good vid. although I do have to say the samurai didn't really used the katana. It didn't become very important to them until the edo period which is, ironically, the peace time. It is during this time that the samurai had time to devote to swordmanship. During the sengoku jidai almost all samurai used either yumi or yari. Tactically they are superior to katana (reach) and were a lot cheaper. Battlefield samurai did use katana for boarding action or as a sidearm though their main weapon was yumi
I like how there's some Bujinkan guy he's fighting! Doe's he know he's really fighting a Ninja. Ninja wear master of Weapons...and disguise too! Ninja were masters of impersonating Samurai!! You've just been infiltrated buddy!
The other parts are better in my opinion, also I like this one too. But it is clear to see, that much of the samurai training is to much ritualice today. I mean, just shoot that arrow into your enemy, don´t waste your time with zen-meditatic about the transformation fo the bow, the hand, the target, the mind, the soul, the spirit, the balablabla... And the samurai, whcih had really wars in their times before the great peace, they had to shoot and not to meditate about it. Kill and thats it.
I wonder how enduring the edge is against solid armor. Western blades evolved often and a lot in response to the presence or absence of armor and the influx of invading technologies. Would a Katana have more trouble with a fully plate armored knight than a broadsword intended for plate fighting? Both are ridiculously strong blades capable of powerful thrusting, but a broadsword can be half-sworded. I really wonder!
This guy keeps bragging on about special forces when he starts... I'm pretty sure he's just a faggot that's only in for the money... Some day someone will kill this guy if he's not careful
@del885 There are pretty big words that you're small mind can't understand. You should leave History to smart people like me and play with you're toys. LOL
@del885 that was the worst comment ive ever heard, he should be proud that he was with the green berets, one of the worlds most elite groups. it shows how even though his experiences are incredible, he can still be surprised by tactics used so long ago. And just to let you know, any military personel is not paid much for there job, and there is nothing wrong with making a tv show that people can enjoy, even if it is "just for money" or to see and learn 1st hand ecperiences. :)
@airsoftomatic not to mention that he does it because he loves history and warrior cultures, besides even the worst green beret of them all is still a kick-ass profesional soldier
dont forget katana was not a primary weapon on battlefield - saurai would use katana after braking formations and after engaging enemy one on one in melee situations, primary weapons would be used in formations such as long spears short spears maces with chanes, gun powder rifles in later centuries and bows before that. More wealthy samurai would have more weapons more spears more katanas even several daggers for slashing and cuting and stabbing and throwing and in some cases even a bow.
Wooooow!! They did not called Katana "teh bestest swoard evah" and there are no (meanwhile compulsive) fake comparisons between european swords and katAnas with moronic comments how "dull, clumsy, heavy and shitty" european swords were. I must be dreaming...
@Protherium Katana is a light weak sword the only reason stupid people like you believe it is great because you believe the myth and you watch to many Saturday morning cartoon. European Swords are a beast and superior to the Katana. Katana can't even cut a weak armor chainmail.
Ask yourself his question Who build a large empire European swords or the Katana.
It might be true for Katana... Katana emerged in 16-17th century as a civilian weapon, so yeah, it will not have a chance on battlefield, especially against european war blades, cause it was not build for real warfare. That's why Samurai used the so called "Tachi" - a saber-like heavy duty battle sword which remained in use up to 17th century. Most of old japanese swords still survived are actually shortened Tachi. Was Tachi worse than a single handed euroblade? I dont think so.
@Protherium The tachis were actually cavalry swords. Early samurai warriors fought from horseback. Early Japanese swords were direct copies of straight double edged Chinese swords. The tachis were created when warriors started to fight from horseback. The tachis is considered the ancestor of various types of Japanese curved swords. Many old taichis were passed down as heirlooms and many had been shortened to be used as infantry weapon. There are still many unaltered tachis in Japanese museums.
@LoneMyth there were whole bunch of different european swords each build for different purpose and era . as far as i know biggest issue with the katana is the outdated and super expensive method of production , and it is a poor weapon for killing armored opponents . one good thing about katana is its sharpness , you can cut a lib off by flicking the blade.
@LoneMyth Japan has limited souce of iron and high quality iron ore is very limited. Only the best and top quality ones are reserved for making katanas. Japanese metalworkers had developed techniques to turn poor quality iron into reasonably good quality steel. The swords they made had to be strong and flexible enough to avoid breaking during battles. Chainmail armor is designed to deflect sword cuts regardless of European or Japanese swords. Japan has the largest varieties of chainmail armors.
@Lillen121swe That is a fail test. You are comparing to a slashing to a longsword that was never meant to be a slashing weapon. And both swords fail against the steel armor. Just face it European weapons and armor is better. That why the spartan beaten the samurai. :)
@LoneMyth they try stabbing later ;) but I can agree with you when it comes to armor and other weapons, but I think the samurai sword is better when you count all of the ways you can count on! that will say weight, power, slashing, stabbing, length etc etc...
@Protherium i get what ur saying, but thats what modern historians say. I bet if you asked a samurai a real one i dont think they would say that each sword is good for what its meant to do like every gun .45 good for what it is and a .50 cal barretta good for what it is.
@Protherium Well you know, Katana is like a sword designed to cut flesh, European swords can break bones, but in this case Bones can break Kantanas. It's a great sword, but they break pretty easily too.
No they can't. Check out "European sword and Bludgeoning Power" on my channel. They actually are designed to cut, thrust and slice, if struck with force pretty little crushing effect will be achieved.
@RyZombie619 not many people don't like Empire because most people are in Ancient Warfare. People rather play with Rome or Greek instead of early America with old rifle.
@LoneMyth That is true. I've played medieval, rome and napoleon and can safely say that rome is my favourite. I don't really like napoleon because musket warfare is somewhat simplistic when compared to the elaborate manuveurs of pre-gunpowder warfare.
@RyZombie619 they r all pretty good but rome and medievil2 are the best. creative assembly has a bad habit of rushing thier games out however, in an effort to maximize profits. there work suffers as a result, with many glitches, and they usually never bother to put out fixes because there is no profit in it. they also abandon old engines and recreate new ones from the ground up. the latest engine for shogun2 is quite good but they will prolly not use it again, which is stupid in my opinion.

A real test is compare the katana up against Hand-And-Half sword or even Parade Sword.
