If the board gets sticky you can clean it up with naphta. It'll get very dry so you should apply some linseed oil over the board for a bunch of minutes and then remove the oil

The file is called "Fret End Dressing File" and runs about $12. I think it was 1500 wet/dry, but I probably could have used something a bit coarser.

I've notice that EVERY Gibson guitar iv'e played in the last 6 months or so it has had VERY sharp fret edges. one particular SG actually cut my finger open.

Well then, get thee a file and do what I did!

I've now taken to keeping my electrics in a case with humidifier in it as I do with my acoustics. It helps the fingerboard stay nice and hydrated.

When you remove the tape, is there any certain way you have to remove it so it doesn't pull the finish off with it?

No, painters tape is very forgiving. No problem with the finish coming whatsoever.
