  • I want to see AMADINDA version.

  • Is anyone aware of any visual recordings of this that are available to buy? I'd very much appreciate this or something similar in DVD format or suchlike.

  • I've never heard any of Steve Reich's music up till now. This is wonderful.

  • Saw this at the BBC Proms (Royal Albert Hall) last night with the same line up. Beyond words incredible!

  • HYPNOTIC

  • reminds me sim city 3000 music

  • I get to play this piece next semester, I'm SO excited! I hope I get to play marimba or xylo

  • I love this track so dearly, and I appreciate the upload, and I'm sure it's not your fault--but that skipping in the audio makes me want to find whoever's responsible and smash their skull

  • MAY THE REICH LAST A THOUSAND YEARS!!

  • I'd like to see this performed while on shrooms

  • The main melody has the same rhytm that Clapping Music i think...

    ta-tatata-tata-ta-tata

  • @dracainbloodly indeed

  • I love to see this. Most of Reich's stuff is

  • JOYFUL HEART JUMP!

  • I saw this at the Royal Festival Hall a few months ago having seen it once before. This time, Reich himself was playing one of the pianos. I was absolutely mesmerised. To see musicians working this hard for this long is incredible. The London Sinfonietta and Synergy Vocals received a standing ovation the likes of which I've never seen and Reich beckoned for the sound man to come on stage to take applause.

The first half of the concert was Clapping Music, Electric Counterpoint and Octet.

  • Wow, I'm jealous!

  • @lucavigg You're so lucky. I do wonder how the musicians don't suffer from RSI though.

  • @lucavigg Problem with Steve on the piano is that he's always dragging! But he's wonderful

  • steve reich puts philip glass to shame

  • @MagicDolphinGO I don't think so... I'm a huge fan of both. Just different styles, not really better or worse in my opinion.

Of course, if you don't like Glass, that's okay.

  • EEEEEEk! The best part!

  • Oh I want to see this live so much.

  • superbe!!

  • performance on Thursday 24th Sept at Cité de la Musique in Strasbourg, France!!!! I'll be there! I'm still langing!

  • Do they lose it a bit at 1.57ish, or am I imagining it?

  • I think they might lose it a bit yeah. I'd like to say it's intentional but my other recordings don't include it!

  • on dirait que certains instruments accélère très peu juste à 1:54

  • They were indeed a bit off at 1:54 . But it's ok, when you look at the complexness of the music...

  • something definitely happened -- i think the pulse kind of got screwed up with the pianos and marimbas, and this messed up the tempo for the violins; but they recovered very fast

  • sounds like the cello and violin got slightly out of tune with each other for a couple of seconds there.

  • this is the best one.

  • i like punk music and this is a really punk song

  • God I love this piece so much! It's like an obsession that won't leave me alone (that's a good thing though). This performance has a very human element to it that I miss sometimes in the recordings I have of this piece

  • I feel exactly the same !

  • its a little slow for my liking, but still you get a good feel for what this passage is about

  • its not really supposed to be about anything.

  • Music for 18 Musicians, for 4 female voices & 16 instruments

Performed by Steve Reich & Musicians

At the close of the 1970s, The New York Times declared Steve Reichs Music for 18 Musicians one of the ten most important works of that decade. But the passage of time has proven that inaccurate.

  • It is repetitive but it is also changing. Just a little each time round. It is hard music to appreciate as it is different and will take few listens to tune your ear to. I promise you when you do get it you will love it. Coffee is good to stay awake. I like to listen to this music when played live with my eyes closed sometimes . It adds more dimension to this music without the distraction of all those musicians squirming on stage trying to play it in tune and in time.

  • as much as i love listening to music with my eyes closed, i think watching this piece being performed is just as gratifying. this piece is as much a physical test as it is musical, and at about 1:20 you see the hands and mallets moving in sync with each other, and it looks like a machine. phenomenal.

  • I wouldn't mind if they put more energy into it. Repetitive does not mean 'boring', after all.

  • It does become a little difficult where the phrases cut off right where the human mind would normal start a crescendo or decrescendo.

    Personally, I like the ambience.

  • I absolutely love this piece :)

  • 4:01 :))

  • great stuff! More!

  • marvelous sound!
