While working at a bike shop back in the 80's this guy came in and asked if I could fix his flat tire that punctured while on a ride. He said he wasn't from the area and asked for directions to another town . After fixing his flat I drew out a map for him. After thanking me he asked if I liked Doug and The Slugs. I said yes. He said, "I'll leave you a couple of tickets at the front door for the show we're playing tonight". He then rode away. It was the keyboardist Simon Kendall.
haha this is one of those Canadian bands where, if you were born in the 80s, you've never ever heard of them before but you know the song's chorus off by heart somehow.
This video shows that everything will b e alright in your sex life if you bring a bunch of guys in it, then kindnap your girl in the shower and rape her at a motel. What, was Charlie Sheen directing this?
This was a pretty cool song. I remember the words. Didn't realize this was a Canadian act! Not that they would have come to my town, anyway!!! Awesome, they're Canadian, though, eh???
i love how u can see her through the glass wetting her hair then its dry next scene. how do people no realize that if they were in the shower then they should get wet for the next shot
Doug once told me that he made all of his money off of this song when he sold it as a vacuum commercial. Sadly, the band doesn't own the rights to this recording of the song - so when you buy "greatest hits," it's a redo.
No clue how this band was not more successful, they have a ton of great songs. They are like a cross between Huey Lewis and the News and the Talking Heads.
Ya they also played under different names around VANCOUVER so their managers wouldn't get it most of their money, ya died in Calgary @ 50 or so....TOO BAD.
hello i am the the one who named doug and the slugs band , I am from b.c. new misnister b.c 506 garfield st off of grey st the family of Doug i named the Doug and the slugs after me. According to a heyboardist I recently met in Victoria, a promoter has asked them to regroup, ala the movie "Still Crazy". Tour plans are supposedly in the works
Some promoter wants to regroup the remaining members(actually not just the members, but the entire musicians) and see what they can come up with for a tour.
Thanks for posting this video... BTW - you do realise that there was SOMETHING before the beginning of the vid in form of a profane proto-infomercial for erectile dysfunction. Classic.
I was fortunate to to book the band a couple of times, in Alliston Ontario and Wasaga Beach. Doug personified entertainment and the band was good as any live. It is too bad that todays musicians could not witness what a live show should be like.
We used to go see these guys whenever they played at the Ontario Place Forum. Was singing this with a bunch of the 'girls' just two weeks ago - having some fun memories at an old-skool diner.
If you live in Trenton and don't remember the Dutch or Doug being there, then you are you or you didn't get out much. I think he played there two nights.
Very underated Bar Bands.
I heard he came from money but wanted to prove to his family that he could make it on his own.
I lived in Trenton, Frankford and Roseland Acres area from 1981 to 1988. Loved Trenton. Most Strip clubs per capita then most cities.
Dutch was 1 of 4 strip clubs then.
$10.00 bucks to see doug and the slugs.
He actually came up behind me and tapped me on the shoulder as I had my back to him singing. I turned around and he opened my eye lids as I was hammered. I think he was telling me to sit down and watch the show. I guess it was kind of rude for me to have my back to them.lolololol
man thats crazy trenton now is known for most teen pregnancy and drug use!! but is it stating to get better. man you so lucky i bet that show was kick ass
Thats too bad. Trenton was a good place to live when there was 15,000 military people to boost the economy. I have alot of civilian friends still there. I guess I won't work there as an OPP with my family.
The Dutch Mill !!!! I was born and raised in Belleville. I worked the club scene here in Vancouver during Doug's hay day, and had the pleasure of working with him on a number of occaissions. He was a great guy to hang out with, and those of us who really knew him, still shed a tear when we hear one of his gems on the radio. RIP Mr. Bennett
Doug died October 16, 2004 in Calgary. He lapsed into a coma and never came out. An official cause of death was never released, but Doug had been sick for quite awhile. He had fallen upon hard times, which didn't do much for his health. He had been reduced to sitting on a chair onstage as he wasn't able to stand up for long. A terrible end for someone who had given so much to all of us.
I love this sound,I am planin on going back into toronto see some friends and buddy who is a drummer. If i could would move to toronto real nice vibe. This style of music is good highway driven!
It was filmed in 1982 at the Roxy Cinema, on the corner of Naniamo and Hastings Street, in Vancouver. The Roxy is long gone. It was torn down, and a RBC branch sits there now.
OMG.. I JUST found out from reading these that Doug B died in Calgary 3 yrs ago, RIP Doug, a part of the 80's died with you , GREAT nights with my first gfriend at the KEE to Bala and Ontario Place !!

I remember singing along as a kid and never realizing what the song was about...haah....

Best memory of this song:
Convincing my dad that there was a group called Doug and the Slugs.
It took days of light teasing and dumb adolescent pranks but it was fun and after he saw this video on the New Music, he believed.
