I am going to build one, but no tracking needed, just a laser sweep on top of my house with a 40 Watts slightly diverging laser. Imagine the laser as a shield around the house , any small bug that go through it will be blinded/fried. I have no neighbors for 100 feet, so the laser will loose power quickly as it is diverging.
Check out my homepage for further experiments using laser. There are several easy to do examples to split the beam, modulate on of the two and then recombine them to produce low frequency beats. These beats should be able to induce currents into the body to transmit sound or steer muscles if used with high power lasers. You dont even need a laser, this can be done with ordinary light and heat radiation as well. The double slit experiment mostly is done with an ordinary light source.
The next step is setting up automated defence perimeter with machine guns.
Civil application could be automated vermin control.
Another application: prison without fences. To prevent Inmates throwing each other outside the perimeter there should be a wide "do not move zone" where all prisoners has to go back or stay where they are. If someone is thrown outside the perimeter he could stay safely in the "don't move zone" until the guards show up.
1:26 I stand corrected about the uses of this technology. It still requires special reflective surface in order to work. The mosquito would have to pass between the laser and the reflective fence and be close enough to cast a shadow on it.
If that is the case then it is not different then the currently available electrical mosquito killers that attract bugs with light.
The necessity of reflective surface makes it difficult to implement in the real world and limits it uses and range. Further restriction is that the bug has to be positioned in such way that it would cast a shadow on the surface when the green laser hits it.
As far as the recognition software goes, perhaps it is based on SwisTrack or similar plus some adjustments to measure the bugs.
A step forward towards what? They announce it as a great leap while it is more of a clever trick.
As cool as frying the little bastards mid-air is, I think I'm actually blown away by how well that thing can track them and how it can pretty much instantly determine males from females from across the room.
Also, the tracking monitor looked similar to EVE Online combat.
@dogmusher nah the lasers only give off enough energy to kill a mosquito if u stay in front of the laser lets say 1 hour then u might start to feel a little burn but thts pretty much it
Is it just me, or does anyone else get excited at the thought of having one of these twatting mozzies in the back garden? Maybe even have a little smoke machine going so you can see the beams firing out. So cool.
So let me get this straight. This is a machine that can pin point a specific target, then decide if it lives or dies. I wonder what would happen if they cranked it to 11.
I love that almost everyone who decided to comment probably didn't watch the video, the girl clearly says this does not have a killing function, that laser literally follows and aims a camera that can determine sex, wing speed, an speciman and that data is captured and used. Th camera guy actually asks if this is killing mesquitos and the gal says they they don't even have a kill laser.
I just don't know in what ways parasitic creatures are benficial in this planet.
I mean seriously, in what symbiotic or mutual way does the mosquito help the environment or another creature?
The only thing it does do is carry diseases and viruses from one to another, which only insignificantly helps in ameliorating the resistence of the immune system of w/e being affected.
However, the numbers lost, then those prevailing is greater. Mosquitos can be gone, PERIOD.
Mosquitos are common carriers of diseases and viruses such as Dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever etc that took many children's lives in poorer countries... don't worry this machine won't have the power to extinct all mosquitos in the world - it is meant for keeping them out of your homes.

@pitamandan they didn't used a killing laser because all the mosquitoes will be dead in less than a minute.
they have to keep them flying for all the duration of the ted expo ,
a killing laser is not a big deal , the impressive stuff is the tracking system
