Fraser High School just played this in chicago and got a gold rating in the Heritage festival of gold an invitation only frestival, nation wide. look up their other jazz items on youtube, Fraser High School. all parts were played too. the bari soloist in are band is incredible, as well as four trumpets that can play maynards part with no problem.
Yeah this chart fuckin Rocks... I am currently studying under Denis Diblasio... PRIVATE LESSONS!!!!! I swear to god I think I have learned more than I ever have Denis Diblasio is an amazing flute playing-Bari sax Player. I remember my second lesson reading the head to Have you met miss jones and trading fours with Professor Diblasio...... GREATEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE!!!
I played the solo in Coconut champane my senior year in highschool marching band (1987) and had a workshop with their sax player. He was awesome. He played the bari sax without a neckstrap. Amazing....
I played bari sax for 6 years, and LOVED it; my fave sax. So deep, so soulful, as illustrated in this song! So happy my jazz band teacher in high school used this as a regular rotation of songs. So happy I soloed the heck out of it in numerous competitions! Brings back memories of great times, nearly 20 years ago. Wow, I'm old, LOL, but I can still "airplay" pretending I'm holding a bari like it was yesterday!
Also Gregg Bissonette on drums and his brother Matt on bass...both 100% pure class acts in very sense of the word. I really miss the days of this music....
A friend showed mw this song about a week ago and I can't stop listening to it! This is seriously my 30th time listening to it! I love this song and jazz!
You want to know whats really weird? I'm a heavy metal fan but this is just amazing!
I have met Denis, he is a fun person and a great player. He is also playing to flute you hear in the tune. He is self taught on the flute and can do amazing things with it. Try and find him doing bye bye blackbird on the flute.
I'm on my bros account but I'm a senior in jazz band playing the Bari Sax and i have the first half of his (Denis DiBlasio) solo... its awesome. I didn't know i could play something so amazing so well lol
@loopyhoops hey man, dont rag on yourself for being 3rd chair. its pretty important, depending on how you look at it. as long as people can hear you and you don't screw up alot.
I'm a Bass Bone player and i have to say this is a sick chart. when we sight read this i had to transpose the bari solo on the fly and it took me for a ride. :)
I am in the Jazz Band at my high school. I am a Bari player, and after playing Sophisticated lady last year, my teacher decided to order this piece upon my request, so we are playing it at an upcoming concert... I CAN'T WAIT!
The High School I play at has 2 Jazz Bands. I happen to be in the lower Band. Our Top Band is playing this is going to have me play the tenor 2 part for Lakeside Jazz Festival. I am so jealous of our Bari Sax player.
i hope i can get our jazz director to get this peice for next year, that bari solo is beast and i wana play it! lol GO BARI PLAYERS! though we will need stronger trumpets for it next year for a trumpet solo.
Getting to play this one on drums after meeting the drummer who played in this recording, Gregg Bissonette, was the highlight of my time as a percussionist. Gregg is a maniac on the set, people don't give him enough credit. Hearing him play live was something else. I could only hope to be half as good as he is.
@FrenchGeeksInc i just got into the jazz band into our school thinking iit will be a breeze till i saw ur message. i skipped to the end and saw my death 0_o
I love how all the highschool kids comments talk about playing the "bari part". What Denis plays in this is his original solo. LEARN TO IMPROVISE AND MAKE THE SONG YOUR OWN!
@jazzmeup62 On the other hand it's not so bad having a transcription to analyse what they do over the same chords. I do the bari part (on trombone) but do two choruses, one solo, one reading this transcription. So I think that's a fair deal.
I'm a bari sax player, and i would love to play this in my Jazz Band, i am a senior and my last real solo was my Sophmore year in high school. Only problem is is that our band teacher is afraid he will catch flak because of the reference to alcohol in the title.... Sophmore year i played Duke Ellington's sophisticated lady.... I really want to play this piece though.... DAMNIT!!
We played it last year when I was a junior and this was so much fun I loved it and so did the crowd. I don't think your director should be afraid hahaha
The Bari sax player is Denis DiBlasio--tremendously talented multi-instrumentalist from NJ--also served as Maynard's arranger and musical director for years. Sick, sick, sick---
I played bari in high school, and we did this in my junior year, in '94. The arrangement that my director had gotten had a totally different solo written in the music, so my director and I actually listened to this recording for like two days straight, and wrote the part ourselves. I used to have a recording of me playing it for a band competition in Toronto, Canada, but don't know where it got to over the years, and i gotta say, I didn't do too bad for a 16yr old kid playing the solo by ear.
¡¡ gracias !!
Yeah i just played the bari solo and i had to change it up a little my tounge is not fast enough. i've met denis deblasio and he is just ridiculously good.
I don't have the transcription, but I did play this on bari sax quite a few years ago in high school and let me tell you, getting that solo down is hell lol. A ton of fun though!

All Maynard ever does is squeal high notes. I thought it was cool at first, but it becomes annoying after awhile. If you took away Maynard's range, what would be left?
i saw them play this live in the 80's.... it sounded the same of course, just amazing!!!! Dennis Diblasio is very talented and funny too...he and Maynard had a lot of fun....thats him on flute too!!!
and the Bissenett bros on bass and drums... Steve Weist was one of the better bone players also...tight group!!!
I love this arrangement. The way the sax comes in is great. The drum part is also great. I wish our trumpet section could match up in my high school jazz band.
the bari solo on here is one of those solos you end up memorizing when you play it. i still wake up in the middle of the night fingering through the solo because i used to play it so much in high school...
everyone talks about how amazing the bari sax and trumpet solos are in this, but how about the drum part? pretty friggin insane if you ask me.....does anybody know the name of the drummer on this?
I tried all year to get my old band director to use this song. Loved it ever since I heard the Jazz Ensemble play it when I was a freshman. I even figured out that high trumpet part and played it for an entire study hall at his office.
It tops out at a f# above high C before the uber maynard stuff, which I can't do so I left it at the f#. Here's to waiting for alumni night.
btw, not for competition unless you can absolutely kill it. You need an amazing lead trumpet to pull it off. Bari too.
This isn't for every jazz band. The trumpet solo I believe starts on a G#, and slurs from a D to a high C above the staff. And then from there it's just way above anything mortal trumpeters can play, there's no fingering for any of the notes above the high D on the trumpet.

Even if you did, which I'm not saying you didn't, it doesn't matter how high your range is. It's all about control.
I've technically gone to well above the second C above the staff. Yet I'll still only say I can go up to about an A.
You can't JUST have range. you have to be able to control that range and belt it out consistently. Otherwise, you're just another squeeker.
