It's actually not hard to teach a dog to do this.
After teaching the dog to do this with several basics, what would be interesting would be to write more than one word on the sheet, experiment with new words, and misspell words to see what level of discernment dogs have.

People learn that letters make sounds and when you put each individual sound together, it makes a word. They learn that words have meaning and when you put several words together, you make sentences, which also have meaning. The only thing that the dog is doing is rote memorization. It’s like that stupid “Your Baby Can Read” crap. Baby’s cannot read. Neither can dogs.
This is cool, but once again, dogs can't read, but they do pick up any and all signals, like subtle body and mouth movements.
You have a PERCEPTIVE dog, not a dog that can read.
