@crenglandisascam Now most trucking companies treat their drivers very well, It costs about $10,000 for each new driver, after background checks, hiring and orientation. Bad business for them to abuse their drivers, due to driver shortages, we can get a job with another company anywhere in the country in 3 days on average
I love the Mack Hood Ornament, its very stand out and classy. I dont care for the exterior styling though. But hey, all Mack look like shit. Their interiors are nice.
I drive an autoshift and I miss the manual most of the time. City driving is simplified greatly but I really miss the manual shifter in the mountains.
I have a fully auto truck and i hate it. It has a manual mode and a paddle shifter on the right side of the steering. up shift up down shift down. I use that most of the time. Waits too long to downshift and sometimes it waits wayyyy too long to upshift. when your empty i always runs through all the gears, no skip shifting here. i can't complain too much, fleet truck and i have 2 y left with this one and then i get a new one, they are elased. Big boss talking about going back to sticks YYYAYYY
That noise you hear is the air tanks dumping condensation that has built up with in tanks.
As the truck draws air from the atmosphere, it usually has moisture in it ,and under pressure the moisture seperates, builting up at the bottom of the main air tank.
You used to have to pull a cable that opens a drian cock on a regular baisis to drain the water, but this system does it automatically, at set intervals and thats what you are hearing
On the bigger trucks, they only have full air brake system, they also have multiple tanks, generally the first tank from the compressor catchs most of the liquid.
On a Truck that has full air, Air pressure is needed to RELEASE brakes, At each wheel there are brake chambers, 6-7 inch round, easily seen from the rear of the truck mounted on the axle.
Popular myth is that truck need air pressure to stop, The brake chambers have a spring in them and when the air preusser drops, brakes come ON
thats not completely correct, the air releases the emergency brake which is large spring inside the brake chamber, if air presssure drops below 50-0psi the spring brake wil come on automatically, but actuall braking while driving is done by air pressure from second brake chamber thats on the other side. On most trucks only one drive axle has an E brake, both trailer axles have them, the steering axle does not have one... they did not used to even have regular brakes on the steers.
Thanks for the detailed info, I was keeping it simple.
FYI most of the Euro stuff have maxi's on the steer aswell,
In Australian nearly ALL of the American sourced truck have maxi's on both drive axle's and have done from the early 70's 24/30's mainly, there are plenty 30/30's around.
You said that they didn't used to have brakes on the steer, You might be letting on how old you really are LOL
I had a diaphragm blow out on a trailer spring brake chamber once. That end of that axle locked up and skidded until I got the truck stopped on the shoulder. I tend to suspect that if I released all the air from the spring brake chambers while going down the road, that'd be the end of rotation for the tires involved. Maybe not the end of forward motion, but I'd have 16 tires locked up and sliding. That is, if the brakes are adjusted properly...
In europe only the parking brakes work like that.. The normal brakes that you operate with your brakepedal only work with airpressure.. So you cant move the truck unless you have around 7-8 bar because of the parking brakes. if you have a fail in your airsystem only the axles with the parking brakes on them will activate..
In addition the most compressors on a truck work continuously , so when the air tanks reach their set maximum pressure it blows of some air aswel.. Its not just for the moisture.. If you're driving on the highway for a couple of 100 KM's or Miles your airsystem would have burst by then and you grind to a halt..
nice truck there

I drive a Mac, and POS Petes, KW, IN, and Freightshakers break quick on the oil-patch lease roads. The Mac's are made for those environments.
Likewise OTR I wouldn't want a Mac, but would want a Pete, KW, or FL.

yeah but that spring wont stop a loaded truck going down a mountain. In fact it would take a while for a truck to stop even on level ground
