  • I would like to know the proper method for skiing moguls the size of a VW minivan. The moguls in every YouTube video I've seen are made by expert skiers skiing fast and straight. The ones I'm talking about are made by intermediate skiers and riders who piece their way down the mountain so they carve the hell out of the backside leaving only ice and increase both amplitude and period to the point you can barely see the next one when you're in the trough. You need 14' legs to absorb these!

  • @PMitchy72 Yup agree, all these moguls are too perfect and dont seem to be on steep runs really. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to ski like that on the stuff im used to

  • @PMitchy72 Yeah, the bumps on many slopes at typical resorts are definitely not well formed. I just slow up when the back-sides of the bumps are completely chopped off, and I'll ski between the moguls until I find decent sections that can be skied like in videos such as this.

  • @jtomasik If anyone didnt know yet, the best place to look for good bumps to ride is (in my experience) under chairlifts when they pas through tresections. Its generaly very steep and quite big bumps. Take a look next time you go skiing, wach out for litle treestumps that can stab you if you fall.

ONLY TRY IT IF YOUR A VERY VERY GOOD SKIER!!! DANGER DANGER DANGER!!!

  • yea i've been learning to ski the moguls like this. it actually helps stamina and i can go for longer periods of time without feeling the burn as bad. i find i can control my speed by scraping sorta on the backside of the mogul when i am extending. but apparently in the olympics you lose points for this and should control your speed with you crunches into the moguls, idk how that works cause i just keep going faster doing it that way

  • Rides it like a boss!

  • I was never able to keep the skies so close together, when I tried this. They would always cross, LOL.

  • Knee destruction

  • These guys are all good. I especially like it when the pace is played with, i.e. the skier slows it down than speeds up, then back down again. It shows control and ability.

  • where i ski the moguls trails are icy at the turns. i can't extend my legs well. so i usually just go directly over the next mogul. tips?

  • @rshenster try hockey stopping into each mogul, if you can' extend well (but practice it until you can) try skiing the bumps with a different technique or method

  • pfft my bumps vid is every bit as good.

  • Carving in the bumps?!? Brilliant!!!

  • i Snowboard And Despise Moguls!!! :^D

  • great skiing. just a little backseat, but not by much

  • how long will your knees last? jeez....

  • I'm really still trying to learn the mogul runs. I just got back into skiing seriously 2 years ago after stopping for about 12 yrs. Any videos out there that are good?

  • moguls are hard shit ! lmfao me and some friends went to blue mountain last season and every time we got off this one lift we would go one way and be like.. ooh ya the other way is the moguls dont go that way. turns out every single time we somehow end up at the top of a huge ass motherfuckin mogul hill and theres no goin back. lmao it was brutal. everyone stopped at the top of this one mogul hill and just stood there think... SHIT !

  • @SSerrbody im guessing if that happened you didnt really want to be on it lol, go to mary jane at winter park, best bumps in the west

  • @snowyphil65 noooo ! haha im not pro enough for moguls yet and i use trick ski's :P but ya ill look into that

  • @SSerrbody haha, better start puttin in more days, and get a pair of skis, skiblades are good for testing your balance and making you more aware of fore/aft balance but skis change your turning technique completley. lessons would be helpful too

  • @SSerrbody what run was that ive been looking for moguls at blue but the only ones i found were the ones that were made by the people scarping the snow at the run next to the park

  • @uRbattyboy um it wasnt next to the park, it was the six seater lift and it was right after that and down the trail but you can either turn left onto like a trail hill or keep going straight. keep going straight and thats where they were lol. this was also last season so im not sure if its changed.

  • looks like some of these guys are about to bail at any second

  • Notice that in the case of the real artists, their skis never leave the snow.

  • bad for your knees xD

  • I felt the skier in red at around 3:30 to 3:50 accomplished all of the parameters the best.

  • A good 'bucket list', but I would add; 8, Keeping the skis on the snow, and 9, Speed control.

  • some of this is real skiing but when the knees jut up like they are going to hit you in the chin THATS a mistake. A bad line chosen, a reaction instead of a pro action, poor anticipation (it's tough because of all the crappy three sided pyramid ice moguls, they should be the shape and size of VW beetle's to be really fun) and that's why the slower smoother skiers look better and are having more fun.

pick a wider more random line mix it up, pick your head up, look down hill and anticipate.

  • keep your legs floppy and try to predict the powders next move, its skier vs. moguls and you are gonna win, but you wont beat down the mogul, you thank it for the fight and be on your way

  • @chill579 you dont want your legs floppy you want them reactive, absorb on the front of the mogul push down the backside keeping maximum contact, damn this is old school style

  • @phil656565 This isn't "old school." It's just rounder, more carved-type turns than what competition bump skiers do. with comp. bump skiers you see little to no knee or hip angulation. On these guys you see both because their turns are way more-carved and less skidded than comp. bump skiers. These guys get their skis out from underneath way them better than comp. bump skiers. These guys are way better "all mountain" skiers than most comp. bump competitors.

  • @onemangarageband ive seen a whole rounder skidded turns in moguls, check out the long poles headbands and green goggle frames, thats old school, not saying theyre not all great skiers, because they obviously are but some of them are skiing old school, farther back in the stance, arms a little farther out on pole plants than whats "stylish" gotta agree that competition bump skiers are getting weak, the line is direct and they dont really even turn, need to go back to skier made bumps

  • To me, a somewhat slower pace keeping the skis on the snow at all times, would make it even more artistic and beautiful.

    GRAT skiing!!

  • I agree. This is much nicer and more artistic that what is seen in the Olympics. To me, Olympic mogul skiing is 'fake skiing'. This is real skiing.

    Mogul SKIING vs. mogul-banging.

  • First: For everybody saying that these guys are in the "back seat" and/or to "get forward"--you are incorrect. None of these guys are in the back seat. They are all centered and well balanced. When they hit the front side of the bump they flex ankle, knee and hip joints, and, yes, the hips go back. But when they extend down the backside of the bump the hips come right back up over the feet. This is fantastic bump skiing and prettier than comp bump skiing.

  • Ah. This is real skiing... a dying art.

  • lol that'd be fun on a snowboard

  • @TrIcKsTeR6009 Snowboarders can't do this

  • ive seen people do it on a snowboard, not on moguls the complex or whatever but they've done it

  • true their kinda oldschool but using the carving technique on moguls wont get u that far

  • Note that their skis are tight together - ye olde Austrian style - and not the looser modern American style with the carving skis 40cm or so apart.

  • @uniqueStephen you cant carve in moguls

  • God I miss it. And yes even old people had whole knees once!

  • all of their poles look a bit too long for moguls

  • do you swap out your poles every time you go out for a bump run? :s

  • @Kingmeri no i struggle more than you should have to like they do

  • whenever i do this this burns my thighs lol...idk y

  • Does anybody know who the first skier is?

  • I think its Martin Gugganig. (RIP)

  • I thought it might be.

  • try this with telemarkskis and you know what real pain is!

  • tight pants really help...and bright headbands

  • LOL, poles too long is right!! That's why the bones in my wrists speak 7 different languages now!

  • @SnojetSteve nice

  • haha looks kinda painful. Still, I wish I knew how to ski moguls like this...

  • Back seat

  • I love this video. I'm a little confused by the comments about being dated. Skiing like this was fun as hell 30 years ago, so why wouldn't it be fun now? The only problem is that it makes my back hurt more now than it did before. Then again, I still ski with straight skis, blue jeans and gaiters, so I guess I'm just an old fart, and cheap.

  • Hi: I think these clips show fast direct skiing on steep bumps.

Love the soundtrack too. Whatever era. The guys are skiing at an excellent level.

As for the comments "lean forward in bumps" seen above. "leaning forwards" should not be a technical focus. Why? Because the legs have to come up in front. If lean forward reduces the range of leg movemant available.

    Turn-shape, Looks round to me.

Best mogul-ski dvd. Still "Fistful of moguls"!

    Davey

  • dude. your really good. but literally ALL of your weight is in the back seat!!! If you want more control, start leaning forward!!!

  • @smittybuffmoma Their are fifteen different people. I suggest you go in the bumps and ski like this, and see how forward you are

  • i have never seen anyone take moguls like this in person. but i do quite enjoy going on the ski lift that goes over the moguls just to see people fall...

  • HAH! bendtheski stole the words right out of my mouth.

It's strong skiing, but the long poles are a problem.

  • Wow! I thought my mogul videos were dated!!! Cut the poles, get out of the back seat and quit breaking at the waist!

  • no kidding these old vids LOVVE the back seat..they must have thighs and back of steel haha

  • hey imezru69878 aren't turns supposed to be round, otherwise you are just traversing and zig zagging? sorry i must be being thick.

  • Everything is nice with this kind of tune :)

    @ Zl4life

Old-school skiing still has the best looks

  • how old is the video??? bumps should not be skied like this now days

  • I still consider this the best mogul skiing compilation on youtube. Does anyone know of DVDs with nothing but mogul skiing, competitions etc etc?

  • poles toooooo looonnnng

  • Is there anyone that can tell us who these skiers are and maybe the names of the various DVDs these clips were taken from so we can buy them for ourselves.

  • The guy in red jacket and grey pants, whoever he is, clearly stands head and shoulders above the rest. next time on the mountain I am going to emulate his technique to impress the girls ... :) great vid btw, post more of these guys if you can get more, even if you have to rip it off that other guy

  • Same here. I would like to buy this DVD as well. I have been watching this clip more than 20 times a day to analize and learn how they execute their skills in the bumps. I am changing my bump skills as these bupm skiers do. They are just amazing!!!!!

  • I made this vid as visualization for instructors and trainers who work for me. It is a compilation from many different DVD, many only available in Japan. This is not for sale.

  • Comment removed

  • Would you please do us a big favor and give us the titles of the various DVDs that were used to compile the footage? Its not difficult to buy DVDs that are available in other countries.

  • Does anyone know what DVDs these clips are from? They are great and I'd like to buy them.

  • By the way, skiracecoach (whoever you are) ripped this vid off me.

  • These Japanese guys are very good, but Berger blows them out of the water. The skiing they do with extreem diflection is during an event with man made bumps, designed to allow for diflection to that extent. Put Berger in the same bumps and he too will show "extreem diflection". I challenge "usd1991" to post any better...we may be waiting a while!

  • Man-Made bumps=good. [8)^\\

  • I am a ski instructor(PSIA) in USA. This is amazing bump skiing. Mr. Maruyama in yellow pants is totally breathtaking. Look at his aggressive CM movement from side to side. I would say Maruyama's skiing style becomes standard for modern bump skiing anytime soon. As such, I am going to teach my students these skills. Thank you very much for posing this video.

  • seen better buts its ok :P

  • dang nice i can only keep up that pace for about a minute before my legs start burning so bad i have to take a break

  • By the way, is the one skiing with red jacket and grey pants Mark?

  • I guess those who ski bumps with extreme deflection (ex)Takao Maruyama on Japanese tech champ in yellow pants but not Richard) is one of the most radical example of recent technical bumps skiing.

One common thing I found is that their COM is alwais "following" BOS without prenty of visible separation or counter rotation.

  • good skiing but more to moguls than skiing the rut ski over the tops and dictate your own turns instead of the run telling you where to turn. Make your own turns every where not just the ruts you are avoiding the moguls ski over the tops.

  • Hey Cordeu! I bought your SVMM vid. Really inspirational. However, my young mates weren't too convinced.

I hope to come to Sun Valley next season.

    All the best Dave

  • This is a great example of Bumps Skiing. They show great deflection form side to side.

  • This is great skiing. Most everyone's poles are way too long. These skiers remind me of Steve Desovich back in the 80's - rippin' and can literally ski about anything.

  • Richard Berger *is* a ski god.

  • Richard Berger (yelow pants) may be the greatest skier of all time.

  • Hannes Rottensteiner and Richard Berger are truely inspirational. The best skiers!!

  • i rated yours so now u can rate mine :)

    'hedgehogforever' thnx
