reins. I put pressure with one leg behind the girth, he sometimes turns and if he does its very wide??? PLZ HELP!
@mybirdyrox you are pretty much right. if you want to turn left, take your left leg behind the girth, and apply pressure. this should make your horse turn his back side out in the opposite direction you want to go, therefore causing him to turn! (and vise versa with the right) well it should work if you have a well trained horse at least! :P Good luck
@Xxhorsegirl mabey cuz im ur cuzen nd ur a big lyer u don't even ride horses cuz ur only 8 or nine years old nd u bounce alot cuz one day i was in ur lesson nd u were otta control
Ok, I have had 5 lessons on horse riding so far and i am loving it. I am off the lunge on trotting but i am finding it really hard to keep the horse going and to keep my heels down permanently. I was wondering if this is normal for a beginner and can anyway give me any tips please? Thanks :) x
i love horses so much that my dad he bought me my own american quarter horse. she is 7 and her name is sophie and he is my baby girl and im never going to let her go. I LOVE HORSES!!!!!!! and my baby girl
Notice she sat back in her seat at 1.24 + said whoa - but kept walkin. If you're new with a horse - you must work on your commands and leads - whoa does not = walk, it means stop. I encourage people to make a full stop on a whoa, cuz if you wanna slow to a walk, you say walk n pull back - thats different. Big difference if you're new with a horse or a new horse - otherwise you're horse will keep goin! Regardless - great vid - definitely recommend it. Thanks!
In increasing overall balance, a good method is riding bareback or without your stirrups. Or, do a lot of work in a half-seat. It'll help your balance, but also help you sink into your heel. Once you've got a pretty solid base in your halfseat, try walk-trot-walk transitions while you're in it. If you fall back, you still need work. But, my favourite, when you're doing a posting trot, stay up for an extra beat, sit, up for two beats, sit, etc.
What you need to do is encourage your horse with your legs. When you sit for one beat nudge your horse and quicken your rising trot. So instead of 1....2....1....2 it would be like 1.2.1.2 if that makes any sense :D I used to have the same problem when I started first, but you have to feel what your horse is like and respond. Try that next time you ride :)
here's a little training exercise for your horse. Ask him to trot lightly, the way you would prefer to ask (i'm sure you don't want to squeeze the crap outa him all lesson) if he doesn't respond, ask more firmly, give him a quick kick (not too hard) or a tap behind the leg with the stick. He should trot, if he does, pet him and bring him back to a walk, then ask again with a light leg, you may need to repeat but i bet he'll do it 1st or 2nd time around. Make sure your instrctor is ok with it 1st
you might want to mention that at the posting trot you go up when the outside leg moves forward 8D. it took me a while to remember that when i first started so it might be a helpful hint to everyone new! 8D
i like this girl a lot better than the one on the western horse. better way to describe coming down from a trot to walk, when sitting, make sure its not like when yours sitting the trot. when sitting the trot you move with it, whereas when sitting to ask for walk, you want to make sure your not still moving with the horse. Obviously you dont want to go rigid and bounce on his back, but you dont want to be encouraging him to move forward with your seat.
When I started riding I learned rising trot first.

Ok, I have had 5 lessons on horse riding so far and i am loving it. I am off the lunge on trotting but i am finding it really hard to keep the horse going and to keep my heels down permanently. I was wondering if this is normal for a beginner and can anyway give me any tips please? Thanks :) x

kellie5029 try saying to yourself "oompa loompa" over and over again and you soon get into the rhythm and posting is then soooo much easier!
horseluva1221 2 years ago
Notice she sat back in her seat at 1.24 + said whoa - but kept walkin. If you're new with a horse - you must work on your commands and leads - whoa does not = walk, it means stop. I encourage people to make a full stop on a whoa, cuz if you wanna slow to a walk, you say walk n pull back - thats different. Big difference if you're new with a horse or a new horse - otherwise you're horse will keep goin! Regardless - great vid - definitely recommend it. Thanks!
mrq0187 2 years ago
it depends on the horse, alot of times woah means go down one transition. which while your walking means stop.

I love your horse! It's beautiful!
In my opinion you lean forward too much sometimes and also your arms are pretty straight most of the time:) I do the same haha; good job though!

i just started troting and i cant seem to keep my balance while posting any tipz .
by the way pretty horse ...!
kellie5029 2 years ago
In increasing overall balance, a good method is riding bareback or without your stirrups. Or, do a lot of work in a half-seat. It'll help your balance, but also help you sink into your heel. Once you've got a pretty solid base in your halfseat, try walk-trot-walk transitions while you're in it. If you fall back, you still need work. But, my favourite, when you're doing a posting trot, stay up for an extra beat, sit, up for two beats, sit, etc.

any body no how 2 make the horse go faster in a rising trot my instructor keeps tellin me off cus i go slow in a rising trot
ilovehorses911 2 years ago
What you need to do is encourage your horse with your legs. When you sit for one beat nudge your horse and quicken your rising trot. So instead of 1....2....1....2 it would be like 1.2.1.2 if that makes any sense :D I used to have the same problem when I started first, but you have to feel what your horse is like and respond. Try that next time you ride :)
Hope this helps!
AmberBotteley 2 years ago
thnx i'll try that on my next lesson (2morrow)
ilovehorses911 2 years ago
here's a little training exercise for your horse.

Thats a pretty horse :)

you might want to mention that at the posting trot you go up when the outside leg moves forward 8D. it took me a while to remember that when i first started so it might be a helpful hint to everyone new! 8D

very preety horse.
GoldenOaksRanch 2 years ago
i like this girl a lot better than the one on the western horse. better way to describe coming down from a trot to walk, when sitting, make sure its not like when yours sitting the trot. when sitting the trot you move with it, whereas when sitting to ask for walk, you want to make sure your not still moving with the horse. Obviously you dont want to go rigid and bounce on his back, but you dont want to be encouraging him to move forward with your seat.
