really like the vid bud im thinking about the nessmuk for a stalking knife for deer, there cheap here in the uk and readily available lovw the channel and ploughing thru your vids.. i subscribed please check out my deer stalking stuff nice one cheers....
What if you cut the wood diagonally. The problem you're having with splitting is because of the way the wood fibers run through the disc. A diagonal cut would give you longer wood fibers therefore reducing the chance of splitting.
@woodcrafter76 Thanks Steve...all the talk about conserving resorces got me to thinking about it...Ill have another video up tomorrow, and hopefull I will have the kinks out of it so it will work...that condor is one heck of a knife for its size...its no Pathfinder....but its held its own for the money...and its a good companion blade to my ax, or saw...though I usually take the axe with me lately.
@b1gje55e most of the problem seems to come from cutting the notch with the thick blade of the knife...using the multi tool, or the mora, I didnt have the problem of it splitting the wood like it did...and cutting the slice at an angle seemed to add a little more surface area, and change the grain pattern of the wood also...new vid coming tomorrow.
@bushcraftbartons Thanks Mike...hows the snow up there...lol It actually got cold today...its down to 37 right now...and we had a chance of snow...but I think thats short lived...it doesnt snow here untill feb, or march if at all most of the time
@MrCableguyken Well brother I could certainly send you some :) It`s been snowing for days here and there is a lot more coming...tell me if you want a truck load of it :)
@oregonmikes that might work...also cutting it thicker, and using a thinner blade to carve the notch out might help...the angle might be the fix though, as it would cause the grain to be broken up between layers, making it stronger...and also giving you a slightly larger area to use...thus conserving even more wood...will have to give it a swing and let you know how it works
@Nativesurvival Thanks brother...Im almost getting a coal with the hand drill as fast as I can the bow drill...lol...and I got the blisters and calluses to show for it...but each time they get less blisters...so they are getting tougher and tougher....why dont ya kick around the idea, and see what you can come up with as well
@PerryKing96 1075 has slightly less carbon content than 1095 from what I can see, but there are other slight differences in other added alloys as well, though it it doesn't appear that anything but content of the substances is changed.
@PerryKing96 1075 will be a little softer when hardend...but not enough that it doesnt hold an edge...its just going to have a little more flex to it than 1095....and be a little more forgiving...it also doesnt throw as many sparks from a piece of flint...but it will still throw sparks.
@stonybrokebushcraf I think that is whats making mine split out...I am going to try this with the saw from the multi tool...and proper technique, and see if it works better...around here we have very little wood that is good for friction fires...so I am trying to find a way to conserve my resources.
Thanks for the video man :D

Or try cutting the notch before you burn the hole.

Interesting idea on the disk Ken, maybe try cutting the disk at an angle off the log

Good review, Mid 60's and in shorts! Man, I'm jealous, it's in the 30's here in Michigan and they are calling for snow the next 3-4 days.
