  • I saw them open for The J Geils band at the Saginaw Civic Center in the 70's! Awesome live band!

  • I never really cared for YES. I detested keyboard synthesires 'n such. Then I fell in Love with STYX . I picked-up the Starcastle Album in a record store because I liked the Cover of the Vinyl Album jacket. Thanks and Kudos to the graphic artist! Thanks for catching my Eye and EARS !

  • this jars some brain cells .. i saw them open up for Frampton on his Frampton comes alive tour .. helluva show . they are YES ..Kinda sorta .. thanks for the upload !

  • I have seen YES (many times) just last year with the new signer they picked up from a tribute band . Awesome . I saw Starcastle with Tull and had the albums too. Not to forget the HEEP ol Uriah Heep ! The lighters burning in the sky to chants of HEEP HEEP HEEP HEEP . The synthesizer was on springs and it rocked back and forth . Oh to be young again

  • Awesome. I loved this group when I first heard em in the 70's ....still joy em'. Thanks for sharing. I loved Yes and they make me think of them every time.

  • sorry crs.... leonakita is the dumbass.. my bad,,,,

  • crs you are a dumbass

  • my mom loves this song woo-hooo

  • Sounds more like E.L.P, or Triumvirat....But who cares, smoke a bong and enjoy the ride....

  • Starcastle is a near clone of Yes. The vocal and keyboards. I knew it the first time I ever listened to them. All music is influenced in this regard to some degree from the Beatles on down. A person could even say the Beatles were influenced by Surf bands. My point, Starcastle committed no crime. They made some enjovable music. I always liked Lady of the Lake. Those who do not like Siarcastle can just forget they ever existed. That would be easy to do at this late date.

  • they sound nothing like yes you people must be deaf gary starters playing compared to chris squir their isnt any the man was a master at his craft

  • @crs2221993s dude, chris squire is one of the top 10 bassists ever....no one ever heard of this goon, gary starters, you have a hard-on for! capiche? wth is the matter with you ppl? You think you're special cause you have your own little niche of toolshorts that love some charlatan band that never made it? Theres a reason they didnt make it big...its called composition! These tunes suck !

  • @leonakita you suck dumb fuck but then again my dad does have one of gary`s basses in the bedroom with the case to fuckin prove it. also wears your covers gary had more talent in one finger then you do

  • @crs2221993s wtf cares...composition!...sho

  • @crs2221993s wtf cares! show me composition! Good musical composition!...this is just horrid ! These fuckers can't write a song if their lives depended on it... theres more to being a complete artist than mastery of the instrument...these fucks failed miserably at song writing!..capiche?..get over it !

  • Saw these guys in the 70's. The freakin ROCK!

  • THESE ARE THE WORST 'YES' IMITATORS I EVER HEARD!... the songs blow!

  • @leonakita was considering leaving a considerate or even an intelligent response but saw your other comments and just won't do it. Enjoy other music, please. Perhaps a "Yes" tribute band

  • @scottishjones i just don't understand how you can say this isnt blatant YES /ELP charlatans?...explain that to me..please!...when groups like the aforementioned make their mark and bums try to capitalize on their success, its just a disgrace...I assure you, i know music...and this sounds like inferior YES/ELP combo imitators....its almost like they said "lets take both their sound styles, intermix them, and then playback with some piss poor music composition and call it our own" Sad, very sad.

  • @leonakita As stated- I'll address your questions from a close range perspective - U of IL - 1974 - 77, a dozen or so live shows, mutual friends just hangin' at rehearsals and listening to this album many times. Sought after band for their Beatles/Beach Boys/Stones cover sets at ChancesR. No YES yet, but A+ Beatles/Beach /Stones ON PURPOSE. The cover sets were legendary and kept the chicks mmm. Then came their originals set with the electronic keyboard sound. A tasty transition ...

  • @leonakita It's really not necessary to be hostile. Music should be enjoyable. Starcastle did not make it even close to the upper echelons like other bands, but that's not the point. This music just happened to come along at a time and place that appeals to many listeners. The songs on this album are honest original works in spite of the similarities to YES, etc. No need to argue...you don't have to agree. Please enjoy music that you like and try to be less rude to others. That's all.

  • @scottishjones fair enough

  • Lol. I watched this vid and forgot about my food. Now it's cold.

Proof that music can often be a single focus.

  • @MysteryClown000 I love this comment. Many a time I have found myself eating congealed food because of a great song found and heard.

    Tom in Utica

  • K-SHE classic

  • StarCastle sounded like STARCASTLE....

  • MASTERPIECE du Néo Prog

  • I knew Terry L. from being a roadie in R.E.O. speedwagon gigs. One day I ran into him and asked him why he had left R.E.O.,he told he had a new band called Starcastle! That was in 1970! It took them a long time but they ended up making several great records. Prog rules!!

  • Killer stuff.Too bad so few American bands took the prog road in the 70's and yes they do sound like Yes alot so dont deny it.They where still great.

  • @Big77Jim AMEN ! Theres alot worse you could sound like! I just want these tools to admit it, and I agree, far too few American prog groups. Perhaps because it requires real talent and dedication. Look how many punk bands America spawned... not to mention the current pluthera of shitty hip hop/rap acts. why?....because it requires little or no real talent.

  • Loved this back in the day - still sounds great - I did seek it out after all! :)

  • LPs one and two from these guys -great classic rock , so what if they were inspired by Yes, a good band to be inspired by

  • I went to the WNAP Raft Race in Indianapolis the year Starcastle appeared there. I remember my cousin and I talking to some random guy who was already fucked up at 9 in the morning, and he gravely said to us "Lady Of The Lake is a bad-ass motherfucker of a song, for sure". Still makes me laugh, but Starcastle put on a great show that day :P

  • I saw them as a warm up band for Johnny and Edger Winter and it was a great concert

  • I got to hang out with them when they opened for Boston in Spartanburg SC in the late 70s. Went to the concert to see them, not Boston. Great stuff... I haven't heard this in many years.

  • I saw them in San Antone in the 80s with blackfoot and gary wright. Starcastle kicked ass...for real...long live kmac and kiss of san antonio radio..

  • One of my all time favorite albums!!!!

  • Does this have anything to do with the Lady of the Lake in the Arthurian Legend?

  • ok.....can some one please give me the lyrics?

  • Morning velvet crystal Broken reds with scarlet Hand me down of sundry seas Melting golden flesh Is cracked and spilled in gardens Circles grown on me Fly me on Fly me on The hour will be Fly me on Fly me on The hour will be Window morning I see Wonder come to me You will turn it Nothing is the key Window morning I see Wonder come to me You will turn it Nothing is the key She's the Lady of the Lake Wrapped in the sun With the summer in her hands Owing no one
  • In the flashing of her eyes Life is begun Da Da Window morning I see Wonder come to me You will turn it Nothing is the key Window morning I see Wonder come to me You will turn it Nothing is the key She's the Lady of the Lake Wrapped in the sun From her features and her flame Flow into one In the burning of her breath Time is undone Morning velvet crystal Broken reds with scarlet Hand me down of sundry seas Melting golden flesh Is cracked and spilled in gardens
  • Circles grown on me Fly me on Fly me on The hour will be Fly me on Fly me on The hour will be Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da
  • I saw Starcastle at Central Park when this album came out and they played it in it's entirety. this was a great band live. They never got the popularity they deserved.

  • Similar to YES but much better. I think these guys could do better music. Its good of you guys to put them on You Tube. great sound.

  • from 4:16 to 4:40...a direct lift from keith emerson and the nice.....

  • i remember these guys from back in the day. I kept listening close to the bass player who I think is awesome and incredible harmonies....stiill. ty starcastle!!!!

  • Leon. These guys are extremely talented. Extremely talented musicians are relegated to obscurity all too often. Then you have those who are famous and have no talent at all. What a world.

  • MASTERPIECE !

  • WTF.. THIS IS 'YES'!

  • @leonakita NO, Yes Was this!

  • @Melambdalguq I actually dislike Yes and Im pretty into Starcastle

  • @Melambdalguq Never ONCE did I listen to Lady of the Lake thinking that "OH BOY, IT SOUNDS LIKE YES! HOORAY!!!!' Starcastle's Lady of the Lake stands ON IT"S OWN!!! To always be reminded that you "sound like" another band is NOT a crown, and you would not like to wear that either. I can't name another major band on youtube where it looks like most of the comments are "they sound like so and so" and "sounds like a combo of so and so and so and so"....that is ridiculous, asnine, and repugnant.

  • my first concert rush starcastle and max webster in south bend indiana. had to be about 1975. i was 15 man what a show.

  • Yes!

    Oh, hang on...

  • Loved them then, (1976) love them now. Man of my friends did not like them. One comes to mind, Greg Hunt. A real fake guy, (to this day). He would go for r&b...."cultured music"...so he could get the ladies. A real poser....originality to him, was a fresh pair of underwear....but I digress. Long live Starcastle and Gary's memory!!

  • very nice ...have been a fan since the 80s

  • A lot of people say this band is similar to Yes like it's a bad thing.

  • @ProcolHarum1967 I agree...wtf is wrong with saying they sound like a hybrid YES+ELP?... I can think of no greater compliment to a prog band.

  • Loved this song when I first heard it in 1976, and I still love it 35 years later!

It's an upbeat, strongly melodic song with Yes - like harmonies and echoes of ELP that make it a very special song!

  • To me,"Lady of the Lake" is, and will remain, their masterpiece. I remember listening to the Starcastle LP on the stereo in my room and feeling absolutely transported to another galaxy--and I wasn't even on anything! God bless you always, guys You too,Gary The music has outlasted the naysayers and the short-sighted money men who never supported it well enough back in the day and is now available to all who will listen. With love and appreciation,Ron Labieniec

  • Hibrid between Yes & ELP

  • @Delivered0ne

The translation of robots matters little we have the music. Definitively !

Since France I you wish of maid musical listening in progressive rock.

  • In case this video gets blitzed by the bastages at sony, try doing as the following link shows in order to bring it back, but you have to add back the beginning of the URL - It's the same as this one and all u-tube videos.

...AND PLEASE UPLOAD THE REST OF THIS 1ST STARCASTLE ALBUM!!!

    watch?v=F100XgLtmc0&feature=related

  • JeeeeZZEEE quit comparing Starcastle to other bands already!!!! Just because they sing falsetto and have fancy progressive instrumentation. The "mainstream" progressive bands were OVERPLAYED ON THE RADIO both then and now. Only the real cool people listened to STARCASTLE ....

  • @JEDIALADDIN you sound like a hipster

  • @JEDIALADDIN you're a phucking idiot.. u think because u listened to some obscure band they r in some way better than YES?...sorry..this is sorry assed imitation of YES & ELP at best...so you and your 'really cool people' can kindly blow it out your phucking ass you narcistic pretentious little snots!

  • @leonakita Funny how you can always tell the DRUNKEN DRUGGED OUT FOOLS on youtube by language like yours. Don't ever insult Starcastle by claiming to be a fan. YOUR style fan is not needed now or then. THERE YOU GO AGAIN comparing Starcastle to other bands. What a total fool. You will live all your life like that....shame

  • @JEDIALADDIN ...if you can't take the heat..get out of the kitchen!... your ostentacious comments warranted that rebutal... oh and btw... i'm far from a 'DRUNKEN DRUGGED OUT FOOL' and thats totally pot calling the kettle black!

  • @leonakita Thanks for not being so childish as to compare Starcastle to other bands! The REASON you people feel Starcastle "sounds like" other bands is because you drink too much ( or think this music is best listened to on drugs ) If you would simply sober up like adults for a couple of years and get all that JUNK out of your systems, you would realize, for example, the Starcastle vocals on this songs sounds NOTHING like another popular band mentioned here OVER AND OVER. You can hear each

  • @leonakita you can hear each voice in the mix on this quality track here on youtube. THEY ARE DIFFERENT INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE than the commonly referred to other band and sound nothing like them. They are simply singing falsetto. Starcastle's techniques on their instruments are their own and individual. Ask Starcastle members, if you can see them sometime, "Hey, did you guys wake up one day and say LET'S MAKE AN ALBUM AND TRY TO COPY AND SOUND LIKE SUCH AND SUCH???" No, that is a waste of talent.

  • @JEDIALADDIN this is B.S... I can hear each diff voice in a YES song..its not just Jon Anderson. blah blah, yadda, yadda....at the end of the day this is nothing but pseudo YES/ELP imitators that lack the creativity and songwritting ability of the aformentioned greats... your inability to accept that is your prob not mine.... ..which band made it big, which didnt?...theres a reason for thats...its talent!.....so just be happy when someone says they sound like YES/ELP hybrid.. its a compliment

  • @leonakita Pound sand

  • @john083055 me thinks you are toolshort muwahahaha

  • @leonakita

Did you not mature in your parents basement? Starcastle are a more "melodic" group than Yes. They do have similarities in sound. And countless bands sound like the Beatles. Starcastle with its "Reel to Real" album release went for a more "pop" sound. As with Yes when they released "Owner of a lonely heart", Yes was considered a "sellout".

As a bassist, I can immediately hear the difference between Squire and Strater. You need to learn some manners when disagreeing with people.

  • @jammie4u @jammie4u lol, more melodic...you mean, less interesting/creative!.. No one, but no one, can listen to these boring long wandering instrumentals w/o coming to the conclusion that these are just wannabes that said 'LET'S BE A BAND THATS A HYBRID OF ELP/YES AND CASH IN ON THEIR SUCCESS!' If you can't see that, then you're in denial and need to see a shrink ! Capiche?

  • @leonakita

    Put....the ...bottle....down.

  • @jammie4u Put the crackpipe down, goon !

  • @JEDIALADDIN I agree but have to add that I always thought this was their answer to YES's 'Close to the Edge', especially since it goes through several timing changes and has that mellow part, paraphrasing YES' almost 'in-cave' bit.

No doubt YES was a major inspiration for Starcastle, but Starcastle has their own sound in their own right, and IF mimicking YES was their intention, no one else did near as good a job

Their 1st 3 albums will forever be in my 'Most-Listened-To' file of '70s tunes

  • @JEDIALADDIN AHAHAH @ 'the cool ppl'... try the ppl unable to recognize poor composition.

  • Had this album and even saw them live way back when - but all these years later sounds very amateurish. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but better to be a lousy original band that the best "fan band." Hear Yes and ELP influences throughout.

  • No true '70s Prog-Rock fan can help but love the 1st 3 albums by StarCastle. Maybe reminiscent of some of the early YES music but deserving of their own place in music history as they are in their own way unique, & occupy my CD player more often than does any of my considerably large and well-enjoyed YES collection.

For me it's a non-issue. They are both loved, both great, though somewhat similar, each deserving of respect in their own right.

StarCastle captures space while YES captures time

  • You should check out 'Star Fleet Project'!! Brian May and Eddie Van Halen album!!

  • You should check out 'Star Fleet Project'!!

  • Man, this reminds me the first Yes album!

  • 1975 Detroit, Ford Music Auditorium, great show. $6 tickets. Singer wore knee high fur boots.

  • We saw them in Ocean City Md in the 70's..This song brings me back.

  • Love this song, love this band....Terry, Matt, Gary (RIP)....Champaign/Urbana at it's finest!

  • Fantastic.

  • I always liked this song inspired me to do a painting with the same title....so Yes like...Yeah!

  • Champaign Illinois has had some great bands.

  • Very strong elements of The Ritual from Tales in this song.

  • It's like if the best Yes tribute band in the world was given a record contract to play original music.

And the last 10 seconds are a total rip-off of the "Da da da" bit from "Siberian Khatru".

  • @Mikemaniax Exellent analogy

  • Reminds me of Red Barchetta at the beginning. My dad is to listeng to this quite a lot.

  • I love to hear this song all of the time. When I am on long drives or just relaxing this song is my "good vibe" song.

  • proto powermetal

  • Our laugh at Blackburn College was whether Starcastle was an imitation of YES or vice versa - same with Triumvirat and ELP. No matter - They all complemented each other and makes for fabulous listening pleasure. Cannot even listen to the so called music of today... Are there any good guitar driven rock bands out there now?

  • my dad has been a huge YES fan since the time he was a young teen. naturally he found out about these guys and got this album. he and i collect YES albums but we still love throwing this on the record player

  • these guys were something...i really thought it was yes the 1st time i heard them...sadly they went nowhere...ppl were too busy listening to kiss, aerosmith, led zeppelin and well yes at the time. 4.25 sounds like E.L.P...unique band indeed. the 70s were such an amazing time for music :)

  • this one of two of my favorites off this album, Starcastle reminds me of Rush & Camel

  • i had this "album" in high school..i bought it because i thought the cover was cool..:)

  • @mirandazar I just recently bought it on vinyl for the exact reason...and to my surprise its now one of my fav 70's prog records.

  • A most excellent song and definitely a most excellent band. I used to see them at a bar at the University of Illinois back in the day. I think the bar was 'Chances R'. They used to have $2 night, you walk in pay get a mug that you could keep getting filled all night and listen to Starcastle!

  • @insane4usd

wow, i was there probably many of the same nights as you......early 70's

remember taking a cab to chances r for this band, head east and a cpl other nameless bands I cannot recall. also remember a band called slink rand that played at the red lion.

  • @zakmandeau the other bands must have been pavlov's dog, mama's pride, jake's leg... seen mostly at pops, the spectrum and the attic, and also kie,l opening for national acts. great times seeing bands back then for $6.50

  • How can that be so great, and people don't give damn attention?

Maybe it's even better than YES!

  • Glad to see all you remember this song. The Steve Howe and John Anderson similarities ARE amazing. Does anyone know if any of these band members went on to other projects.

  • @tecubdog terry luttrell was one of the first vocalists in r.e.o speedwagon

  • Muy Bieeeeen!

  • Saw starcastle at the WNAP raft race in Broad Ripple Park Back in the 70's

  • I love Starcastle!!!!

  • The first time I heard this band I though: YES, even guitar at 2:08 has the same Steve Howe sound, the voice quite similar to Anderson´s.

  • played my high school in76 they rocked!

  • Check Facebook 4 StarCastle pics or log on 2 my FB pg - Deborah Becker & mention the band. I will "friend" U so U can go thru the STARCASTLE PICS I have up. hope the pics bring back smiles & memories 2 their fans. I should hav a tribute up on UTUBE by the end of this month 4 Gary Strater & the band. My CLIMAX BLUES BAND utube is new but has gotten som attention. CLIMAX bass player Derek Holt remembers warmly their shows with STARCASTLE. Those were the days 4 terrific music!!

  • @alot2me Which Deborah Becker? There are like, three of them!

  • WOW!! amazing group, It sounds like YES and a little part like Tarkus-ELP

    Great job pal!!!.

  • my first concert was rush, starcastle and max webster! wow! i was 15 i think! around 1975 or 76?

  • saw them lincoln ne 1776?

  • 1976- i SAW STARCASTLE WITH BOSTON

IWAS PRETTY DRUCNK, AND THOUGHT STARCASTLE WAS YES!!!!

  • My very first concert---Starcastle and Kansas.

  • from Bali: kembaran nya YES.... atau sebaliknya ???? pokoknya ueeeenaaak tuning

  • Thanks for posting this. I have had "Citadel" since the 70's but never had the opportunity to hear the bands earlier works.

    Cheers! :0)

  • Well do I remember hearing this tune the first time living in Miami, Fl. Heard it on an old album side adult contemperary radio station "SHE-QUAD 103" or WSHE. Miss those old radio stations. Miss the heck outta Starcastle and lazy summers as a teen. Thanks for posting this. Memories still leave a tear or two! Good ones, though.

  • @missdebbielee WSHE is long gone, used to love that station

  • STARCASTLE -VH-1 documentary should be in the works as every time I mention this band in a sentence eyes glass over filled with memories of "back in the day". YES INFLUENCED?W ell why not!! How about looking at QUEEN for comparisons. I remember Gary singing to Bohemian Rhapsody one night after a show...Nothing wrong with a bit of well placed influence! Love, Saintluna

  • @alot2me I agree with you. Just think of all the groups RUSH influenced ! Starcastle

is a very good band. I love the moog, guitar playful banter. This is when Music was at it's best !

  • This song is hawt <.< First time hearing this band

  • Sure in the hell better than REO.

  • Skipped high school a couple days to see these guys play a lunchtime gig at a local college ca. 75-76. Crazy good music for any time.

  • Great album an old friend of mine picked out of crazy, unloved music bin somewhere - just because the album art was groovy - alittle like Yes -and we listened to this music with ELP and Yes and a few others, but this was our tripping May-Day happy tunes!
