As a composer and producer, Phil was a genius. As a human being- he's a monster. Virtually everyone who ever came into contact with him has at least one horror story about his "attitude" (and the way he packed a gun at some of his recording sessions). Ronnie, of course, suffered the worst of it by being married to him. She was lucky to get away from him alive: there's no way you could stay with someone who became as paranoid as he did, and not wind up dead.
This might be RS's best effort. Her electricity and vibrato are really in evidence when just her lead vocal track is pulled down from the mix. "Where can he be" Ouch squared. She had it all and that moment will be forever available to us via the exploits of kind folks who post this material. She is the Queen of the girl group genre, along with her sister (RIP) and cousin. Ups for posting.
Phil Spector was great for awhile there but by the late 60s I think he lost his way and finally his life became a tragedy and despite the fact that he was obviously guilty I can't help but feel sorry for him he won't be able to make in prison I've been there and although I was no tough guy I got by but Phil especially at his age? so sad I guess it's better to remember him on records like this one when he was on top PEACE
@elamite66 He was a genius, no doubt...but I've read Ronnie's autobiography and you might not feel the same way about him after reading it. ...Thanks John for posting this wonderful solo.
Been watching a lot of Ronettes today and this is the best. Shows Ronnie's real talent. These songs bring back many memories. Saw them in the 60s. These videos stop time in its tracks even though we must go on.
Yar one take so I understand, Though something I have only just noticed... if you listen at 1.54/1.55 there is an editing clitch. Wonder why that would be in one take? Though it could be the mike to control room being switched off... maybe...
she did this in ONE TAKE???? damn....and the vocal shows how you better have a great "dry" vocal take, or else adding all the reverb and echo and whatever won't mean shit.
Wow. And this is the one take they talk about. A treasure indeed. Talking of Treasure. Does anyone know if the lead singer of Bonnie and the Treasures is in fact Ronnie Spector??? I only hear rumours (UK spelling) Would love to know.
hi scriptworker, bonnie apperently wasnt ronnie, i did read somewhere who it was but for the love of... i cant think at present, if i find it i let you know
Soo cool. Would love to know as there is a little connection between me and the song put out. Not a direct connection, BUT when I heard Home of the Brave it blew me away in a real sense. I got the single and did tones of research as to where it was from and the history of the sound. There's more to it but from that one record I built my collection and knowledge/fanship based on it. Sleeve notes or some book claimed it to be Ronnie. The voice could be but my ears doubted it then and now. Thanks.
@ScriptWorker By this time you probably know the answer but after reading your question I had to scout the internet. This is what I found. Charlotte Ann Matheny who passed away in 1976 was the singer for Bonnie and the Treasures.
unsurprisingly alot of the backing track leaks through - what would you expect with the way spector recorded?! still lovely to hear the voice is such detail
