You don't HAVE to hit a vein for it to become serious. If you get an infection from it, it's not going to matter how deeply you've cut yourself. The infection I'm referring to is evil in it progression and so hard to control that some people have been lost to it.
We treated an 11-yr. old who fell on the playground and developed the infection in question, then died from it a month later.
That's why I personally believe it's a dangerous thing to do.

It's very sad how the most gifted kids are tortured by the most shallow kids. They all need a good self esteem and quit frankly neither group does. I think it's time to reevaluate disciplin with our kids. I would bust my daughters ass if I ever found out she was picking on another kid. She is 16 now. I work in Emergency Medicine.
If she hits a vein, they have less than a half hour to get her to an Emergency Room.
Information that may or may not be helpful for people watching, who are still cutting themselves.
But, since there's a gr8 deal of pain associated w/ hitting a major vessel, hopefully it won't happen.

It's very sad how the most gifted kids are tortured by the most shallow kids. They all need a good self esteem and quit frankly neither group does. I think it's time to reevaluate disciplin with our kids. I would bust my daughters ass if I ever found out she was picking on another kid. She is 16 now. She has not been bullied but she also stands up for kids who are. I taught her that because I was a very picked on kid.
