@SimTripps please can u help i remember a film like this coming on tv when i was young but it played on two days but i dont hitnk it was this versiion but this story
Saw this as a callow boy of nine and to believe it has stuck with me oh these many years is proof of it's timeless quality. A brilliant rendition as this (and quite close to the original novel I believe,) deserves more praise.
Have been looking for this particular Frankenstein for many years, remembering it from my childhood as I saw it on german TV. Finally I have the title...Thanx:-) Now, I have to find the full movie on DVD!
I remember watching this on TV when i was about 9 and it scared the crap out of me! I think it was shown on NBC over a couple of nights. I am surprised my parents let me watch it, actually.
The most membery part is when Frankenstein pulled off the beauty Frankenstein lady's head. As a kid i was at the age of 8yrs old or so and it shocked the shit out of me and left a good memory, luv dis movie classic !
I just purchased the dvd of the entire movie from amazon for like $13.00 s/h included, and in the very beginning James Mason does a brief narration of Mary Shelley and speaks about the movie-watching right now a perfect way to spend a rainy sunday afternoon..
Probably the best adaptation of the Frankenstein story ever made. Lavish and very provocative (especially for its time), it holds up remarkably well today. Nice to know this amazing film hasn't been forgotten!
I saw this when I was 9 yrs. old. (My parents were away and my sister was "babysitting" -lol-) The movie both paralyzed and fascinated me. When I was 12 I finally got the original story and have read it a dozen times since. And I will always remember this amazing adaptation. Michael Sarazin R.I.P.
I loved this version of Frankenstein when I was a kid. I thought it was the best adaptation ever. It just had a realism about it that other adaptations seemed to lack, and an innate "grotesqueness" that was highly effective but not over-dramatic
this adaptation was way ahead of its' time for 1973. I saw this when first broadcast on CBS. It got rave reviews for being bold and scary, and played in syndication for years on the Late Late Movie. I love the 70's.
I saw this on TV back in the day....I have it on DVD now!! MOST FANTASTIC!!!!!!! If any of you don't have this DVD....Amazon has it (that's where I got it) well worth whatever price it is...
I remember staying up to watch this when I was really young. The bit when the
arm crawled out of his bag and across the floor terrified me. I have seen this recently on dvd and I still think its the best adaptation of the FRANKENSTEIN story
This has to be one of my favourite films ever. Especially Michael Sarrazins creature and James Mason !! I'd love you to put the bit where the creature finds he's decaying in full. Thats one of the most heartbreaking performancesI've ever seen !
This was a big ratings success at the time. My feeling was that people had waited for years to see Jane Seymour get her head torn off and they were not going to miss their chance!
Jane Seymour was unknown at the time to everyone but the viewers of a couple of British TV series. Don't think anyone "had waited years" to see her do anything...
This is a great movie... pretty violent and scary for a made for TV film. The scenes on the ship scared me when I was a kid! And I love the ballroom scene where the monster pulls off the female creature's head!
I've always loved frankenstein!!!! I love the "monster"! I never really thought of him that way though!!!! Victor was the monster not the poor creature. i've never really seen an accurate animation of the creature though!!! None of the movies really portray the real creature. REPLY IF YOU AGREE!!!!!!!!
I was totaly freeked out as a child on how gruesome the deaths in this movie were. I had the creeps for years after watching James Mason get zapped by lightning after being strung up on the ship mast. I guess that a movie that can create deep feelings like that would have to be done well. It seems to be a forgotten classic.
@rehetbutler I know what you mean! I was about 9 when I first saw this on TV. Parts of it gave me nightmares and the part where the monster pops off Jane Seymour's head haunted me for years! Now I can't find this movie anywhere to watch it again.
@DandAinTac ....It is good to know that I wasn't the only kid deeply scarred by this movie. There was another grusome death in an old movie that did that too me, Fantastic Voyage when the white blood cell ate the ship and Dr. Michaels with it. That creeped me out for years, and yet it remains one of my all time favs.
@rehetbutler You know, I've never seen Fantastic Voyage in it's entirety. I think the movie scene that has stayed with me the most--and was my first big-time, traumatic, terrorizing gross-out shocker, was in Alien when the little monster came busting out of that guy's chest. I swear I felt, at the time, as if some of the gore had just splattered me in the face! To this day, I still have a hard time watching it. I'll have to watch for Fantastic Voyage on DVD--I feel I've missed something.
I remember my oldest brother taking me to see Alien, and I was just totaly blown away by that movie. Fantastic Voyage won a few awards for special effects and musical score I think. For 1966 it was waay out there. Some of the effects shots may look familier because Cinemascope also made the Planet of the Apes movies.
Is there a way to add each other as friends on this site? I would like to keep this conversation going between us.
@rehetbutler I went to your channel and tried to add you as a friend--not sure how it works. Looking at your channel, it looks like we may have some other common interests as well as a very similar demographic. There's also the message function. I would like to continue discussing film. I am a student of communication and enjoy talking about various movies--especially sci-fi, also some horror movies, and classics as well. Be warned though that I don't care too much for most recent movies.
Finally, I found it? This stinking movie traumatized me as a child when it was on T.V.
I was 7 yrs old when this 2 part T.V. movie was on. For years after I was scared to go to sleep because I thought the crawling arm was gonna get me. Stupid thing was I watched it again a few years after and solidified my fear of the dark which continued until I was about 20 yrs. I am a horror buff but this was too much for a 7 yr. old.
Get the FULL mini series. The theatrical version on DVD is very much edited-and a lot of character development is lost. Just as it was with the Salem's Lot theatrical release-get the mini series.on DVD.
I remember watching this on TV and was amazed at how great and well crafted this movie was. One of the best tellings ever. Shame this version has been overlooked...
Who scored this film? That theme was firmly planted in my subconscious, and it just got ripped right out and dangled before me. Probably haven't heard it in 30 years.
This film is such a welcome departure from the book, and is CLASSIC!
I wonder if you're in pain being dissolved in that acid?

I saw the miniseries in the eighties. I enjoyed this adaptation and suspense. But what I remember the most back then, the scary "crawling arm".

Yep I remember watching this one on t.v. as a child.. I had the biggest crush on Leonard Whiting!

The first part is fucking amazing, the second part is a disappointing generic mesh.
I'm sorry guys but without purpose when The Monster teared off Agatha's head it didn't make sense and felt like it was going for shock value.
But I'm glad it has love, because that's what I would want.

I saw it when I was 8 or 9. Scared the crap out of me, I didn't want to watch but I had to, if you know what I mean.
Nearly 40 years later, I think the movie has aged "beautiful"ly.

A million miles from the real story but a great movie in it's own right. Much better than Branagh's fiasco.
