Just fired my sr556e for the first time yesterday at the range and am really liking it so far. Only got about 100 rounds down range before work to sight in the leupold Mark AR 3x9 got 2" groups at 100 yards with 10 round groups very happy considering the trigger a little stiff. Got some steel in to try this weekend see how that runs.
Very nice AR and excellent review, as always man. It is good to know that the front rail is not meant to be removed... I like the option to switch things out so I won't be getting this one.
Does Brown Bear or Silver Bear ammunition have the same characteristics as wolf ammo or is one better than the other? (I know, both suck, but which one sucks less?)

wolf quality control is pathetic these days, barnaul is much better. Chronographing shows that the steel cased ammo is firing at advertised velocity but suspect that because it is steel cased the pressures are lower, the straight cased 223 was never designed with the intention of being loaded in steel cased cartridges like the 7.62x39 and the 7.92x33. I have used golden bear with much better results though you still have to use the no.3 setting.
I've ran wolf ammo during training in all of my AR's and never had any issues. I have seen wolf ammo do poorly in other AR's, just never in mine. I guess I'll see what happens when I pick up my SR 556. Gonna break it in with Brass case ammo first though.
@MrMatthewdixon a lot of hard core shooters that do competitions have vests for simply quicker reload and for obvious tactical reasons while shooting competitions with moving to cover A to B and then to C with 4 reloads
It is said Ruger has not fixed the the carrier tilt problem, and that the poor design the problem can never be fixed. If you want hard core bad ass 5.56 then get a mini 14.
Other manufacturers of short stroke piston ARs HAVE fixed the problem with "enhanced BCG" which I think means stronger metals. If Ruger doesn't fix it, it means they chose not to spend the extra money.
@Amarine2B depends on your use of the gun. as a sbr, going down to a 7.5 or 10 inch barrel, definitely. as a 16inch+ semi auto weapon that you use for LE, home defense, target shooting whatever, it wouldnt REALLY matter. the gun will get dirty either way, whether its in the bolt section or at the piston and it will still get damned hot. where you want that heat and dirt to go is up to you. a high quality DI which costs the same as a mid range piston will match or best a piston of that type.
@Amarine2B Not yet. Not sure if you've had this answered yet or not, but here's my (all be it late) input. The piston system does have it's reliabilty advantages and some minor recoil reduction however does add some more frontward weight and at this stage in the game does take away a bit of the accuracy and is a higher cost. That being said, my Armalite hasn't ever jammed on me (even with Wolf :D) and was way cheaper from my gun shop.
@19Kettle93 There are LWRC's that have spiral-fluted barrels that reduce the barrel's weight by ~20% while maintaining structural rigidity (along with just looking awesome). The difference in accuracy is negligible, and a quality piston AR is still more than capable of shooting sub-moa groups. Yes, piston AR's are more expensive, sometimes by quite a lot, but in the end you do get what you pay for.
@Amarine2B cont. Sorry, ran out of space. All the minor "bashing," of the piston system being said, if the cost and accuracy disadvantages do go away one day I can always just buy a new upper or build one.
IMO, yes. To my way of thinking the long term benefits of reduced heat exposure to critical parts, reduced cleaning effort and adjustability in gas pressure settings far outweigh the added cost of a piston AR. "Loss" in accuracy compared to DI weapons is laughable. I defy anyone to demonstrate a significant difference in accuracy when shooting conditions are remotely related to the real world.
Buy once, cry once. Buy a good piston gun like this Ruger & don't look back.
I want a piston gun for the mere fact that it runs cleaner in the action. That way IF something like a WROL situation were to happen, I'd be able to go longer between cleanings. But that's me.
@fwbrc51 they are in a desert. lots of strange things are captured on film out there. maybe nutnfany isnt who he says he is. after all, he isn't using his real name. i think i might have seen some white vehicles out on the hills. LOL
Finally picked up my SR-556C yesterday. I picked up 500 rounds of Wolf cheap to see how my gun would run it. I know you said you had issues. I went out to the desert today and put about 170 rounds through with no issues. Not a lot, I realize. This was just a quick test to see if I had any immediate problems. Not a single jam. Going back out tomorrow to get a feel for the accuracy. Going to sight in the scope and try some 100 yard tests.
You can buy the SR-556C upper for use on another AR so I assume you could put another AR upper on the 556. I almost purchased a 556 upper, $1400! But my gun buying spree wil have to be put on hold while I try to straigten out one of my kids financial situation. Need a new safe anyway, so I should buy that first.
Ha porno beats like that's not been said in 20 other of his videos but it's still funny. And now after watching this I am afraid to shoot some wolf ammo : (
I love your reviews! Congratulations, I wonder if you will review for the SIG 556 and maybe a comparison of these rifles as well as others from the same platform as h & k and others.
I love your reviews! Congratulations, I wonder if you will review for the SIG 556 and maybe a comparison of these rifles as well as others from the same platform as h & k and others.
That casing getting stuck (@ 21:25) means that the case expanded due to heat (normal cond.) and the gas pushing the bolt carrier back too fast, and incidentally prematurely, pulling at the casing before it could relax from the expansion prior to being pulled by the bolt. It rips the casing and ends up stuck. Less gas would regulate the power needed to pull the casing at the perfect time without stripping it prematurely ( as noted by the POF - P415 vid). Dirty ammo, yes, but not dirty enough gun.
If the casing on the Wolf ammo were ripped by the extractor, then wouldn't that be an issue of the ammunition and not the gun? It sounds like the extractor had plenty of pull to get the case out, just that the round was flawed.
@AustinAlive1 The SR-556 uses a piston instead of direct gas impingement to cycle the bolt. When a round is fired, the gas that would normally travel down the gas tube to blow the bolt back instead blows on a piston rod that pushes the bolt back to cycle. This prevents most of the residual gas and nearly all heat from getting to the bolt. Thus, a cleaner and cooler receiver. A bonus is the adjustable regulator, which allows ammo with different pressures to fire consistently and with fewer jams.
I believe it's a #60 Torx bit that you slide in the end to remove the flash hider "thingy"! Using a vise just makes me cringe. Next time you need to add paint, try that torx bit thingy. IT WORKS
I really wish you would quit making a division between us lowly "civilians" and the police. Police are civilians also-civilians who are paid by the rest of us lowly lumpen proletariat scum
@37NAU Chill dude. There is some distinction between Civilians, Military, and Police. I don't speak for NutNFancy or Veri, but I don't think that Nut'n or anyone in TNP looks down on civilians. Those in public service roles, be it military, police, or firefighters, do jobs that most people either can't do, or won't do, and they do deserve recognition for their work. They have earned their place in TNP, but that doesn't mean civilians haven't as well. Stop taking things so personally and relax.
Hey, I have what might sound like a stupid question: When a gun has a "gas operated" system (by that I mean for ejecting shells and whatnot), do you actually have to put some type of gas in it? Again, I know this may sound stupid, but I just don't know.
@llamadudeguy No you dont. It just means that the system pushes the gas produced from firing a round back through the gas piston tube to eject the shells and to cycle the ammo.
The 1-9 twist is becomeing MUCH more popular, and will shoot 40-69 grain on most all, quite a few 1-9 barrels shoot the 77-grains EXTREMELY WELL! And the 1-7 twist WILL WEAR quicker than a 1-9 twist given all things equal(bbl length, bullet weight, bbl steel, chromed/non-chromed, etc), so I think given the necessity for high velocity for fragmentation/breakin the bullet at the cannelure for the 5.56, the 1-9 twist is probably the best all-around option, especially on a piston CARBINE/NON DMR.
after days of online research I've seen enough. carrier tilt in the SR556 is an issue. noticable buffer tube wear @ 400~600 rnds. heavy wear/galling @1500+ rnds. obvious metal shavings in trigger group~lower reciever. this stinks and the story remains the same. get a DI AR-15.. or an AK47. or better yet, get both.
Well Nutn' I thought I would be the bearer of Bad news... Looks like I am the victim of carrier tilt in my Sr-556!!! :-( Not sure what happened first. The buffer retaining pin was sheared off and the tube had a obvious gouge to the bottom of it from the BCA. I"m not certain if the retaining pin failed allowing the BCA to tilt down or if it Tilted down into the pin. no wear prior to this and about 3000 rounds through it b4 this. Good test to ruger warrenty though. I will let you know...
at 0:28 you can clearly see the grouping size of the first 5 rounds, the spread is between 100mm to 300mm, from a distance which I'm almost positive that is 25meters, using an optical sight. It's either the guy who is shooting is really crap, or the rifle is crap, but I don't think the rifle itself is crap, the barrel barely moved when firing, the recoil is very low, so I'd say the firer is really crap. I don't know what happened after this because I closed the video then.
thanks to your great review on this rifle, i have bought myself one. awesome AR 15! i did take into consideration the weight issue you clearly state on this rifle. so i bought the sr556c model. the barrel is a little shorter and fluted. the suppressor is forged with the barrel due to ATF standards. but with all these things, it has taken about a pound maybe a little more off from the original model. it's not bad with quick target acquisition. thanks for the awesome review!
@MrSuperfrog6 I don't live in Western Canada but I know that once I get my PAL I will get a weapon in the U.S and import it with all the required forms (PAL, Firearms registration certificate, and the authorization to travel.
The price is fair and way lower than other piston AR's. Even if you bought a standard AR and then bought the flip-up sights, rail package, two hi-cap mags and a case, you're still going to end up spending $1200-1400.
Nutnfancy, I just want to thank you for all the time and homework you put into these posts. I'm not sure if you've done a review of the Barret REC-7 yet. If you could find the time to review that particular weapon I would greatly appropriate it! I just want to thank you again, Keep up the great work man!
Nutn, just wanted to say a big thank you! Based largely on your review I purchased a SR 556c this week. It is awesome! I have been shooting M-16s and Ar-15s for about 20 yrs in the Army and in my LEO career and this gun rocks. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend the Sr to any AR lover. Keep up the great work.
Excellent video, I very much enjoyed this demonstration. I wan't one of these so bad I can taste the gas! 8) BTW, I never shoot wolf, I know its cheap but you get what you pay for.
Planning on buying the SR-556 in 6.8 SPC. Every review or video I watch all they talk about is the 5.56. Is there a reason people lean towards the 5.56 over the 6.8 SPC? I understand that availability of ammo might be one issue but are there others? I plan on using mine for home defense/range and possibly even deer hunting until I can purchase a bolt action rifle. Also this will be my first AR-style rifle, very much looking forward to it!
i was looking at the ruger website and now they have a 556 6.8. The only question is, after your intal review have you had anymore trigger time with it and if so, has reliabilty been good enough for a tactical class?
Hey Nutn, I was thinking about purchasing a SR-556c. I know you are big into weight on your weapons so what do you think of the new model from Ruger? It has dropped a half pound off of the gun. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I'm looking for an AR that is reliable and around 7 to 8 hundred dollars even if its used. its just for home defense and target shooting every now and then I just want one that won't break and will fire when i need it to what model do you think is best for this? thank you very much love ure reviews!
This has the Wylde Chamber in it right? I assume that because Nutn says its 5.56.
What do you guys think about this being a first AR for me? I looked at the FN SCAR and Bushy ACR, and they are really pricey and I don't know the reliability and value of them. But I have choice between this and I have my eye for a 20" preban Colt H-Bar Competition sporter, I like the idea of the reliability of the piston system.
@RyanR3volution I might take the Colt if that's what you really want, the SR seems like a really nice gun but really unless you're really one hard core dude I bet a DI AR15 would work just fine, especially a Milspec one.
Your probably right if you maintained the DI gun but I am more of an AK guy so I want a piston AR that is easy to clean and runs clean. Its all about the confidence in your weapon, you need it or else you are destined to failure on some level.
@RyanR3volution I'm partial to the SKS and AK myself. Pistons seem to have some really nice advantages, just keep in mind that you are buying a system that most likely used proprietary parts, it would be wise to stock up on spare parts for things the like the piston and guide rods, maybe the BCG. Either way I bet if you buy quality you'll be happy with it. Good luck with the purchas and stay safe.

I've ran wolf ammo during training in all of my AR's and never had any issues. I have seen wolf ammo do poorly in other AR's, just never in mine. I guess I'll see what happens when I pick up my SR 556. Gonna break it in with Brass case ammo first though.

It is said Ruger has not fixed the the carrier tilt problem, and that the poor design the problem can never be fixed. If you want hard core bad ass 5.56 then get a mini 14.
MrAppleseed88 8 months ago
@MrAppleseed88
Other manufacturers of short stroke piston ARs HAVE fixed the problem with "enhanced BCG" which I think means stronger metals. If Ruger doesn't fix it, it means they chose not to spend the extra money.

@Amarine2B I'm not nutnfancy. But, what are you going to use the rifle for?
iMagUdspEllr 8 months ago
@Amarine2B It depends on what you want to do with them.
Kylef7735 7 months ago
@Amarine2B depends on your use of the gun. as a sbr, going down to a 7.5 or 10 inch barrel, definitely. as a 16inch+ semi auto weapon that you use for LE, home defense, target shooting whatever, it wouldnt REALLY matter. the gun will get dirty either way, whether its in the bolt section or at the piston and it will still get damned hot. where you want that heat and dirt to go is up to you. a high quality DI which costs the same as a mid range piston will match or best a piston of that type.
jimmyhoffa9 6 months ago
@Amarine2B buy it. the biggest weakness of the ar15 is the di system (and the 5.56). A di 6.8 = perfect

@Amarine2B Yes they are but its a matter of opinion.
wsmarines 5 months ago
@Amarine2B Not yet. Not sure if you've had this answered yet or not, but here's my (all be it late) input. The piston system does have it's reliabilty advantages and some minor recoil reduction however does add some more frontward weight and at this stage in the game does take away a bit of the accuracy and is a higher cost. That being said, my Armalite hasn't ever jammed on me (even with Wolf :D) and was way cheaper from my gun shop.
19Kettle93 4 months ago
@19Kettle93 There are LWRC's that have spiral-fluted barrels that reduce the barrel's weight by ~20% while maintaining structural rigidity (along with just looking awesome). The difference in accuracy is negligible, and a quality piston AR is still more than capable of shooting sub-moa groups. Yes, piston AR's are more expensive, sometimes by quite a lot, but in the end you do get what you pay for.
Cosmo1093 3 months ago
@Amarine2B cont. Sorry, ran out of space. All the minor "bashing," of the piston system being said, if the cost and accuracy disadvantages do go away one day I can always just buy a new upper or build one.
19Kettle93 4 months ago
@Amarine2B
Buy a good piston gun like this Ruger & don't look back.
wildcatactual 3 months ago
I want a piston gun for the mere fact that it runs cleaner in the action. That way IF something like a WROL situation were to happen, I'd be able to go longer between cleanings. But that's me.

MrClayfingers 1 year ago
i has one :)
158057 1 year ago
If the casing on the Wolf ammo were ripped by the extractor, then wouldn't that be an issue of the ammunition and not the gun? It sounds like the extractor had plenty of pull to get the case out, just that the round was flawed.
paintbreak2000 1 year ago
can someone please explain to me what the piston driven part of the rifle is and means, im new to this stuff
AustinAlive1 1 year ago
@AustinAlive1 The SR-556 uses a piston instead of direct gas impingement to cycle the bolt. When a round is fired, the gas that would normally travel down the gas tube to blow the bolt back instead blows on a piston rod that pushes the bolt back to cycle. This prevents most of the residual gas and nearly all heat from getting to the bolt. Thus, a cleaner and cooler receiver. A bonus is the adjustable regulator, which allows ammo with different pressures to fire consistently and with fewer jams.
paintbreak2000 1 year ago
I believe it's a #60 Torx bit that you slide in the end to remove the flash hider "thingy"! Using a vise just makes me cringe. Next time you need to add paint, try that torx bit thingy. IT WORKS

DawnOfDaybreak 1 year ago
Hey, I have what might sound like a stupid question: When a gun has a "gas operated" system (by that I mean for ejecting shells and whatnot), do you actually have to put some type of gas in it? Again, I know this may sound stupid, but I just don't know.
llamadudeguy 1 year ago
@llamadudeguy no, it directly uses gas from the expended cartridge to cycle the bolt and insert the next round.
SimpleStuff31 1 year ago
@SimpleStuff31 k thanks
llamadudeguy 1 year ago

I will let you know...
paulbart24 1 year ago
at 0:28 you can clearly see the grouping size of the first 5 rounds, the spread is between 100mm to 300mm, from a distance which I'm almost positive that is 25meters, using an optical sight.

The price is fair and way lower than other piston AR's. Even if you bought a standard AR and then bought the flip-up sights, rail package, two hi-cap mags and a case, you're still going to end up spending $1200-1400.

RyanR3volution 1 year ago
@RyanR3volution I might take the Colt if that's what you really want, the SR seems like a really nice gun but really unless you're really one hard core dude I bet a DI AR15 would work just fine, especially a Milspec one.
oldannyboy37 1 year ago
@oldannyboy37
Your probably right if you maintained the DI gun but I am more of an AK guy so I want a piston AR that is easy to clean and runs clean. Its all about the confidence in your weapon, you need it or else you are destined to failure on some level.
RyanR3volution 1 year ago
@RyanR3volution I'm partial to the SKS and AK myself. Pistons seem to have some really nice advantages, just keep in mind that you are buying a system that most likely used proprietary parts, it would be wise to stock up on spare parts for things the like the piston and guide rods, maybe the BCG. Either way I bet if you buy quality you'll be happy with it. Good luck with the purchas and stay safe.
