  • God I hare Ewoks

  • The prequels were all godawful dreck.

  • Well at least Lucas did well with Red Tails

  • I love Willow

  • I actually liked the first edition of the clone of wars. But the new clone wars edition sucked.

  • lucas and movies of the 80s wich were terrific generaly involve secular humanism values with dry humor. from the 60s through the mid 80s great movies had some sense of value other than mindless voilent special effects fiasco with stories created by people like rod serling and gene rodenberry introducting secular humanism values in films. i think star wars started to suck with jedi when lucas realized star wars was a toy machine and plummeted further with the prequel trilogy.

  • I think the character of anakin is very annoying. He is not well written on these prequels. He was just a cocky and impulsive kid turning to psycho.

  • @kwanlifu The transformation of Anakin to Vader would have been satisfying if Lucas could have invested any audience empathy with his original character. Instead, Anakin is portrayed by 1. the most annoying child actor EVER, and 2. the most wooden, unconvincing dimestore dummy of an actor EVER..His character actually improved by becoming an evil monster.

  • I was at the Regency Theatre Westwood, CA premier of "Phantom Menace" in '99. So many Star Wars geeks - camped out, dressed up, and ready for movie goodness. The roar at the opening sequence was deafening. Then, slowly, it all came apart. There was polite applause at the end with lots of questions and murmurs. May 19, 1999 - the day that Star Wars started to suck.

  • Hey everybody - (re)watch "American Graffiti." Now there's an excellent movie, featuring believable, likable characters plus superb editing.

All the male characters are alter-egos of Lucas. Dreyfuss and Howard as the Lucas he wanted to be, Martin as the Lucas he feared he was sometimes and Lematt as the Lucas he could have been.

Personally I think that since working on the OT ruined his personal life (divorce, health) he couldn't care less about it. It was and is just a milkcow after that.

  • George Lucas can't seem to write tragedy well and shies away from the truly monstrous. He could show an entire planet being blown to bits by the Death Star but not the attack on the jedi temple and Anakin's massacre of the jedi cadets. Doesn't mind showing cute Ewoks getting massacred though, which should be a regular feature in all Star war movies.

  • Well - in THX 1138 there were some well done segments about police brutality that didn't shy away from anything. Lucas used to be able to do this stuff.

  • @mokwella Yeah, Lucas's THX 1138 was pretty bleak. The 60's sci fi movies were pretty pessimistic about the future, Clockwork Orange, Fahrenheit 451 and the early 70's Soylent Green, Omega Man, In a way Lucas was tapping into the anxieties of 60's and 70's, nuclear destruction, the Cold war, the dehumanising effects of rampant technology, ect ect. Somewhere along the way Lucas took a turn into Pleasantville and never went back.

  • Read Garry Jenkins' unauthorized biography:: Empire Building. Lucas was not involved with the editing, directing and most of the script writing in Empire Strikes Back. When he first saw the finished cut, he was very unhappy and tried to cut it himself, making everything... Faster.

Fortunately, his creative staff talked him out of that and he grudgingly accepted Kershner's version. Perhaps it was just after THAT moment that SW started sucking. Lucas would never let go of the reins again after.

  • Well -- if we dial in closely on the Kershner thing, Lucas was also despondent that due to a ruling over how the credits were done (no names at the start of Star Wars films) both Lucas and Kershner were not allowed to keep memberships in the Director's Guild. So Hollywood helped in making Lucas even MORE of a control freak than he was.

  • The question is NOT: when did Lucasfilm start to suck? It's solely about Star Wars.

I remember that when I first watched RotJ, I was underwhelmed by the lack of pacing during the first half hour or so of the movie. There was no "Wow" moment like there is with the first two films. While that was partially compensated by Leia in slave outfit, it's still the OT's weakest part.

Then there are the abysmal cast performances and "FX over story" and we finally get to the Ewoks... It started here: RotJ

  • Hmm. No, I'd have to say when Jabba's sail barge blew up I was legitimately wowed. I don't agree the first half of ROTJ had bad pacing.

  • @mokwella

Jabba's sail barge suffered from badly executed FX at the start. In the original, watch how jerky the crew onboard move as the it sails over the dunes. So when it blew up I was more relieved than impressed.

Even though it may have seemed to last that long, it wasn't the first half of RotJ. RotJ also features two lethal enemies that both suffer an embarrassing and shameful death/exit: Boba Fett and the Stormtroopers.

Stormtroopers = hero cannonfodder ok, but Ewoks = heroes!?

  • Interesting analysis.

  • The first moment was in the special edition when greedo shot first, you did not realize what just occured until a few seconds passed and you said to yourself Waaaaaaiitamint! What the hell just happened? The deal was sealed when han walked over Jabbas back-gag. I did not go to empire or Jedi SEs after that. I think the thing about Jar Jar is that while watching EP1 your subconcoius mind realized long before you ever admitted it to yourself that Jar jar the annoying CG character was the only hu

  • 1997. The Special Editions were the start of it.

  • When I was a kid watching starwars on tv or vhs I used to imagine Anakin Skywalker as a really cool x-wing pilot wearing one of those orange jump suits and with big 70's mutton chop side burns. He was like a combination of Luke Skywalker and Han solo. He was awesomeness epitomized.

Turns out he was just an annoying little kid who grew up to be a creepy, whiny psychotic. Thanks George.

  • George Lucas is fucking delusional

  • I agree. They could have portrayed the Jedi as something more noble, people that don't stick their nose into the political atmosphere of the Republic all the time. The original movies were magical, fantastic. If you ask me, they could have portrayed Anakin as a late adolescent in the Phantom Menace, working like a slave at some kind of mine (hard childhood, hence anger, duh), it would have made more sense. And what on Earth did Lucas think when he came up with this midi-chlorian idea?

  • Star Wars started to suck with JEDI. It is nowhere NEAR as good as SW or TESB. It played okay when we were kids, but all of the camp, caricaturization of the characters, and fartsmith humor wore thin in adulthood. Blaming the Ewoks is just as pointless as blaming Jar Jar; tonally it is a totally different film. That said -- it got the job DONE. We thought "Will Menace be better than Jedi? As bad as Jedi? A little WORSE? Nothing could prepare for the Bantha turd to come.

  • JAR JAR!!!

  • You're wrong Mokwella Lucas was actually considering doing a shadows of the empire film. It was going to supposedly depend on how well the game/project was recieved. He even had John Williams write some new music for the game. Personally I think star wars went downhill when Lucas started getting greedy, it was also a mistake to make a new trilogy on effects alone, and tinker with the already good originals.

  • @HugovonDrax Shadows of the Empire movie ?

  • 1997 special edition is what ruined everything about Star Wars !!!

  • @JSlashPSlash2009 The Prequels did

  • Star wars never sucked and never will

  • @MyFrazzled He was talking about the prequels -_-

  • I've heard from other fans that say Star Wars started going down hill from Return of the Jedi with the Ewoks. I didn't mind the Ewoks, but I can see how its hard to believe these furry tribal creatures defeat an all powerful empire that has been around for over 2 decades.

But in my honest opinion, Star Wars really went down hill when Lucas released the Special Edition. Star Wars became so popular not because of the effects but because of the story, which is what the prequels lack.

  • Lucas is more into computer graphics and advancing technology then he is in storytelling. He didn't use the same methods with the prequels as the originals, there is so much going on in every frame of the prequels that its just too much. Lucas created something epic and then ruined. Jar Jar and the gungans were too child-like and comedic for the drama and adventure of star wars. There were humor moments within the original trilogy, but it never went out of balance like episode 1.

  • Well done sir. You have covered every single aspect of uncle George's rise to power with this video. The man really is the master of manipulation, eh?

  • It's always irked me how the blame of the prequels was put on Jar Jar's shoulders. You people gotta realize something, you could literally edit out ever scene Mr. Binks is in and you'd still be left with the same soul-crushingly bad films as before. I hate Jar Jar as much as the next person, but I hate the wasted potential that went into this insipid mess even more.

And at least the Ewoks did SOMETHING. What did the Gungans do? Act as bait for the Lego army that Anakin stopped anyway. Woo-Hoo!

  • I don't think star wars was ever good, the success it's only because they managed to do a space movie when there wasn't any, an also the ligthsabers. But on history and how they develop it's simple, very predictable and boring with flat one dimension and dull characters.

  • I think the potential for a junk film was there the whole time. It just depends on how many reins are on Lucas. With Episode IV and V there was Gary Kurtz and other producers and writers editing and nit picking at every aspect of the films, turning them into something which had both artistic appeal and would sell. Episode V was directed by Irvin Kershner, and really showed the potential of Star Wars under a mature director. You get the idea.

    What do you think?

  • Absolutely - I completely agree. The first cut of Star Wars did suck, and there were constant rewrites of the script. Ultimately, in post production the film was saved with John Dykstra's fantastic special effects, Marcia Lucas' editing talent, John William's superior score and Gary Kurtz stepping in when Lucas started having panic attacks. My hope is Lucasfilm's upcoming Red Skies will have sufficient buffers between George and the film that it may be a great film.

  • Things I hated were that blue elephant, the way some costumes were so rigid like bosk was. The ewoks.. Jar Jar, then they make him a general. Han stepping on jabbas tail. Greedo Shooting... Yoda was poorly done in menace.. They killed maul.. They never really did anything with vader in the suit. Calling vader Annie.. The little kid and all that underwater crap. Gungin battle sequence...Midiclorians.. And the fact he didn't let Irvin Kirshner direct everything after empire. I wished it was darker

  • I would say it started to suck when Lucas re-released The New Hope in the theaters before the prequels. My thought was, anybody else would actually have to come up with an original story. If I as Brian Dean released a movie where the plot was some farmer dude learns some ancient religion, finds out the evil guy is his father, and so forth, everybody would criticize me for ripping off Star Wars. But George Lucas doesn't have to do that. All he has to do is re-release the same movie.

  • (continued)

If all he has to do is re-release it, then it will never end. In the 90s he claimed that when he originally released it he didn't have CGI. Now that he has CGI he can now do things he couldn't do in the 70s. So, all he has to do is wait until SOMEONE ELSE comes up with an original technology, then re-release it again. If somebody invents quantum pixelation for example he can say "Well in the 90s we didn't have quantum pixelation. Now that we have QP, I want to re-release it.

  • Star wars the Phantom menace was the most disappointment since my son.

    Plikket; redlettermedia

  • I started hating Lucas when the remastered Star Wars came out with special CIG additions. All the additions were totally gay, goofy and poorly done. It was like watching someone piss on the Mona Lisa. I did think the second half of Jedi was gay as shit; but at least the first half was fucking awesome like the rest of the series up until that point! Also, I thought it was dumb to make Leia Luke’s sister (didn’t we just go through that with Luke and Vader). All the new Star Wars sucked ass!

  • Actually you know you make a good point. I remember watching Return of the Jedi and thinking it was really awesome right up until Leia got up from falling off the bike and met the little Ewok. But I forgave the rest of the movie because I liked the final sequence with the Emperor Vader and Luke.

  • @mokwella Lucas had a TON more control over ROTJ than the first two... hence why ESB is cited as the best of the 6 and ROTJ had a... questionable end (Ewoks and care bears? wtf)

  • @mdstalla

Gotta agree with you. Can you imagine what people's reaction would be if Da Vinci were to say "When I did the Mona Lisa, I didn't have a computer with subpixel editing. Now that I have a computer with subpixel editing I want to redo the Mona Lisa as I originally envisioned it." ? As I said before, when would that end? In 2012 they discover automated CGI "Well in 1997 we didn't have automated CGI. Now that we have it, I would like to redo The New Hope"

  • @elzoog Yup..if it aint on fire; don't piss all over it!

  • Star Wars is awesome from top to bottom, this includes The Phantom Menace, just because of Darth Maul.

  • JAR JAR SAVED THE SERIES YOU NERDS

    IT WASN'T GOOD WITHOUT HIM

  • @zenhatesyou yeah some of it would hev taken to seriously without jar jar.

  • I can guarantee you had the Ewoks just been a part of the movie and didnt overthrow the empire then people would have thought much much more higly of ROTJ.

Star wars ruined once Lucas got full reign over making the movies, aka Phantom Menace. Theres no special effects, just CGI, and its all overdone action scenes punctuated by "plot" (or two characters sitting on a couch boringly talking about some nonsensical plot). There, thats the death of star wars

  • its fun to just watch the original trilogy, and MAYBE episode 1. ep. 2 and 3 can go f*ck themselves (i bet sooo many people are gonna ask why i added the *)

  • the moment it started to suck was with return of the jedi. everything went wrong. unknown and still unknown work for hire director, replacing the wookies with ewoks, the creepy incest revelation of luke and leia, the emperor being switched over to a new actor, no new planets, old grumpy harrison ford as han solo, han solo being revived when he should have died, etc.

  • It started to suck at episode 2. Ep 2 and 3 is over the top riddicules. Its a showoff with jedis jumpig around like bunnies, riddicules ship/vehicle designs and boring, boring story. Anakin is a hateful ignorant wreck from the first scene in ep 2, Padmé had changed personality completely, in ep 1 she was very stiff and polite, in ep 2 she was a whole differnt person. Endless pointless showoff battles until Anakin turn the clones against the jedis. It falls flat and you dont care about any them.

  • Watched the animated series The Clone Wars, it was far better than the last 3 star wars movies Lucas made. George lucas should just produce and leave the actual movie making to others.

  • I'm kinda happy I got to watch Star wars yeard later. Star wars wasn't on my mind until I became 20, I was born in 1985, so yeah. I sat down and watched it, boy, the 2 first movies where way better than the prequels, I kinda liked the last one, where he finally becomes Darth vader, but, kinda drag, he kills his wife, I don't really think he felt anything for her, it was more like, I own you dog, kinda away. Anyway, great video, brings back some memories!

  • This really explains how Star Wars went from being much loved to much maligned. It also clarifies in my mind that as a franchise it's ruined beyond repair. After all Lucas can't unmake the phantom menace now, the damage has been done which is fine by me because the good star wars is a part of history and the bad star wars is comedy material so it all works out in the end.

  • Great work on your video. No matter what, the original trilogy will always be considered great. I think the problem lies with Lucas. He needs to understand that the Star Was audience isn't just little kids. I actually think Lucas should just let other people run with their ideas, and sit back and take credit for it. Lucas should just advise and have approval, but not write/direct.

  • wow, you sure know what you're talking about. I totally agree in every bit of what you said. And I think Lucas should have done Shadows of the Empire instead of the new Clone Wars (but please, not as director), the book was awesome, it could be an awesome movie, I liked the game, too

  • Thats not Rendars ship thats an imperial landing craft. Rendars ship can be seen leaving Mos Eisly latter in the movie.

  • Lol Padme looks hot @ 1.28 and Anikan looks like his lightsaber is turned on and in her Pit of Carkoon if you get what im saying :P

  • Episode VI: ROTJ wasn't a bad movie, it was a good movie, but it wasn't a great movie.

  • Yep - I agree with you there. Star Wars didn't start to suck until after that.

  • @mokwella

I think your points are great in this but, is it true that the ewok planet used to be the wookie planet? oh george why....I don't hate ewoks but still....

I just have to ask...do you think star wars can jump back? I mean some of the novels dealing with where luke and the others are now are pretty good but I'm worried it's going to die, somehow.

anyway great points and I find myself agreeing with you on when star wars started to go downhill.

  • @20thCenturyVole ROTJ is my personal favorie

  • interesting but well from what u said it sounds more like it was simply inebatable that star was would become what it is today and i honestly think it can still make a good comeback and is still hanging in there reguardless of everything.

  • Thanks for the comment. I don't think it was inevitable that Star Wars would decline, and I actually think Star Wars could still bounce back. In my mind, a reconciliation between George and the fans (pehaps starting with Seth Green?) is a necessary first step.

  • @mokwella yeah i think i would agree i was just thinking thought one thing that could help star wars is to do something thats not just aimed at kids books or games. like right now i feel like thats all star wars is and i think they should try something else like mabye create a tv show set passed even the expaneded univsese like 1000 years after retrun of the jedi or something

  • Well, I guess the best thing I can suggest is to watch the Red Letter media review of Phantom Menace on YouTube. It's long, but it explains in detail where the movie failed to meet the basic requirements of strong scriptwriting.
