i believe that couples can be happily unmarried. i'm a woman, and i do not believe in marriage--and yes, i am happily in a long-term relationship. marriage is a spirit-killer for both men and women. but so many people just blame the woman for everything...i agree that women go crazy, but it takes 2 to tango. i'm pretty independent and don't expect for my man to pay for everything, in fact, we argue about paying for things. marriage has become a circus, and the wedding a show. it's un-sexy!!

I think marriages should have expiration dates. I am not kidding, just like car leases or any other board memberships or licenses that we obtain and given the option to renew it or just let go of it. Think about it, say that 3 years (depending on the state that you live) and if you are still happy together, you renew it for another 3. Without the enormous financial drag factor of supporting a woman, I've paid off my home and all my debts and now all my regular expenses (gas, food, utilities, insurance, everything) is only 30% of my take home pay. The remaining 70% is available for investments or whatever I happen to want. It's an awesome way to live. You people have just gotten to dangerous and expensive to marry so you'll have to get along without me.

Your situation certainly happens, but its the exception rather than the rule. Why? Because marriage laws are highly biased towards the female gender. Majority of divorce cases will benefit the woman, NOT the man. I mean how many men win alimony? Answer: very few! So although your situation definitely SUCKS! Its by no means representative of the majority of cases out there. Since its NOT the majority, your warning is not necessary. But "A" for effort!

@skywriter1962 well I have to mention a few things. First off, those POS men you've been with were all chosen by YOU, so perhaps your judgement could use improvement. If they pulled the ol 'switcheroo' acting responsible, then changing to a bum, that's one thing... but there's always warning signs.. which you failed to recognize. Also, it is possible to date someone and not marry them, so you might want to try it sometime.

Marry the right woman in the first place and you won't have to worry about divorce.
I think the no fault divorce is what has caused all of this. Before, woman had to keep her man happy because it was between that and poverty, sadness, being alone.
We are set up where I could really screw my husband in a divorce. BUT I would never do that because money was not the goal of getting married. Marry the wrong woman and you men get screwed. There are many good ones out there.

@katiatomsk I find it comical that you assume the 50% of people that divorce should have known they had the wrong person at the beginning and NOT married in the first place. Hindsight is 20/20, but unfortunately this is not a perfect world and there is NO WAY to KNOW you've made the wrong decision until you've already married and hit trouble later. Thing only STRT good then change later, so the best prevention is to NOT marry at all, then you're guaranteed to avoid the pitfalls of divorce laws.

A good marriage is #1 marrying right, #2 everyone working hard to make it a good marriage, #3 everyone working as a unit to have a good family. I know this is against the grain of culture, but after all, we are not the ones complaining about our family life.

If you REQUIRE that in order to feel AUTHENTIC, then you're just another example of why marriage is a superficial "vehicle" just to make you feel committed to your "spouse". As for "marrying right"... nobody KNOWS if the made a mistake or not until they're already married, so its impossible to know 100% ahead of time.

I can see someone divorcing because of excessive abuse, cheating, etc. but I bet the majority of divorces is not because of these things. That's why every state has instilled the "no fault" divorce law because people wanted the easiest ways out for ridicules reasons for divorce. I can't wait to be an ex-patriot. I could go to Mongolia and be married and NEVER divorced because of the mentality is so different there. Marriage is all about me and not 'we' today.

Its a good thing in my book because "work" means compromise and compromise to often means tolerating things that bother you which then results in frustration and that frustration builds over time which leads to resentment. Recipe for disaster. If you have to WORK at it, then that's the wrong person. If you can't find the right person, then don't feel bad, just enjoy your life without stress and be happy. I wish my Ex-Wife had rejected my marriage proposal. Just because she wanted a man with a motorcycle left me of 10 years and took my 2yr old daughter away from me. I lost my home, my daughter, my life! I have 13 years of child support and was laid off of work last year and no one is hiring. If i do not get hired soon i will go to jail for failing to pay 400 a month for child support. Go ahead guys, marriage is great if you like being a slave and working 60 hrs a week to pay them.

I am a woman and i am not a gold digger. I want a guy to marry me because I need love. I don't plan on divorcing him, I want him to be my companion till the day I die. Without the enormous financial drag factor of supporting a woman, I've paid off my home and all my debts and now all my regular expenses (gas, food, utilities, insurance, everything) is only 30% of my take home pay. The remaining 70% is available for investments or whatever I happen to want. It's an awesome way to live. You people have just gotten to dangerous and expensive to marry so you'll have to get along without me.

There is a woman out there who was supposed to be my wife. I probably met her 20 years back. When our eyes met she was happy because I was about to say hello. Then suddenly I tore my eyes away and walked off. Instead of 50 years together we had 4 seconds. In another time and place where it's not so terribly dangerous, she and I could have had a great life together but under these conditions it's not possible. She's getting old now and is probably alone. It's really sad for her.

The practice of pushing the bill for the wife's legal fees onto the husband lowers the barrier for divorce. If women are entitled to any future earnings, men are entitled to future female services. An example would be sex. It would be great that if the divorced husband doesn't want to pay for sex with his ex-wife, she would be required to hire a substitute.
