I wish Franchi would use the external looks and modernize and simplify the interior and working mechanisms and re-produce this beast of a shotgun. It's really a shame, the best looking shotgun in my most humble opinion.
I always wanted a SPAS 12, but the liberal morons in the U.S. got it banned before I could get one. But some U.S. gun manufacturer could make them under a different name or make one with a slightly different design, but keep the dual function. I just like the idea of a dual function shotgun.
@andros800 You said it dude. I wasn't aware that it was so complicated. I can't imagine long term use and problems that may come from breakage of all the little parts. No wonder it's so heavy, they tried to make the swiss army gun. Got more buttons and latches than my keyboard.
Wow I was just shown one of these today a a pawn shop that was about to be for sell. They didn't know what they had and I didn't know much more about it. After reading comments for $800 I think I'm goin back tomorrow.
The button cannot be removed while retaining regular function. It functions as a bolt release as well.
One could possibly cut away some of the shell carrier, but I don't know how that would affect reliability. I would just suggest buying a modern shotgun if you have the need to reload quickly while staying on target.
Owned one for years until they got banned in canada and i sold it about a mth before the ban(should have kept it)Didn't find anything complicated with it.Easy to use when you know your weapon.Fast shooting,i personally could load it as quickly as any shotgun i have owed.Though as nails, could drag it in the mud while hunting and it would keep on shooting.Could cycle any ammo true it,if it jammed or didnt cycle on a cheap ammo, just pump it and the round would go true.Best shotgun i ever owned!!!
It actually seems like a very tame and ineffective gun. Banning it by name is meaningless-- the gun proves itself bad for robbing liqueur stores and drive-by shootings. You were having problems with it just trying to demonstrate it's functions.
@Bernieo153 It was usually overlooked for more effective designs. When compared to most combat shotguns it weighs much more (its nearly 10 pounds), it was known for being a bit fragile, and the semi auto mode only cycled well with high powered shells with low powered shells it had a tendency to not extract completely..
Where do you buy one of these? I can't seem to find any,and i want one with the folding stock. I have all my liscences (including restricted firearms liscence) so i should be legal to buy this, but like i said, cant find one...
and i like the stock stock better not that heavy metal one they made to make them look "cool" putting on a factory one intended for it almost drops 2 pound but they are hard to find hehe
way does everyone call it a combat shotgun it's intention of being made was for sporting hence the name SPAS12= Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun gauge 12

Complicated to use at first but once you're well familiar with it, you're good. It makes no sense that it's banned because it's still just a shotgun. If I had one, I'd keep it in auto mode and use the pump only to scare off someone trying to break in my castle. Also, i'll modify the folding stock by adding a shell holder and a vertical grip to the forend. I wish I can get one.
@Senorize Well for one why not have a pump and semi in one i dont know to many people that would complain about that and another reason the sound of a pump action in the middle of the night to a would be intruder is prob pretty intimidating
nice review of this shotgun, i was actually thinking about looking into getting one of these strictly for sporting purpose but after seeing your video it's just basically a complicated shotgun and heavy shotgun, i think i'll stick to mossbergs lol
@johnnye222 They aren't as bad as it looked in the vid if you take out a couple times. they are alot of fun. the option of shooting low power bird shot is nice and slugs are very soft recoil in semi-auto mode. I suggest scooping one up if you got the coin. only so meny out there. and they are way over priced on gunbroker you can find them alot cheaper if you look around.
if they only would have known what creation saiga would whip up with a (AK-47) style shotgun from Russia......may god help our politically correct American society...on restrictions of these weapons of war....(^_^)
While the looks of the SPAS 12 are undeniably "so ugly it's gorgeous" the gun itself is rather uncomfortable to shoot I got rid of mine a few years back out of sheer frustration , and decided to pick up SAIGA 12 by Izmash , I haven't looked back since.

@KingCommando32 Yeah I can see your point but at the time I had no more room in the gun safe and I needed a good combat shotgun so I kinda "traded up" I do admit missing the SPAS-12 for the sheer looks value alone.
If I had it to do again I wouldn't have sold it but I am very happy with my IZ-109 Saiga 12.

@YamahaMonster660 Yo, you can still get one. there for sale all the time. they were banned from IMPORT. If there in this country still, you can buy them. pretty easy to find on Gunbroker or gunsamerica.
it's too bad that this is not in production anymore this is the most iconic shotgun of all time!, no other shotgun has been featured as much in movies, tv shows, comics and videogames, they should start producing it again only because it's so iconic!
It would fall flat on its face against modern combat shotguns such as the Benelli M4, leaving it in collector/mall ninja territory. And those markets could not bear a new production SPAS 12 at all.
The SPAS had its day back in the early 80's, and there are still plenty in circulation if you want one.
@Gnuzzk they should also start makin it again because of its power its accurate spread patten an awesome range and the fact that more than half of the worlds spec ops and counter terriost units still use it a lot
@WELSHSHOTGUNNER85 yes i heard it's still a favorite among special ops because of it's reliability, they should take the exact same design and improve it, someone should persuade Franchi to start making it again
@Gnuzzk yes that kick ass the spas12 with the same looks made out of more stronger and lighter metals and made simpler to use if franchi did that the spas12 would become the god of all shotties
The SPAS 12 is already about as light as it can get. The weight comes from the pump-to-semi mechanism and the heat shield, which could not be lightened much.
It's a dead design. No one will ever revive it for practical purposes.
Also, I don't know of a single serious military or paramilitary organization that uses these anymore. No one used/liked them much when they were in production, either. It's not a favorite of anyone but Hollywood.
@joguwa86 well maybe if franchi started making it again they could allow the spas to take better shells and maybe improve the folding stock if i remeber correctley doesnt the folding stock feels really uncoftable but the main thing they should do if they started remaking it is to make much simpler to use that would help alot
i would never use this shotgun ,i dont know who will ,it too complicated ,if u want a semi get a beneli if u want a pump get a ( remington,mossberg,winchester)....
oh ok but do they have one identical to the spas-12 but is just pump-action? I still find it wierd that there are so many review and videos of ppl shooting the spas-12 when they dont make these gun anymore.
I just have to say great review man and you even answered my question if there Is a pump-action only spas-12 shotgun. Is the sas-12 shotgun easy to get or hard to get in america?
No offense to you or you're shotgun, but it seems like an overhiped piece of crap. I can see how a large magazine wuold be nice, but you can get an extended mag on mossbergs and remmingtons to make them just as good, and you dont have that loading button to fiddle with. I can respect that the features were to make the gun safer, but most things that try to make guns safer either make them more dangerous, or to overcomplicated and heavy to be used effectivley as a weapon or sport implement
I hae no doubt you know how to use a SPAS, but if you compare a spas to a mossberg 590, or a remmington 1100, it IS overcomplicated for a shotgun. by the way what is the capacity?
I think you can hold it down, but if you have to press it every time, thats ridiculous. Also, loading it in a normal shotgun fashion would be very difficult. If one had is loading shells, and one hand is pushing a button, holding the gun up would be very hard. I guess it makes more sense to flip upside down =/
Thanks for the video man! It looks really cool and has good ideas (i.e. pump and semi-auto, folding stock) but it seems to be too hard to use. I never knew it was so complicated. Mossberg 500 - the way to go!
i never liked the franchi models........most of them tended to jam a lot even with proper care and handling......i never liked the s12 and now i have plenty of reasons to do so..........remington 870 is the king of pumps....mossberg and winchester follow.....
I agree, I think there is a reason they aren't made any more. It's design as a combat shotgun is obsolete with the evolution of shotgun tactics. However, as far as reliability goes, I've been having good luck with mine.
Finally, it's nice to get a decent review and overview of a real Franchi SPAS-12. In my opinion, this weapon is really overrated. It's not very practical, and the controls are complex. As you pointed out, it's popularity is a result of its cosmetic appeal, simple as that. Although it was a really innovative design, it's not the best combat shotgun like it's made out to be. Great video, I learned quite a bit.
what's wrong with the Spas-12 i love this gun, i use it in any game i play that has it

@WELSHSHOTGUNNER85
Speaking from personal experience with the actual firearm:
-Shot pattern with average shotgun shells is nothing special.
-As a shotgun range is irrelevant. It's a sub 50 yard weapon, maybe 100 yards with slugs.
-It only takes 2 3/4 shells, making it theoretically less powerful than other common designs.

No The I Assume You Are Asking About Just Pump action Because Of MW2 Well They Don't Make Pump Only One IDK Why Infinity Ward Made It Pump Action

Ok thanxs for the information.

The pump-only variant is called the SAS 12. It doesn't resemble a SPAS 12 very closely.

I just have to say great review man and you even answered my question if there Is a pump-action only spas-12 shotgun. Is the sas-12 shotgun easy to get or hard to get in america?
cvjason93 2 years ago
The SAS-12 is quite rare, and I have only seen 4 for sale in an entire year of looking, and never in the price range I wanted. But it is available.

No offense to you or you're shotgun, but it seems like an overhiped piece of crap. I can see how a large magazine wuold be nice, but you can get an extended mag on mossbergs and remmingtons to make them just as good, and you dont have that loading button to fiddle with. I can respect that the features were to make the gun safer, but most things that try to make guns safer either make them more dangerous, or to overcomplicated and heavy to be used effectivley as a weapon or sport implement

dude the shotguns noy complicated if you no how to use it im 12 and i no how 2 use it cuz my dad has one and he showed me
andrewtylerrx 2 years ago
I hae no doubt you know how to use a SPAS, but if you compare a spas to a mossberg 590, or a remmington 1100, it IS overcomplicated for a shotgun. by the way what is the capacity?
StevenPunisher1976 2 years ago
it holds 9 shells 8 in the tube and 1 in the chamber
andrewtylerrx 2 years ago
that is called 8+1

I think you can hold it down, but if you have to press it every time, thats ridiculous. Also, loading it in a normal shotgun fashion would be very difficult. If one had is loading shells, and one hand is pushing a button, holding the gun up would be very hard. I guess it makes more sense to flip upside down =/

How would i go about getting one? You know, for the ol 'gun rack.
Are they still banned?
24HrPartyBoy 2 years ago
Banned from import, legal to own.
I would just hit up Gunbroker. One like this runs about $1100.
joguwa86 2 years ago
why are they banned in so mmany places its just a badass shotgun
andrewtylerrx 2 years ago
Because they made it a military grade weapon

Thanks for this video. I always wondered how this shotgun worked until now. Thanks a lot.

Still, the go-to gun is an 870...
joguwa86 2 years ago
couldnt agree more m8.....870 all the way :)

Good video.
Never knew it was so complicated to use, I guess in all the films it stars in, it's very misinterpreted.
thanks for this Vid!
