I saw them in Mexico city in 1989,we were shocked! the reaction of the people were the same of the patients of this mental institute, thanks for posting this video.
This is great!!! I saw them in Milan (Italy) in 1980 while they were the support band for the Police, a fucked up show where they played only 3 or 4 songs before storming out of the stage submerged by millions of cans of beer and coke ...
I wouldn't take the mental hospital to surface level-t
The guys in this would be the types that avoid the post midnight restrainments without any direction why- because associations on the wrong side of capable often gets the most shocking treatment. SO YOU JUST DON'T ACT
If I was INSIDE, I would be having a secret shower room lights off wank over ivy & I wouldn't want any authority concerned I could kill myself in there - I don't want to be locked up in heavy detention for my own good,.
The Cramps were an American punk rock band, formed in 1976 and active until 2009. The band split after the death of lead singer Lux Interior.[1] Their line-up rotated much over their existence, with the husband and wife duo of Interior and lead guitarist Poison Ivy the only permanent members. Guitarist Bryan Gregory and drummer Pam Ballam completed the first complete lineup in April 1976.
@ginaven1 So saying fuck is worse than insulting a handicapped and/or insane woman? And no thats not me but I make a brief cameo on the air mic at 2:25.
I've always heard stories about this, but never go to see it.This is awesome!! Awesome post! This is like watching 1 flew over the coo coo's nest with the cramps...lol.Awesome post. This was a real nice thing for them to do.
Now why is it that I keep coming back to this video? R'n'R at its maddest and best. Course - none of the patients probably got to see the show - this is just the staff!
The crazy part is there's really a haunted napa insane asylum cuz there's a new one now but the old is still there like peopel tried to shut it down but construction workers got scared off and stuff but if u wana find out u Gota go all the way back at the new one on the road hit liberty high school go to the back go left by the fence follow the road them da little trail and it's der hella creepy
This is brilliant! Why can't more bands do this sort of thing? Maybe they think they're too "cool" - that it's beneath them. Talk about missing the point...
@JoeStunner This was just one of many things the SF punk scene did then, the Mutants were also playing this show. Then there was CRIME playing San Quentin.
Lux really knew how to control a crowd. See how gracefully he deflects the people who want to get in his face here. He isn't intimidated, but he doesn't bully them, either. Very few performers could do something like that. Lux was a master showman.
1968: Cash plays at Folsom. 1978: Cramps play at Napa State. So I guess one key to a iconic gig is to play at a place of confinement in year ending in 8. My heads full of random observation such as this.
легендарный концерт THE CRAMPS в психиатрической клинике Napa State Mental Hospital 13 июня 1978 года. Единственная аудитория концерта пациенты клиники, люди, обращаясь к которым в самом начале концерта вокалист THE CRAMPS Lux Interior говорит: Somebody told me you people are crazy!
It warms my heart to see the interaction between the band and the audience. Lux is never condescending to the patients, he treats them not only with the same decency all people have a right to be treated with, but with a surprising degree of relaxed attitude. But then, I know people who would argue the Cramps themselves should have been in an institute. Long Life to Insanity!
Wow, this was like an early alternative pioneering of music therapy for those suffering from mental health issues. Well done to The Cramps.
More bands/singers should play free shows in psychiatric hospitals. Johnny Cash played in prisons, The Cramps played here in a mental hospital... It cheers people up...
We need more fun concerts like this.... God Bless The Cramps and how brave they were for doing this... Very raw and real, not like the plastic we see now days...

I really think with all of the GREAT Lux-Interior stories that I've heard....
There was probably a sincere motivation The Cramps performing there!!
That they knew that this population is overlooked, as far as performance goes..
And too. that here's a population that may really appreciate the vibes and the sounds that the band cranked out!! :-)
