The city of Knoxville imploded the U.S. Pavilion in 1990 or 1991. Biggest waste I've ever seen. Then later built a multi-million dollar exhibition hall that sits empty.
thanks for uploading. I don't remember the fair when it happened but I love that SunSphere. It looks so cool. It's a signature building to Knoxville in the same way the Calgary Tower is a signature building in my city
Funny if you listen to the background music its the theme to mission impossible .
I drove down to the fair as I lived in louisville ky at the time . I was 20 at the time but they let drink at all the places I wish I still had the betamax tape I took at the time .
Shortly after I went I the NAVY for 7 years on submarines I talked to a recruiter down there and he was a submarine e6 at the time .
Check out the Knoxville World's Fair story at "Bob Austin, PM Magazine" on Youtube. The story is labeled. 1982 World's Fair. A good look at the way this thing got off the ground and was promoted.
@lwsmackie4 ...Nope hasent been one since..But sunsphere is still here and will always be..The rest gone over years of downtown growth...Come and see us...As Dolly Parton says....Yall come back now..Ya hear....
I was there twice. I don't remember the robot because the lines were too long to get in. But I remember the rides and the China pavillion and the Imax theatre.
Great job on cleaning up the video! Our own family's video is pretty shot ( was stored in an attic) so its great to see the fair again. We had so much fun when we went. Thanks for putting this up here.
Actually, it timed out at 2 hours and 40 minutes. There is a 30 minute show of Up With People, about an hour of the Philippines show and 30 minutes of an orchestra. I also have video of the China exhibit (that's really neat) and highlights of other pavilions. I'll upload some of that material after I get a chance to clean up the video. Being such old technology, a lot of the video is dark. Luckily today's programs can really enhance the overall picture.
