Adrian's solo was okay, but Bernie, Mel and John did better. But regardless, this is actually a good lineup; very energetic. I wonder what "Slip Of The Tongue" would've been like with Adrian or even Vivian (or John!) on it?
vandenberg can't play one of the greatest solos in history of rock and metal and i think cambell could play it better! john sykes was a great gitarist and better than vandenberg but the video is cool!
I saw this tour in Philly. I thought they both kicked ass. I was more of a Viv fan than Vandy. but liked them both! I was in the 10th row at the Spectrum show. They were amazing! Saw them open for Motley twice b4 they headlined! One of the best concerts ive been too! sadly, i missed the Tongue tour. The snake kick ass!
@Tspsoldierboy / I saw them in Richmond Va nd Viv got held up in customs with passport issues and they had to play the gig without him, just Adrian Vandenberg. I was disappointed to say the least as I was a huge Viv/ Dio fan. Saw them the next night in Roanoke and Viv was there and saw them 3 months later when they started to headline! Amazing! Saw them 3 times in 90 with Vai as well.
vandenbergs style didn't suit whitesnake at all! both him and campbell sound out of tune every now and then, give me sykes anyday. but campbell and vand are two of my fave guitarist, though just not in this band.
I can't believe this Monster band opened for Motley Crue.......I know that the Crue were selling more albums but come on........Look at this line up, musically and technically they destroy the Crue...
OH man this is such a cheesy song. I'm not sure I agree with ALL the stage choreography here but still this would be a killer concert to have gone to. It looks like Vandenberg is playing his Peavey. I would kill for one of those, or for any of the signature guitars of the 80s guitar hero characters.
I just have to say something to all the guys who do not like some parts or any of these solos, Whitesnake was opening for the Crue on this tour and did not have much time for anything. I have never seen an opening act do a guitar solo before or since. And trying to compare almost any guitarist to Vai is pretty stupid! Take this for what it is. I just wish Adrian could still play. I was 18 when I saw this tour and it is still the first opener to kick the headliners ass i have seen.
I love Vandenberg, but this solo really sucks. Just a bunch of scales and triplets up and down, no melody or phrasing at all. Syke's solo is a masterpiece on the other hand.
@demrayhalen I don´t think so... Plant and Rodgers have never had that vocal power, range and period, and the comparison with Stevie is out of place. Greetings.
Lovely intro. Very instinctive and natural guitar playing. Does Vandenberg's wild vibrato really make him better than Campbell, no I love the contrast. I think Campbell is paying more attention to the subtle harmonics in the feedback for instance. Two different players!
Coverdale's voice sounds very 'thick' from some heavy touring, kinda like it!
If anyone here knows the story behind how David Coverdale voice totally changed between the time he was the singer for Deep Purple in the mid 70's to when he joined Whitesnake, then please share it with me.
from a chic...the blonde is Adrian Vandenberg...Vivian Campbell has the dark red hair....the bass player is the incredible Mr. Rudy Sarzo...Adrian walked up to me in I sat on the 10 or better center and saw these guys at least 4 times and there is NOTHING like a WHITESNAKE concert where the entire band is a hired gun and the very best at what they do.
I saw this tour at Irvine Meadows in CA, and I've never seen a band with that much gear..I counted 16 Marshall cabs marked A. Vandenberg, 16 marked V. Campbell and 12 bass cabs marked Sarzo before they set up...awesome.
Vandenberg asolutely dominated Campbell on this tour. He playing was spot on. Then came his injured wrists. I have a Whitesnake bootleg of this tour and Vandenberg owned Campbell on the disk. But he never played on Slip of the Tomgue, which he composed all songs for.
Excellent, thank you! I have this show on tape (audio), and had no idea it was filmed. David Civilised was on-form on that tour. Campbell and Vandenberg was a good combination. (Can't believe some people want to bring Big Hair back, though...)
Vivian bloody rocks!! as well as Vandenberg.. Never seen this before. Would have been great to keep Sykes on board though. A great time for rock/metal. Since I got older I really appriciate the old classic Snake albums though with Moody/Marston..thanks for posting this.
man, that intro & Adje's solo were just too hot! i'm a huge Vandenberg fan & a Sykes & Vai fan as well. they all bring unique elements to the Snake. thank God for guitar!!!! lol
I don't see how anyone can sound bad on one of those Kramer Knightswan model guitars that Vivian is playing. I use to own two and the both were just superb instruments. Vivian is more of a 'riffmeister" and Adrian is the guitarist who plays melodic shapes well.
Saw this tour....Adrian just blew Viv off the stage. Saw them few years later with Steve Vai as well. Adrian held his own with Steve....not many guitarist can make that claim.
Totally agreed. Seen every show since '87. Really liked Vivian but he was overshadowed by Vandenberg. And then AV held up fine chops-wise with Vai, even looked better by comparison because Vai's style was just so ill-fit for this band. How insane would Slip of the Tongue have been with a Sykes-Vandenberg playing and songwriting combo - are you listening, DC?!?!
@Reg197844, have you seen the late 90's stuff where Steve Farris was the other guitarist?, Adrian must've really lost it by then cause Farris hands him his ass in every bit of footage
Slash wouldn't play it better... he's a great player but his style is completely different... different skills. Vandenberg is much closer to Sykes, than Slash... but the truth remains, that no guitar magician can imitate another... and Vandenberg wasn't trying it, he did the song in his style and it's still great... But yes, Sykes's solo is breathtaking.
ok I know adrian played some licks.. but man o man.. i dont remember the solo for this song sounding like that or close.. did he just make his own solo up? sheesh should have let vivian play it..
Campbell and Vandenburg sound like they're competing to see who can sound the most like Gary Moore during the intro. And, of course, Sarzo and Aldridge, jumping at the chance to follow-up yet another rhythm section's studio work by playing it live. Didn't suck, but would have rather seen what Dunbar, Sykes and Murray could have done with these tunes live.
I think that was a great solo by Adrian. No one will ever match Sykes' solo, but it was tasteful and fit the song. Vai's solo on the 89-90 tour was great as well...just different interpretations. Too bad Coverdale has never released a live album from this tour. This was the band that hooked me to rock!
