Not all Somalians are ruthless, I know that, but it wraps around the northeastern part of Africa, right next to a shipping lane with valuable cargo going through at any given moment. It's easy money for them since the crews are unarmed. Why try to even think of praying to God and think of a way to rationally deal with the situation? Do what the Indian Navy did this past week and sink those turds.

Have a lawless, very poor nation in a state of civil war next to a very busy shipping lane and piracy is bound to occur. It isn't practical to arm civilian sailors, partly for legal reasons. There is not enough of a naval presence to stop piracy simply by firing on all suspected pirate vessels, and enough of a backlash has been created in Pakistan from civilian deaths without a repeat in Somalia. Escorting convoys of civilians is impossible due to lack of war ships.

Sorry but I don't agree with you when you say it isn't practical to arm civilian sailors. If these sailors were armed, this kind of thing would decrease significantly. I'm all for having civilian sailors at least trained on how to use weapons.

For example, on a cruise ship, where at least two thousand people can be sailing at any given time, there are usually only two or three security officers who have access to a weapon, a mere pistol or so. Arm the crew and the pirates will retreat.

Permission would have to be obtained from wherever the ship docked and confirmed each time, creating delays. Some countries might not allow it at all. Civilian sailors do not expect to be part time soldiers, and even if they were prepared to be trained, a large financial outlay would be necessary. Putting arms in the hands of large numbers of civilians would also risk mistakes. Finally, the arms would have to be abandoned when the ship left the dangerous area, for the above reasons.

Somalia has been a lawless zone for decades. Some entrepreneurial Somali figured out that piracy was his/her best bet, and they've made a fortune off the instability (because the red sea is an important trade route and has been for centuries). They've been in the papers for months. Not to mention, a million dollars ransom and loot is a pretty good reward for buying a boat and AK47s, even if you have to split it a few ways.
