You can rest assured that Richard's favourite moments of his Farewell Tour were his successful moments. He had a great mid-season qualifying run of second, seventh and fourth, while also managing to lead the first five laps of the Pepsi 400. Along with this farewell lap, I'm sure that's how the King really wanted to be remembered: at the front, in the thick of things, even if only briefly. :-)
Musta been hard sitting there in that stock car...knowing that this will be the last time he ever races. Can you imagine what that must have felt like...
He must have replayed his entire life up to that moment in that couple of minutes.
class act mr richard petty! now days in nascar all you have is cry babys. and way to many stupid rules. richard petty's record does all his talking for him. (:>)
well he also won multiple races during the same week, the schedule nearly makes it impossible to catch his victory count, but none the less still remarkable thanks for posting
This is one of greatest moments in redneck history watching the king salute his subjects there never will be another, Jimmy can cram his 4 in a row king Richard will always be better cause he drove race cars when they were all stock hell they even used to give drivers a rebel flag after the southern 500 what happened to the good old days
its crazy to think that its been 17 plus yrs since this day. I still have Richard Petty The Legend documentary that was ordered for me when i was 10 yrs old on the day of this race november 15, 1992. Im 27 now but it seems like yesterday
@slayerdearly let see he at what 82 83 wins i think he well get at least 86 but how he been running past 3 years i don't see him winning 100 tho he be luckey to get 90
Richard Petty is the King all right! He is amazing at anything he does...just like when it comes to playing a hand of Poker! Yep! The King will be in a Major and elite Poker Tournament with other legends like Mike Ditka this fall in the Bahamas! Watching these two go head to head is a Kodak moment!
The King won 200 career races on the NASCAR circuit, along with 7 Sprint Cup/Winston Cup Series Championships tied with Dale Earnhardt Sr., and the King won 7 career Daytona 500's.
No one will beat those numbers.
Those numbers tell the story of how great Richard Petty was. Now we see him not in a race car, but in an around the garages at the races.
@88888888888anonymous Jimmie Johnson has won five championships by being the best driver in the last ten races and the tenth best in the previous twenty-six. Richard Petty won seven championships by being the best all year round. He is the KING, Jimmie will never even come close.
@boogioogigoof His championship wins are within the same series. They just changed the name. His championship wins are referred to as 'Championships in what is now called Sprint Cup'.
@TheSpiderTre and even if jimmie dose with 7 or more he did it with dirvers that cant drive here petty won them aginst the best the sport has seen waltrip, earnheardt, pearson, allision
i wounder how hard it was for him to retire. i mean wen u race and have so much fun for 40 years u just cant wake up and decide to reitre and let life go one. but Richard Petty will always be the king!
which race was his last win? i wasnt born after he retired sooo i dont know what his last win was but i know that petty, earnhardt sr., the allisons, pearson, yarlbrough and lots of others made nascar what it is today
Richards last win was the 1984 July Daytona race where I think he beat Yarlbrough by like half a nose. President Regan was there too, I believe it was on the 4th of July weekend so thats why I think Regan was there.
This race and this season proves that you dont NEED to have the Chase to have drama! I am 17 (I was not even 2 when this race was run FYI) but I find that watching this race on the VHS tape my parents recorded was so much more interesting than any race you see today. Plus, this was NASCAR's golden age when there were no conspiracy theories of ppl cheating, no chase format, no freezing the field, back when racing was racing and the boys were boys. Richard Petty, amazing racer, bar none.
The sad part about this is, most people only know nascar as it is today. They don't even know who Richard was and what he did for this sport. This is and was nascar, he is a legend.
I agree. I am 17 but I am a serious NASCAR buff so I know that Petty, Pearson, Yarlbrough, Earnhardt, Baker, Junior Johnson and the Allisons all made NASCAR what it is. I asked people if they knew about Richard Petty and them that raced before 2000, and they had no clue who he was. I was angry, they claimed they were real NASCAR fans. That is a slap in the face to me as a NASCAR fan if you say your a fan, yet you cant name the person who tops the list in everything imagineible in this sport.
